I was kind of thinking the same thing, I always have thought this way. It is essentially not having any beliefs in the first place, immediately evaluating everything on new information as it is learned and vs-a-versa. Richard Gates I think your father has good advice : ) but Bayes' idea is that you do have a prior belief, and then you update it based on the likelihood of the observed evidence under the assumption that your prior belief is true. So if I give you a coin, you will assume it's a regular coin and the chances of heads/tail are 50/50. That is your prior belief. You now toss that coin 10 times and get 9 tails. That is a very unlikely outcome under the assumption of your prior belief that it is 50/50. Because it's very unlikely to see such results, you conclude that the coin is biased and update your belief, which now is called posterior belief, i.e. "after the fact", as opposed to prior - "before".
PavelSTL Not really, to have a belief is to not question if it is true, in some sense. An acceptance of an assumed fact. It's like it says right in the thumbnail, "my beliefs are grayscale", which essentially aren't beliefs at all. The acceptance part for me tips either way, depending on the amount of information supporting one side or the other. I never believed in a god, but I would constantly test the existence by evaluating any information one way or the other, and so my conclusion is there either can be a god or can't be a god. And the evidence is leaning toward there can't be a god when it's properties contradict reality and logic. You don't need to believe in a god first to evaluate it's truth. You don't need to believe a coin flip is fair, and it certainly is not, but it is close enough to be a useful tool in resolving an impasse. I think a coin flip should be fair because it has 2 sides, but if it comes up tails 9/10 more than once, then I start to think it's a trick coin, I don't question the fact that it has two sides.
