I absolutely love the commentary between the crew on the bridge of the Enterprise D during the battle. Especially Picards speech and the defiant last stand of Picard trying desperately for last volley with the phasers. Rikers cockiness at the start is great as well.

Ablative armour would likely have been in development at this time in the prime time line. No reason to think they would not have fast tracked its development in the war against Klingons time line.

Didn't Ablative Armor came from examining the remains of Brog hull technology, at least that was I thought from headcanon but it could be something else.

@@raw6668 Ablative armor isn't exactly a new concept, looking through the blueprints of 20th century spacecraft would have given them the idea. The Borg where more likely the reason they remembered it, the standard idea of "more power to the shield system" doesn't help much against a threat that outsmarts the shield. But in the prime timeline they never suffered significant losses due to battle damage, no reason to make the hull more complex. A few cases where a reinforced hull would have kept the ship in action and they'd learn the lesson.

raw666 - According to a statement on the Memory Alpha page on ablative armour. The Star Trek TNG Technical Manual states ablative armour was standard on the Galaxy-class.

The Enterprise-D had very little maneuvering options available to it, having to keep the Klingons off of one specific target. That, coupled with the Klingons' own maneuvers, would make it much more difficult to bring all the weapons to bear on one or two ships while the rest went after the Enterprise-C. In a straight-up fight with nobody to protect, the D would crush them one by one. Even an undamaged C could probably crush one of them without any trouble.

I don't know mate, in the episode they clearly prefer not to fight 3 K'Vorts at the same time. It appears to me like they could maybe take out 2 of them before being seriously crippled themselves. Even if they could somehow destroy all three, it would probably end up in a mutually assured destruction.

it seemed more like there just wasn't any real need to fight the Klingons on their terms, except to protect the C. Tactics would dictate for Picard to get the nearest backup regardless.

Love this. I absolutely love videos done in this style, i don't know why, but when battle breakdowns are done with them 2d graphics, something about it just makes it much nicer of a video to watch. It makes me feel like the creator puts even more care in than previously. Of course, I already know you put your full into all of your videos Lore, but something about breakdowns done in this style is just so much, it speaks volumes about the level of commitment (Lord knows I could never made these fancy graphics lol, trust me, I've tried.) If I wasn't a poor scrub I'd donate to your patreon and see about more Galactica content because there just isn't enough about it these days. Keep up the amazing work Lore, you sir, are amazing. And I don't know how I used to enjoy youtube before your videos.

I thought Ablative Armor was developed from examing debris from the destroyed Borg Cube in orbit of Earth. It could be in this AU, they made the Galaxy Class with a thicker armor like we see in Akira since it was meant to be a warship. Though it brings up a question I cannot stop thinking now, how much of the technology advance in the late 2460s and 2470s was due to a higher effort in developing war technology or studying the large debris field in orbit, or even Picard for being part of the collective?

I don't think so. According to the Technical Manual for TNG even the Enterprise D was equipped with ablative armor. Ok, it at best semi-canon, so we shouldn't think about it too much. But even if it's something new (though we already use ablative armor on modern tanks) I think Starfleet developed it against the Borg, alongside with the other new weapons Shelby mentioned.

I've always intended to go back and redo the bulk of my content. But to clarify here, This will be every once in a full moon.. maybe once or twice a month if that you'll get a redo. There are a ton of errors i made when i was first doing this and i want to correct it all.. But it wont be like.. a redo video every day or anything - so no worries on that.

Not to mention that the Maru mod makes the Sovie.. a tad OP. The phasers turn into short burst phaser that do a lot of damage, and you can fire photon and quantum torpedoes simultaneously... with three of those burst phaser arrays firing.

I'm doing a major rebalance of KM right now. Trying to make ships more inline with what we see in TMs and on screen. I have the Galaxy ready and running. No major bugs. As soon as i'm finished with the K'Vort (might take some time, i'm working on the D'Deridex right now, and she's a pain...) i will reproduce this as well. But i'll let the AI run both sides. Human controlled ships can fare way better in BC then the AI ever could.

