Battlefield - The Tunisian Campaign - Part 2 

My father fought in the battle for Crete and all through the desert campaign, Sicily and Italy. He was wounded at the battle for Casino. Although he did tell some of what he experienced I never realised just how hard the fighting was until I watched these videos on the Tunisian campaign. He died when he was 94 and I bitterly regret not asking him to tell me more about what he saw and did. He always said that it was difficult for his generation to explain to my generation about total war as he knew we would never really understand what he and his compatriots went through without experiencing it at first hand.

the Germans put off invading Malta and in the they end, could not get supplies and fuel because the British held Malta right in the middle of Rommel's supply route.

Fun fact : Monty's son, studied and became an engineer working for Shell. The company which slaughtered whole villages because of their denial to leave their ancestral places in Africa, for the company to establish oil wells. Thus, the moto came out...."Go Shell, Go to hell".

The German Axis allies (Italians, Hungarians, and Romanians) are often derided as incompetent. It strikes me that in the North American campaign we see the Italians performing well when reasonably led and armed with effective weapons. This gets at the NAZI problem. Much of the Army in the major campaign I(the Ostkrieg) was unmotorized infantry moving east with horse-drawn carts. Not only could the Germans not adequately supply their own forces, but also those of their allies. The reason for this is twofold: 1) not just industrial capacity, but industrial policy--the poor use of the country's substantial industrial base. After all, Germany had a larger industrial base than the Soviet Union, but the Soviets outproduced them in many key areas. 2) The diversion of industrial resources from the Ostkrieg by the war in the West.

'Anglo-American forces', not a very accurate description

This was an excellent presentation of the Tunisian Campaign which does not get the coverage it deserves. It represented one of Hitler's biggest Second World War blunders and led Goebbels to describe the defeat as being as bad as that at Stalingrad. I am sad that so few people have viewed it. The glossier animated version are preferred. Thanks

A bit confused re the Mareth line offensive ... he says the NZ division is attacking south through the Matmata hills ... then the NZers are making no headway in the north so he decides to change his plan and send his armour to catch up with the NZers in the south. Did the NZ division attack on two fronts here.

I dont understand why you took out the maps?

An interesting side note. At 27:44 you see Rommel walking through a forest of Prickly Pear Cactus, looks as natural as the sand under their feet, except Prickly Pear Cactus is a strictly a New World plant, like the Tomato, Potato and Corn, it seems to have taken over the drier regions of the world except it gets nowhere the press that the other New World plants get.
