I'm the opposite 😔 I have ADHD and mindless gameplay + lots of non-voiced text to read makes me restless and anxious. I love Bayonetta so much but this game just wasn't made for me. I'm glad others get to enjoy it though!
The more I see of this game, the more it seems to be a mix of Okami + Bayonetta. I've never played a Bayonetta game but I'm far more inclined to try the series with this entry first over the mainline games since this is the type of game that appeals to me. I also have a feeling that this game is also going to be an expensive collector's item one day.
This game I think caters to cozy gamers extremely well. Definitely disagree that it’s only for children as we all have our own preferences so what might not be an amazing game for u could be just that for someone else. It’s not my kind of game but it definitely has a vast amount of people who will love it. Whatever u are all playing I hope u have a wonderful time doing it.
I wasn’t expecting this game to be difficult, but I’m still very excited to pick it up. I’ve fallen in love with the Bayonetta franchise over the last year or two, and am excited for more stories and lore from this universe
There's nothing wrong with kids games. Pokemon and Kirby are easy games, and they're for kids. That doesn't make them bad games. Just like this is not a bad game, it's just not super difficult.
Didn’t really mention anything about the narrative. The review made combat and mechanics the central focus. I am a Bayonetta fan and I am excited for this because, believe it or not, there are Bayo fans who want to find out more about the lore (or maybe I am the one guy). After playing the demo, I know that I am buy this game. It plays very well and looks amazing, most noteworthy is that it leans way into where it intends to go, the narrative. If people are expecting depth within the combat mechanics, they can’t read the room. The game it literally in a storybook format. Thanks for the review.
After seeing this on the Nintendo Direct, I was interested. I've not played the other Bayonetta games because I'm not good at fast-paced combat, and I hoped this game was kinder and gentler. I played the demo last weekend. I'm buying it because the story hooked me and the graphics are gorgeous! I can't wait to play it.
As a fan of the series, I was thrilled when this was announced, it is the perfect entry point for anyone looking to get into the series who may not necessarily be much into a edgy action game. I finished up my livestream today with a huge grin on my face at how great almost every aspect of this game is... and I am looking forward to streaming more once the full version drops in a few days!
I've played the demo and really loved it! The world is gorgeous to look at and it rewards exploration, and doesn't punish a bit of sloppiness too hard, which is something I appreciate these days. And it's interesting to experience how Bayonetta was like before she actually became... well... Bayonetta. Now, for full disclosure I do own the first two Bayonetta games, but I've only played through maybe a 1/4 of the first game. So it's not as if I'm especially invested in the gameplay of the main games. So cannot tell if a hardcore fan of those will like this game. But for me it's a winner, and I'll definitely get the full version soon!
Just finished the game and the bonus story that you unlock when doing so. I am going to go back and get 100% now. This review seems fairly accurate. Towards the end, the game does suffer from repetition, particularly from the battles feeling mostly the same. With that said I was impressed by the enemy variety and the ways they were introduced. Was this game really the pushover that critics say? Well, aside from the ending stage which really feels like its own game, the game is relatively easy on "normal" difficulty" mode. I found it to be just enough of a challenge to keep me engaged, but not nearly enough to have to go back and really learn the mechanics or practice to get past. Most fights and puzzles can be completed on their first attempt. Don't take me wrong though, there are some very creative and interesting puzzles that will take you a couple tries to beat. This is probably when the game is at it's best: the combination of incredible visuals, controlling two characters simultaneously, and also solving puzzles is a truly awesome gaming experience. The final part of the game takes a few plot twists and leaves you fighting multiple bosses while also going through some fun action sequences. The final "final" boss is easily the hardest fight in the game requiring some fairly tight timing and movement. This is where we get a glimpse of a traditional Bayonetta game. But judging this game on combat alone would be unfair. This is a story-driven experience with plenty of areas to unlock and explore. You will want to sit back and read all the intriguing lore that you stumble upon and shoot for that 100% completion. Overall a great game for the Switch that looks amazing, plays great, and might leave you with the feels in the end: 8.5/10 for me.
“Who is this for?” I can certainly see why some may see this game this way. To me, this seems like a niche title that will be cherished more down the line. I am grateful that it has come out and I think it will be one of those lost gems in the years to come. It’s absolutely stunning and is going to age like a fine wine.
Really underrated by NintendoLife, it's a fantastic and beautiful game. I'm glad Nintendo approved of this project and now people that are not necessarily into the regular Bayonetta games and younger audiences can also enjoy this character.

