33... Wow. My 12 year old son and I watched it premiere the same day his mother left us. For the remainder of the series' run, the two of us never missed an episode's debut. Even when I was working in the restaurant business, I told any prospective employer that I was not available on Friday nights because this was one thing my son and I did together.

Another, smaller, fantastic BSG moment. When Adama and the captain of the Pegasus are each parallel ordering the assassination of the other. But Adama already had this plan used against him, and he lived. So he doesn't just order that she be shot. No, he learns from the previous attempt's mistake and gets specific in the order that she be shot in the head. Characters who show they have been thinking about the events around them and learning make the show awesome.

It's a shame it petered out a bit in the end, but I loved it through the New Caprica arc, and they still got some damn good moments in through the last couple seasons. Lee's speech at Baltar's trial, for example, about why Baltar deserves justice and 'we just don't like you very much' is not a good enough reason to kill him and paves the path to barbarism.

You know, there's no way the Fleet could have kept the Pegasus. The Beast (or was she the Bucket?) isn't a defensive vehicle. It's designed to fight long-term in enemy territory. Yes, the feet could have used it, but the Murcury-Class was, I think, why the Cylons attacked. To have kept her would be to change from having a running defense to transition to a guerilla war. Adama is not Cain and he's not Mazian (to bring another I.P. in) he has people to defend.
@wargearinternational7679

The Galactica died like 3-4 years after the second cylon war started. If there hadnt been a truuths until then the Colonial Fleet would have been defenseless.
@frankharr9466
@frankharr9466 5 лет назад
@@wargearinternational7679 Well, sort of. But I'm making an art point. The whole BSG story is about running away. Something like the Pegasus doesn't fit in that. The Pegasus needs a different kind of story. That's what the P and Cain fit each other so nicely.

Too happy? I cried. Other than that, I agree the "sense" of it all was... kinda weird, but then I guess having them arrive in ancient Egypt wouldn't make all that much sense either. To be honest, any period would be weird. I guess they chose what they chose to focus on the characters and not have to explain how an existing civilization accepted men from the sky. In all honesty I would rather they didn't find any proto-humans. Just land on empty planet, watch the animals, walk away alone or in groups and leave it at that. The skip to modern day would explain humans survived, but I guess lost everything in few generations due to spread and slowly humanity went through it's history to AD 2000 New York. I just don't think it was all that important or betrayed the tone of the series. The tone of the series was struggle and hope, and at least in the end they could find a little bit of peace. Leave it at that and ignore the rest. Let him just lay that damn cabin. Alone. With His pain.

The Sword of Damocles in the guise of AI technology is how I would put BSG in a nutshell. While I love the original from the 1978, this re imagining was great even though they changed Cylon origin to basically The Terminator ( They made it their own though) with a extremely accurate portrayal to how a Space Navy and Marine Corps would actually function. My biggest issue with scifi like Stargate was the over saturation of Air Force personnel in Space Warfare even though they're never trained for Carrier Ops, Driving Ships, and barely at all in CQB not mention their pilots aren't trained for Carrier Landings in the least.

AH, BSG S1, one of the finest sci-fi's since Babylon 5 IMHO. This episode really was an outstanding piece of TV!

BSG could and maybe should have ended with the Rescue at New Caprica. Like a lot of TV shows it loses it's way somewhat later on and fizzed out a bit. Nowhere near as bad as GoT however!

I love this show as it’s my personal favorite Sci-Fi TV series of all time. Season 1 is great, but I also enjoyed the frack out of Exodus 1 & 2, and Razor! Even the final Episode, and last battle of the Galactica was great.

I remember watching an episode (tho I think it was another one, the one where they show the president the Blackbird) and this music started playing. A friend who hates sci-fi and never watched an episode of the show goes like: "What is that !?" I go like... well, it's Battlestar Galactica. He replied: "No not that, the music, that's an absolutely amazing good piece, wow !" I agree. It's my favorite track of the entire show. Gritty done right, and relegates ST:Discovery to a joke show without a soul.

I still love Babylon 5, Deep Space Nine & Original Battlestar Galactica first seasons, without the original there would have never been the remake/reboot/remake of Galactica. I like the original episode de Hand of God of the original. The remake Galactica copy a lot from Babylon 5's style. P.S keep up the great videos Spacedock.

