The Battle of Gettysburg offers timeless lessons to Soldiers, military leaders, corporate CEOs and others. Listen to Professor Len Fullenkamp, Army War College historian, talk about how more often than not, a key individual, at a key place, at a key moment makes a difference.

I have to hand it to the US Army War College. They are putting together a series of gifted and deeply penetrating analyses - and making them topical and relevant to today. And I agree with the comments below. This gentleman is a wonderful historian and powerful storyteller. We need more like him.

Chamberlain did a marvellous and heroic job but you could also argue that John Buford`s initiative of holding the high ground early, bought time for the federal troops, and resulted in Lee having to chase the game thereafter.

Castle Lodge I concur 100%. In fact that's who I thought this video would be dedicated based on the title.

And Gen. Warren who saw that LRT was undefended and sent word down to send forces to the summit. And many other examples of seemingly small events that turned into key turning points. Endlessly fascinating history.

That shadow of the mighty presence describes perfectly the sensation I felt visiting Normandy. Seeing the perfectly aligned crosses of the cemetary, I fell to my knees and cried. The sacrifice I saw-- clear as day-- and the wisdom of the soldiers, why we fought, and what was at stake, was shown to me. I will always remember that.

Hunter H It doesn't hurt that the cause was just. That doesn't impugn the valor of men sent to die in a bad cause. It DOES make culpable and damn the ideologues who sit in safety -- prodigal with the lives of other men's sons -- when they squander those lives in the service of such a cause.

The recitation of Chamberlain's famous quote regarding the spiritual nature of the battlefield that future visitors would literally sense, is something I experienced myself many years ago at Gettysburg. Fullenkamp"s mention of the heroic initiative exhibited by Haskell at a time of extreme stress is important, as those unexpected actions often mean the difference between victory and defeat. The heroic charge of the young Arthur MacArthur at Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga is another example. The failure of Longstreet as a commander to make necessary and immediate modifications to Lee's plan of attack is an example of how a disaster can occur by someone NOT taking an initiative.

Wow !! absolutely Fabulous rendition of Chamberlain dedication speech !!! You are a marvelous historian that I would not have been able to appreciate in my College years....but now as a Civil War buff I must submit to the Power of those words and the manner in which it was delivered ! Chamberlain was a brilliant orator as you are a lecturer. Thank You for the passing of that vision into my soul, Prof Fullenkamp !! Best Regards, Jim in NH

It was my experience, 20 years past, that these individuals who rise to an occasion would do so against the intention of their superiors. Young officers were generally a browbeaten lot and afraid to make a decision. Sadly, I had to watch the Army rise from the ashes of Vietnam, excel, and now stand gutted.

"In war, men are nothing; one man is everything". The unknown Tribune at Cynoscephalae, Corporal Lafontaine at Leipzig, Corporal Mitchell during the Antietam campaign, and Clarence McClusky at Midway are just a few more examples of the truth of Napoleon's words.

Jeff Davis wrote two works of Fiction: The Rise of the Confederate Government, and the Fall of the Confederate Government. People who were there laughed uproariously at his prevarications.

I hate the Confederacy, but as a former sailor I honor both sides great deeds and courage on the field during the conflict. If President Davis and his peers had dealt with their own bigoted attitudes and ask and enforced Southerners to turn from the wicked Slavery institution , then maybe the South would had done better fighting united then, just for anglo western whites.

johnny Horton I'm sure you mean 'secede', but after years of defunding our public schools, and pursuing the policies advocated by Betsy DeVos, I suppose we can expect no better. This time, we might just say, "good riddance."

johnny Horton, You speak like the south winning would have been a good thing. An educated guess tells me you're not black. You do have a point, the same stupid that brought the south to attack the north is infesting this country. Thank god it's a minority view, gerrymandering & the Electoral College has given repugs power beyond their true numbers. Trump very well could fk it up beyond repair, as he's done with everything else he's ever touched. And it's allot easier to destroy something then make something, especially given the GOP tactics of tyranny by the minority.