The game reminds me of what would be a handheld / DS iteration of the series. Only the DS doesn't exist anymore. So it gives of a lower budget vibe. It reminds me sooooo much of Okamiden on the DS. Not just the visuals too. The problem I'm having with this game is that it's like..12 hours long and £50. The gameplay doesn't seem thaaaaat good and as far as I know there's no replay value once you beat the game. The game seems to rely strongly on the whimsical vibe and overall tone above everything else. So I'll probably check it out if it goes down in price. Otherwise, budgets a bit tight and can't really spend £50 on a game that I'll likely beat in a few days
The gameplay is great and there’s a lot of amazing games with 60 bucks that are 8-10 hours. Also all bayonetta games have lots of shit to unlock after you beat it and great replay value
@@hatchell18 I've yet to see any indication there is anything to unlock or replay value in this game like previous Bayo games. Seems like a one and done affair.
You just need to admit you gave it a 7 cuz it wasn’t a “hard” game but not every game needs to be hard, they clearly had a vision with this game and it seems to be working fine.
Gameplay is a core part of game enjoyment, particularly for platinum games. If the game has 0 difficulty then there's a hard limit to how satisfying the gameplay is
@LoGcXxFaZeDxX yes, however if the game is too hard/complicated/not easy to understand l, then the player get frustrated and gives the game a low score so it the same thing.
I think the reasons for why it’s not a hard game are what makes that score. Games can be easy and enjoyable if they still feel fresh throughout the whole experience. Their score for Kirby and the Forgotten land (9/10), another easy game, proves this. That 7/10 is still a great score, and I feel it is justifiable because of the bogged down, repetitive nature of the combat. Like said in the review, this game is great, but could’ve done more with pushing and expanding on it’s ideas. As a huge Bayonetta fan, I can accept and appreciate this title for what it is. I’m super glad it exists, and I play it for sure, but it does seem to me like it could do even more. I hope this isn’t a one time thing for the series, as I would love more experimentation in Bayonetta.
You screwed up when you kept critiquing Bayonetta origins after you already gave the 7 score. It feels like damage control after giving such a average score for a really good looking game.
Thank you so much for this video/ I did place an order for it about 6 hours ago, weirdly an hour before you posted this video. I did spend some time looking into it today and all in all it seems quite well received across RU-vid etc. Everyone's pretty much said the same thing here. I personally haven't played Bayonetta 1, 2 or 3. They look overly button bash, flashy and crazy so it's not yet appealed to me. It lost me at gun heels. -BUT when I saw this pop up some months back I was really intrigued. I personally like the the story/ tale look. I love the art. I also love that they have taken a flashy gun game and turned it into something so calm and beautiful. It has peaked my interest in the other three games I have to admit it. chances are, I will buy them once I receive this game to complete the set. I also felt pressure to buy the game as the Nintendo store was the only place I could find where the game comes with a steelbook. I like the style of this game and i for sure want to give it a good go. The price is a little steep though I recon. (for the physical)
As a prequel it makes sense for this game to be as it is, more than a child directed game it is the vision of the Bayonetta world through the eyes of a child, which would otherwise collide with the levels of difficulty and style that the main series can provide. Little cereza could and should not face crazy levels of difficulty and here she faces the difficulty that a child should handle when exploring the forest. I doubt fans will be disappointed with this game, cause it delivers a new experience in a different way to get to know little cereza a little better. It is a strong game in the sense that it can deliver a nice experience for everyone, fans an newcomers alike.
Idk of what age the reviewer is, but I'm 41 and I'm very much looking forward to play this gorgeous game! The idea of skipping through this game in 10 hours seems wrong. When reviewing games, keep in mind that this isn't work for the most people buying it. It's for fun! If you say this is 10 hours of playing, you miss out on A LOT. I don't get why you're so negative about this game. And don't try to compare too much to the Bayonetta games. I would never play Bayonetta 1/2/3 for fun - but Origins? Yes! Try the IGN review instead and re-review this. Qualified reviewers only ;)
I wasn't sure about this game, then I played the demo and I was sold so quick. The Bayo connection is definitely odd but this is right up my alley. And my goodness is it absolutely gorgeous. This was made for the OLED in handheld. Won't be getting it right away but man it hit the spot for me. I'd love to see companies taking some risks like this. Variety is the spice of life and all.