Hey Lore! This is my favorite TNG episode. The original idea was for the enterprise c to spend a week in the future. It was going tp be multi episodes with Geordi electrocuted. Data decaputated etc, but they ran out of budget. Two really good TNG novels that you might like: “Q Squared” , in which you see the Klingon War universe but with a startling difference. The other novel is called Q and A, where you see what happened to captain Picard and the enterprise after the federation was defeated .

Perhaps the enterprise C was just trying to sneak away unnoticed, hence the meandering. It makes me think that someone took Scotty's "we'll beat the klingons even if I have to get out and push" line but didn't understand the subtlety of it. Thankfully Trek never had that problem ever again. Anyway, I think it makes sense that the Enterprise D was pulling its punches. It had to fight hard enough to keep their attention but not so hard that they just go for the C and call it a day.

Several great points made in this video. The war-focused Star Fleet would definitely have fast-tracked ablative Armor for their star ships, so the Warships Enterprise-C & D would have been able to hand longer in an over-matched battle. The Enterprise-D would have done much better against the K'Vort class Birds of Prey, if it had put forth all of its firepower & also zipped around with micro-bursts of warp power on one Klingon ship & then another & then the last one, instead of how it did do battle there at Nerendra III. By doing that, it would have made itself out to be all the more dangerous in that firefight, than doing nothing & absorbing hit after hit after hit. Anyway, great video !

I don't know if I'm remembering proper, but I think they actually explain why the D was pulling its punches and not bothering with attacking like normal, due to it being a defensive: "Hey! Look, and shoot at, me!" If it wasn't forced to take the role, no problems withstanding the K'Vort's to their* graves. The Klingons sent three because they knew how powerful that D was so they proceeded with the highest chance of winning. I (*the Klingon's)

I enjoyed this my only problem is that I believe you referred to this as an alternate universe where I believe it is an alternate timeline within the same universe I know I hate temporal mechanics as well. I honestly do enjoy all your videos and to be fair they help me get through some of my darker days. Keep up the good work and I hope I haven't offended you.

Hmm. Since the Federation had been at war for 20 years, I'm sure that they would have built ablative armor right into the hull, and strengthened their shield generators. I'll also bet that instead of bubble shields, the shields were closer to the hull, more like the TOS shields.

Yeah......war core breach....... another one...... and if we read the manual, we know they have a war core ejecting mechanism that should make these trivial. Alas....... either those ejectors didn't work as advertised or someone forgot they were there! As for the alternate timeline D, i wouldn't surprise if they reached Dominion war era of armor and shield technology earlier. I mean, it seams that once hard pressed, SF R&D can do remarkably well in relatively short times. Good vid mate, like the new format.

The new style for battle breakdowns works going forward. However, i vote for not going out of your way to sweep up and re-do your past work. Its always nice to be able to go back and see how a content creator adapts and evolves.

I like the new format. I do have a small request/suggestion. When you put text bubbles in the video, can you extend their length a little bit? Even an extra second or two would make a difference, especially in small screens.

If I were in command, I would separate the saucer (assuming the warship-D could), and give the Klingons two targets that were more maneuverable. That way, even if the warp core breach still happened, the saucer could still fight on.

I had actually heard the enterprise d was badly damaged before the battle and there is evidence of that if you look at the panels on the bridge you can see the display has several red spots on the ship seeming to mean damaged areas and perhaps the photon torpedoes had been depleted meaning all the ship had was phasers and 5 photon torpedoes.

Yeah they were really dithering around. Captain Maxwell wouldn't have put up with this. He would have summarily thrashed the 3 Klingon ships in short order and tractor beam pushed the Enterprise-C to go faster! Hehe!!!

Galaxy class prime. Most advanced ship starfleet had at the time. Gets grazed by a miranda. Warp core breach. Sovereign class rams reman warship. Smashes half the saucer section. Everything is fine.

Ever realize how Picard tells Wesley to keep within 200 Kilometers of the Enterprise C? The Enterprise D is over 600 meters in length, so if they were at 200 Kilometers distance, it might just look like a spec of dust on the viewscreen.

An inherent problem with all Hollywood combat scenes at the time... the distances and speeds these happen at, in reality you'd never see the other vessels. In the mid-90s Babylon 5 did have one episode where warships were exchanging fire with a distant target that wasn't visible. And now we have The Expanse, which has even more accurate depictions of space combat.

