Damn, don’t think I’ve ever seen Arcus play an NES game that he doesn’t absolutely dominate before this. A testament to just how tough this game really is.
To be fair to Arcus, this was only his 6th run. It just takes a while to get everything down. His Kirbys Adventure video from a few months back was the same. Lots of mistakes, not sure what to do with certain bosses, dying. It just takes time. I just think its awesome that we get to see Arcus grow as a player in games hes not familiar with.
Had this game as a kid. Never made it past the snake level. Finally beat it in my 20s on emulator abusing save state. Fun game but ridiculously difficult as well.
@@TheUnapologeticGeek ha that's funny because I could never get past the snakes either. Until later in life with an emulator and save states like the guy above.
Man, the game designers for this really pulled out all the stops. Difficulty aside, this was really one of the most unique games of its time, with some of the most innovative level design ever.
@redmondMonk, ironically, this game has a ton of them, almost as many as the pigs. Apparently, The Dark Queen has low standards for beings to join her army.
The most chill man playing one of the most hard games of the Nes, nice 49:20 fun fact: This stage has a ""bug"' in multiplayer where the 2nd player can't control it's character at the start, then he just die (It's more like a programing error because it always happens as far as I know)
Nice work, love to see it! Battletoads is definitely a game that takes some time... it really does. Recently though, I managed to play this game while RUNNING 🚴 🏃 at the same time, as part of a wellness awareness series. Getting by turbo tunnel, volkmire’s inferno, clinger winger, etc while jogging is seriously no joke lol plus you know, all the other platforming aspect in the game! It was episode 4 of Running & Gaming, I hope you check it out, Arcus! You’re welcome on anytime too.
WR on Ninja Gaiden, the presumed hardest game, but seeing Arcus run Battletoads and failing in segments gives me hope to beat it and to see him improve!
@Danny Chaos But Ninja Gaiden was always fairly easy to beat as long as you kept that cool swirl-slash weapon. Battletoads however, that game if played without taking any warps and without trying to cut any corners... is HARD AS F***. Even many people who used the Game Genie or save states now still can't beat it. Definitely one of the hardest NES games made.
@@HowlingMoonCinemas nah, respect only mate. I've heard both games listed in the top ten hardest games ever -- Battletoads obviously being higher than Ninja Gaiden. I did not mean to take anything away from Arcus' accomplishment, in either game. I, myself had only grown up with a Mega Drive (I'm Australian, so a Genesis if that's easier on you) and have only gotten Battletoads from Rare Replay. For me it does take a lot of practice, patience and skill for both games, admittedly Ninja Gaiden looks easier, having no access to play it, but, I remain hopeful in beating Battletoads, seeing an Idyllic Speedrunner struggle where I cannot fathom at present 😊.
@@dannychaos3281 Wait a minute... 🤣🤣🤣🤣but you just said that you had no access to play Ninja Gaiden. How could you assume then that it is so hard and one of the hardest NES games to beat??? It's not. All you need is to keep that swirl slash attack.
Sooo many people thought the Turbo Tunnels were the hardest part of this game, and they never made it past there (or not much further, at least). Little did they know, there's like 3 or 4 more sections of the game like that. :\
I finally beat this game (and many other difficult NES games I'd never beaten) in my mid 20s. Now I can beat it pretty regularly and fairly fast... Only took 25 years or so. Thanks for helping me figure out Ninja Gaiden btw, you were who got me through that the first time.
I was about 13-14 when i got this game (1991 or 1992) kind of an early start. Didn't take too long to pass Level 3. Game is just a matter of memorization and super-sharp reflexes. The only real problems i have in the game are in Level 7 Volkmire's Inferno and usually the final section with the gates, that last one especially. Nice run ! The deaths are expected.
I wasn't surprised that most of the run time was spent in the Terra Tubes. That level is a nightmare. Then again, everyone has that one level in the game that breaks them - for me, it was the Rat Race. Took me YEARS to get that third segment down.
would it be inpolite to ask how old you are arcus? just wondering if you grew up with these games and got good back then or your mastery was a more recent phenomenon. LOVE your videos man!
