The 2022 Vuelta starts in Utrecht, Netherlands, with a team time trial - a discipline that has become increasingly rare in recent years. At 23.4km-long with a pan-flat elevation profile, it's a great stage for teams who are stacked with time trial specialists. That said, the circuit around Utrecht is far from straightforward, with no fewer than 23 corners for the riders to navigate in tight, team-time-trial formation.

I’m a bit sad that the commentary didn’t really mention Gesink’s first leader’s jersey in a Grand Tour. His team was all smiles, they planned this for him and the crowd loved it as well. He deserves it, for all he has done for the team when they were going through some very rough years. And also nice to see someone who was capable of finishing GC well in the top 5 now finally has a day on the top step :D

Who doesn’t love a TTT?! The speed, the tight-robotic formation of futuristic aero helmets and skin suits, the almost mesmeric conveyor belt of riders moving off the front and back down the line to recoup strength at the back. Ooh, I think I need a shower!

Enjoyed the TTT but the result does indicate the problem with them which is that any GC contenders in the lower ranked teams now have a big time gap to make up.

But basically a similar thing will be a big issue for a GC contender without a strong team for the mountains. So is it really an issue with the course? I like the fact that the TTT still has a spot every now and then in a major race, just like a day of cobbles or gravel.

@@mscbijles1256 A GC contender without a strong team for the mountains can still stay in the peloton, sometimes even win stages and gain time, like Pogacar does for example. Just because their domestiques drop it doesn't mean a death knell to the team leader. It's not so in TTTs. Even a mediocre time trialist like Carapaz gains time on better men against the clock like Kelderman simply because they're on a richer=stronger team. TTTs should have a spot every now and then in a major race, like continental and world championships, the Eindhoven TTT and the Hammer series (thanks UCI!). But IMO it's BS that a GC contender should gain major time on another not because he's better, but his team is.

@@andrasszabo1570 To be fair the gaps were larger than people expected even with it being a TTT. The real issue is TJV and Ineos outspending everyone else into oblivion.

@@andrasszabo1570 Kelderman will be able to take his time back on Carapaz in the ITT. I could be wrong though, I haven’t checked the route and I’m simply assuming there is at least 1 ITT for this vuelta.

@@therret2901 No, Ineos have a weaker team that previously, so a faster time & larger time gaps should have been expected. This is just a function of not all teams being equal

Hey Patrick, In 10 years we very likely won't have the Vuelta, Tdf and Giro. No one want to talk about the real problem. It'll be 50+ deg C in mainland Europe and food and water will have started to become problematic for many in the population. It's absolutely tragic and no one is coming to save us. It's only us. We need to stop emitting greenhouse gas now and massively to give ourselves a fighting chance. Can you see Macron or any political party doing that? I don't think so. Almost The only people doing anything and sounding the alarm are just stop oil, XR, Insulate Britain, Derniere Renovation, Last Generation, Ende Gelande, Save old Growth, Fireproof Australia and so on. Lighting the blue touch paper of peaceful revolution seems to be the only way.

After watching this I am totally perplexed with the UCI not allowing "puppy-paws" position on breakaways ! Averaging 56km/hr + on narrow super technical roads full of barriers & bystanders & the riders so close to each other... The UCI is severely wacked !

Given the budgets and the big Watts of the riders of Ineos and Jumbo, Quickstep did amazingly well loosing only 14 seconds. They have a young lean, climbing orientated team and those boys are all less than 68 kg. Big guns like Asgreen, Cattaneo and Lampaert were not there. With some of these guys they would have beaten Ineos for sure and battled with Visma for the win. Many think it is normal that Quickstep should be top 3 but with this climbers team it is just an amazing result.

The main advantage of starting the Grand Tours in the north of continental europe are the cooler climate expectations... In the TdF water was sprayed on the road in the hotter parts to stop the tar running, and cool riders down, likely as a secondary benefit. How much longer will these competitions survive has to be the question as the climate heats further and further. Droughts and climate chaos visibly continue to increase while governments really don't give a F*%K with short term profit for the banks and corporations continuing apace. It would be a joke, if it weren't tragic. Remind me which climate criminal fossil fuel corp are greenwashing their image on a once famous TdF team? Something GCN would never never mention.