I really enjoyed the demo. I never played a Bayonetta game before (though I know some things about their stories), and I know this has nothing to do with a traditional Bayonetta game, but I think it looks amazing. And I liked the gameplay in the demo. What I worry about is the length of the main story. Is it 15 hours? 20? 25? As long as I don't know, I can't buy the game because 60 euros is quite the price, and I simply cannot justify spending this much on a 10 hour experience.
“Who is this even for?” is such a weak, entitled, poisonously consumer-brained criticism. Sometimes games are just art, just ideas their developers were passionate about. Not everything is a risk-adverse attempt at appealing to a demographic.
This game is my first Bayonetta game. I'm impressed with the style and the fact that it's a new-to-Bayonetta friendly game. By the way, I'm not sure this game's audience is children. It's a casual game, for sure, but little details in the game are just weird? I'm not sure how to describe this feeling. I mean, I felt uneasy when I encountered the Wisps with something that might be cause of their death or when I finished the jester boss. Cereza blew up his body with a bomb in a colorful way. It's like sugar coating things, so it looks less depressing.
I'm really disappointed by this review. The game is beautiful and I don't agree with many of the negative point brought up. If this was called Zelda you'll probably have given an higher score.
I'm very conflicted on this. The game seems brilliant and I imagine I'll enjoy it a ton, however I truly wonder why they're aiming this at a younger audience (aka kids). For a franchise with plenty of gore nudity and violence, what are Platinum hoping to achieve by getting young'ns invested in it?
@@KelvinMMoore69 kids grow up yes, but It still confuses me on why they still chose bayonetta of all franchises to go completely cutesy, I love the idea honestly but imagine how this looks to unknowing parents when they see the cute storybook game followed up by seductive witch torturing angels! 😂
this is the only bayonetta game that looked visually appealing with its own unique charm and art, as opposed to the typical over the top anime crap, so it's sad to see the game kind of fizzles out
I would have a great time with this- I played the demo and am in love with it. The not so hard gameplay is right up my alley, since my brain can somehow beat Hollow knight without problem but if you add a 3d environment to the high-action I get killed almost right off... It happens every time 😅.
This is an ORIGIN game bro. It’s supposed to tell the story about her past and what happened with her mom etc. She was younger then so no shit she’s a kid in this.
Control both characters with left and right joycons is more challenging than the game itself sometime ... Love the art direction and story telling but gameplay can be improved. I wouldnt mind switching characters mechanic (like FF7 remake)
you can hold cheshire and leave that mode anytime in the game there is something called hug mode where cheshire bcomes a plushie again and you dont have to control him
I heard a lot of "for kids" in this review and I think people need to stop with that thinking. It's a game for anyone that wants to play it and that should be it.
I honestly can't imagine a h&s game in all of history that is better than Bayonetta 3, and even though Origins is a totally different style, I wouldn't miss anything that comes out about Bayonetta
The game is great. It’s fun… story is amazing … voice acting is great…. Play games for fun like we use to back in the day and stop nit picking stupid shit
Yeaaaah. I do agree with the "who exactly is Bayonetta Origins for" argument. Like sure, she showed up in Smash, but turning a dominatrix witch into a child and having her star as an entry point is a bit... strange. And people will say "they're appealing to casual audiences". NOPE. I've seen the marketing. It seems like they're trying to hit the younger audience. Casual people might play it SURE, but there's always a specific age group they're trying to reach. Not a fan of the pet demon stuff and the witch stars either. Would've been fine if they did a new character entirely and laid off the imagery. Or if you do want to make this a Rated M game, lean on the stuff you couldn't get away with Okami. If I sound uptight I'm not. I'm fine with Bayonetta as its own franchise, but Kamiya has to be out of his MIND if he thinks he can branch out like this.
They didn’t turn her into a child out of nowhere, Bayonetta’s childhood has always been an extremely important part of her character. Also the series takes a lot of inspiration from classic European fairy tales, especially Alice in Wonderland. So making a prequel about Bayonetta’s childhood that leans fully into a pre-established aesthetic makes perfect sense. That’s probably the reason Kamiya wanted to make it for so long, he wanted to make a game that fleshes out an aspect of the series that was only ever shown in stilted cutscenes.
Okay I'm very confused. Gamexplain said that the first half is boring but the second half is good. NintendoLife says that the first half is top-notch but the latter half is tiresome. So what the crap?