My favorite NES game. Actually beat it back in the day. The key is level 2 (never use the warp). You better get at least 10 lives from the crows. You can rapid kick them off the same wall.
First time on the channel. You beat the turbo tunnel so effortlessly. As hard as I tried as a kid I was never able to but it till the fairly recently, and a I still struggle to beat it lol.
I play many smash your face into a wall difficult games. But I remember giving up on this one as a kid because i couldn't beat that first jet race stage. Loved the game but could only get to level 3. I think at some point in gonna go back and beat this one. I live a good challenge. And this game the rest of the way looks really fun. Really difficult too but I like the variety this game has.
I beat this game one time. I got a bunch of extra lives on level 2, memorized as much of the game as I could, and managed to find my way up the final tower the first time I ever made it to said tower. I'm the only person I know personally who ever legit beat it. lol good old NES difficulty.
The fact that you can beat Ninja Gaiden in two and a half minutes one-handed while blind folded makes it hard to imagine that you hadn't yet done this run before.
Highly doubt he'll read this BUT I'd absolutely LOVE to see him do Faxanandu for NES ( I prolly spelled that wrong) I loved playing it when i was young and thought it was the hardest game i had. Watching my old favorite Duck Tales now 😁😍😁😭
Ghosts N Goblins says hello - it's way way harder. Battletoads is not hard it's just pattern recognition and memorization. Of cause you insta die to new patterns but once you have practiced them all, the game very beatable. Apart from clinger winger on emulator. You need a frame perfect emulator for that stage because any lag just means you can't beat the stage. Works mostly well on console though.
@@the8thark Yeah, no it isn't. Yes, GnG gets very hard towards the end and luck also plays a factor. But infinite continue's make it beatable for most people with some patience even if they suck. That's why guys like AVGN and SomecallmeJohnny could beat Ghosts 'n Goblins but can't get anywhere in Battleoads. Battletoads does become beatable eventually and even easy if you put in all the practice and basically have the whole game embedded into your muscle memory, but this process takes way way longer than getting through Ghosts 'n Goblins for just about anyone.
Upper half of the screen is the best place to throw rocks for the boss 1 fight! Your rock can hit almost anywhere on the screen so get up high and loose them early - the crosshairs are just for the ultra-cool first-person "looking from the gunner seat" kinda view :P Also how far ahead of the curve was this game with its parallax backgrounds and high-fidelity audio.. might need to rock another play through on Rare Replay on Xbox :P Edit: And just like that I've ordered the original cart. Merry xmas to me :P
So once again the coyboy proves he's not actually human! Anyone watching this that's not aware of Battle Toads, it's notoriously difficult! As are most of Rares games, I had cobra triangle and to this day it gives me nightmares😆 brutality hard.
I'm thinking "Whaaa? An arcus Battletoads speed run???" Then I see "playthrough"...Yeah, it really is that difficult I guess lol! I remember as a kid wanting to beat every game I rented...I must've rented this game a dozen times and never beat it.
@Eagleeye Jones well his video what's for demonstration purposes. I'm sure if he actually wanted to beat it fast as hell he could so it's undetermined for now
Game-genie? Warps? Nope, back in the day, we would play the first two levels, over and over and over. Die trying to memorize stage 3. On epic days we did die on stage 4. Eventually, we would finish stage 1 without taking a single hit. But we never made it to the end. Only kid that ever did was Steve. Steve did own a game-genie, and he was a rotten cheat.
@DirtyThirst, no, Battletoads, the OG Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, Silver Surfer, and Little Red Hood started the standard of difficult video games. Ninja Gaiden (2004), Shinobi (2002), Devil May Cry 3, Golden Axe: Beast Rider, and the Dark Souls/Demon's Souls/Bloodborne games all perfected the concept.