Cool! The episode and scene opens up an interesting question in Starfleet lore. Since we always see the Excelsior class ships in TNG in later which makes sense for the most part, but never WV ambassador class I actually wonder if all of the newer Ambassador classes like the Enterprise C era we're lost in the cardassian Border Wars? The Ambassador would have been the top of the line front of the line ships the ones that Starfleet would send out at first until they ran out of those and were forced to start using Excelsior classes again out of attrition of lost ships, and by that point the war had ended with a white peace. Would that be entry a video? There's also the problem that peaceful Starfleet wouldn't build up they're fleets to large numbers unless there was a tasty limiting ship production. Making the production of giant galaxy classes a work around of the supposed treaty.

I’ve always had issues with this battle, I don’t get why D was pulling its punches. If it had continued to attack the lead ship after it broke off it could have finished it off, the other two ships would have had to either keep attacking D or fall back, if they’d broke off to chase C they would have been jumped by D. Sure they could have cloaked but they could have been hit whilst there shields are down before they fell off D’s scopes, plus D could have then got into a covering position in case they went after C. I don’t know how to feel about your new style, I think I’d have a better idea after a few more. Although the speech bubbles were nice touch, I’m mostly here for the cynical analysis. 🙂

TNG battles don't really run the same as the movie battles i guess (budget and run times). Unlike the movies, in the show the shields often fall way faster then they do in the movies, true, but they also get back a lot faster as well. In Less then a minute at times. So i'm guessing of you don't finish your opponent right off (possibly with the first salvo), you've probably lost the chance. Heck......now i need to rewatch the episode again!

With Klingon mentality they would do anything to at least take 1 ship with them, so if enterprise D seemed to bug a threat all 3 would have broken off to fight enterprise C and most likely destroyed it

But Lore! The Enterprise C was traveling at plot speed! Thats like the fastest possible speed possible! Nothing can touch it! But now looking back, it might have had it's plot armor up so that might've slightly slowed it down.

Not surprising the alternate timeline Enterprise could take more damage. It was the product of literally decades of war without the long peace that the Prime universe had enjoyed (Border conflicts with the Cardassians and Romulan covert ops aside). Thus the lessons learned we saw pop up in Dominion War era design probably got learned much earlier.

Memory Alpha stats that the Enterprise had taken some series damage before drifting through the rift, granted the Enterprise D helped with repairs but I guess there was only so much that could be done outside of a shipyard particularly as the C's warp nacelles took damage...so may explain why she was so slow.

If the ship had taken so much damage then why move it 2000 miles away from the anomaly in an area they knew was dangerous with ships on the way?

From what I read I hazard a guess that they didn't have much choice in the matter and the ship just drifted with little control over its engines due to the damage. Data apparently states the rift is unstable and could collapse at any moment after the C comes through, so another possibility is that the C was towed clear of the rift because it was thought it would be too dangerous leaving her so close? Though, just a couple of guesses.

Well based on the amount of damage they were going back with, trying to enter an anomoly barly larger than the ship while under fire, and not sure if they would even work the correct way ( point: in STO they actually do mess up going back and end up really screwing with the time line) I don't think it is that unbealevable they didn't zoom in at full impulse.

Had she not been hampered by the need to protect the Enterprise-C it's likely that the warship would have destroyed at least two of the Klingon ship's and either driven off or disabled the third.

I think the reason C was so SLOW was it's engines were still kinda FUCKED from previous engagements with both the Romulan's and that Klingon scout ship.

The Time line Enterprise D War ship had shield of 3,120,000 and was able to take 96 shot from Klingons ships. base on klingon 32,500 Disruptor seen on DS9 and STNG. to note on this formula the Time zone Enterprise D and Dominion GALAXY CLASS at the end of war have same shields strength. do you think this was on purpose?

Could the slow speed of the Enterprise C be explained by damage to her impulse engines? She may have done considerable repairs by the time the Klingons arrived but she was far from fully operational and, according to the dialogue, it seemed the crew of the C was concentrating more on repairing the tactical systems than the engines.

I have always had a problem with the way Picard fought this battle. Pulling punches makes no sense, even if protecting the C. He waited until it was almost too late to order continual fire of all phasers. He could have done long range fire with torpedoes the moment that the Klingons came into range... guess the writers just wanted drama