Hey Spacedock, I wanted to take a moment to use this video to disagree with an earlier point you made. In your episode on how to save the Pegasus, you said that Admiral Adama would have left Lee behind to save the fleet being a more practical and experienced commander. But there's a bit in Season 1 that I think contradicts that theory, if only just slightly. In Season 1, Episode 5, You Can't Go Home Again, then Commander Adama lingers in a single system to try to find the Viper Crash and a hopefully still living Starbuck, well past her expected Oxygen capacity. When asked by Lee if he would have lingered that long for him, Commander Adama tells him that if it were Lee that had crashed, the Fleet would never leave. I'm actually curious about your own thoughts on that though.

I loved BSG as a kid since I was watched it age 14-19 (2004 - 2009) when it was in Australia anyway. Loved the visual effects and the ship designs. Season 1 was excellent and Season 2 was good but while Season 3 and 4 had some good episodes I was rather let down by the shock reveals and the disappointing ending. Will happily rewatch but as I grow older I feel that I was let down by Season 3 and 4.

You give this show way too much credit. Yes, the portrayal of a small group of surviving and fleeing star travelers has never been told so grippingly and impressively before. And yes the series is anything but a bad copy of the original or a "Termiator but in Space". But you overlook the, politely put, problematic frame story. which is full of mystical and religious uproar. Where divine miracles, prophecies and visions are central plot elements. That's why "Battlestar Galactica Blood & Chrome" is the best the franchise has to offer. Because the film fortunately leaves all this nonsense behind. It's too bad they didn't make a series out of it. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Nice work, except "33" was certainly not the pilot. It was the first episode after the miniseries, which served as the pilot.

Though I don't disagree with you Daniel, BSG had the benefit of already having the world build for them and all they really had to worry about was ice breaking the characters. They definitely did a fantastic job with season one but all the other scifi series with a lackluster season one, like you said, had to do some lore, world building, and character intros while trying to keep things interesting enough to capture viewership. Everyone else did this over the course of 2 seasons or so because they had more ice breaking to do with their audience.

I agree season 1 is the best. Its was so unfortunate that they went with the lazy dogshit that plagues sci-fi. Prophecy, mysticism, visions, etc. Absolute crap. It became a kind of sci-fi lost. The "final five" stuff, oh Jesus! Its soooooo hackneyed and awful. What a shame as it started so well. The initial season created such a sense of loss and struggle and desperation. It was so disappointing to see it devolve into tropes and nonsense.

Umm, sorry, but BSG's first season was it's best because they ran out of ideas and were gasping from there. But yeah, Season 1 was magnificent, so good people hung on hoping something that great would happen again.

For me, BSG started off great but was unraveled by bad choices later on. The whole prophecy/religion angle felt like a retread of DS9, which Moore had already explored. The cylons came off as too human, especially the further into the show you got. So it ended up feeling like humans vs humans. It also would have been more interesting to me to have them arrive at earth at the end of season 3 hoping for salvation, only to discover a current modern earth that needed protecting. It would have been a cool twist on Robotechs beginning.

there's so many great moments in BSG, this being one of em.... and I liked S1 of B5, I missed Sinclair when he left but I grew to love Sheridan too.... and S1 of TNG was good but i do agree more showrunners need to decide early on what the show is and how to present it....like Expanse knew what it was from the start and wasted no time getting into it but still built an already tense situation up over the course of the show, when we're dropped into Expanse it's in the middle of a lont era of tension between Earth, Mars and the belt....

Agreed, 33 is probably the best opening episode of any sci-fi series. That episode has been on my mind since I was a little kid, such a great opening. Technically the GSG TV movie is the start of the series but I suppose 33 still counts as a pilot. And the high point of Hand of God gets me every time, just hearing that theme play on this video gets me a little emotional.

A lot of science fiction series have average first and second seasons, and start becoming very good in its third or fourth season. Battlestar Galactica was different; it started out great, was still good at its middle point (when they settled on that planet) and became unwatchably bad in the last episodes (plotholes, nonsense stories, random nihilistic out-of-character actions). This pattern is more common in normal series which keep going on for too long and/or can't tie up their ending. Another science fiction series that I can think of with this pattern is Sliders. Which started out good and just gradually became worse and worse.

Tied with Firefly. Completely different story types and each is wonderful. Expanses is trying to combine the two and doing a good enough job. But the story is a bit too cliche compared to Firefly and BSG.

I suspect the 1sf season was phenomenal cause RDM & co wrote with an end in mind, unlike most shows who write to get renewed. Indeed, if we are ever to return to quality broadcasting, I would argue writers and producers should contain their series, estimate the number of seasons necessary to tell a good story and write within that, before the pitch ever starts.

33 isn't the pilot episode, that was the actual pilot episodes The Miniseries from 2013. 33 is just the first episode of the season, but I think the 2 part Miniseries must be considered as 'the pilot'