Not sure why this review assumes that this game is “for kids”. It’s Teen (13+) rated. And it’s less challenging and more painterly than the proper series. But those aspects don’t mean that this game was made for children. Being accessible by all ages doesn’t mean “made for kids”.
Yes it is. Not every game needs to be long asf Jesus Christ. This is way better then some bloated ass 30-100 hour long game with hella filler to pad out the length
@@hatchell18 Well not every game needs to be priced that high at $60 for a game you can beat in less than a day right Listen I like the Bayonetta series but after hearing how casual and cozy/safe the gameplay combat and puzzles is I just couldn't bring myself to pay for it at full. The game is visually appealing ofcourse and I like the metroidvania approach. But Ill definitely check on it sometime when it goes on sale.
@@Lu.-@Lu.- The plot was actively bad and infuriating at every possible turn. Jeanne's missions were boring and pointless. The game has some rough edges and was definietly being held back by the switch. I liked the combat mechanics and demon summoning but I felt that it was shifting the focus from Bayonetta herself. idk just my opinion.
I have to be honest, after unlocking at the time "teaser" as an unlockable extra chapter within Bayonetta 3. I felt mixed feelings. Sure it is neat to try it out. But then, it does not feel earned. Aside from the price point. I am going to pass on this game. With Bayonetta 3 it was full price, but felt incomplete. Seeing this extra chapter also released at full price. I just do not know how to respond. If it was the plan all along to make this a separate game. I really wish that Platinum announced it ahead of time. Even though Bayonetta 3s development went through an obstacle course. I honestly feel burnt out as to what Bayonetta 3 tried to do: cram everything As an origin tale, it is neat to explore. But I do not have plans to buy this. Although its visuals, and art style look amazing. I'm just not feeling the vibe of this game at al
I didn't have much fun with this title. It felt like i played this a million times before. However nintendolife reviews are usually completely bonkers, and best ignored.
Nintendo actually sucks these days lmao. The slow trickle of barely enjoyable games between the occasional smash hit. All they have going for them is their console exclusives…. Not enough…
they made it sound like the later stages has to be harder, but I enjoy a game where I can always pick it up no matter when and how rusty I'm in and feeling i'm making progress. the game journalist should stop the "the game is too easy and no harder levels". It is not healthy and only encouraging boring and souls like games that is to me, a very very lazy way for a game to be built.
My opinion with the audience isn't that it's for children, (considering that it's rated-T and if it's driving you to the older games which are rated-M that'd be dumb marketing) but to the growing casual but mostly female audience. Like it or not girls weren't inundated with video games like boys were to find original Bayonetta all that approachable and a lower difficulty may make wanting to approach it more appealing, while making them better at more difficult games. I think these are good steps to turn everyone into Gamers who crave a challenge.
I honestly haven't even played Bayonetta 3 because the first 2 let me down so hard. The difficulty in the first 2 feels artificial, not based on skill. I didn't feel the same rush from the more difficult modes that I got from games like Hollow Knight which constantly reward mastering each newly introduced mechanic. I love difficult games when they aren't just hard for the sake of giving people bragging rights, but I also love creative games that have heart and do things differently. I'm not sure if I'll ever play Bayonetta 3, but I will definitely be picking this up.
You've got to be kidding :D the first bayonetta is really tough to master and requires a really high skill level and usage of all its simple mechanics at once. Parry, dodge offset, panther offset, taunt offset, crow offset, finisher moves, torture attacks, dodging and bat within. It's a high skilled game. If you're trying to button mash on the higher difficulties it would seem artificially hard because you haven't dived deep into its mechanics. I agree about bayonetta 2 tho - enemies attack off screen there, in 3 as well.
Too expensive for”only” 10ish hours? That’s better then a 100 hour game like ac Valhalla which is bloated and long for the sake of being long. I’ll take a shorter game that’s well made over a long game that’s overly bloated anyday of the week. Not every game needs to be 30 plus hours bro. And there’s thousands of amazing games that are 10-12 hours long literally every other bayonetta game, the resident resident evil games etc.
Every other game in the series is around 8-12 hours. Every resident evil game can be beaten in less then 3 hours. There’s thousands of games that are amazing and worth the money that are only around 10 hours. That’s way better then a game that’s super long but a bloated mess. Not every game needs to be long asf dude. A short game can still be worth the money. What would you rather play or have? A very good and well paced 10 hour game? Or a 30-100 hour game with a lot of padding and boring filler to artificially inflate the game Length?
@@hatchell18 The same argument you're making can be said in reverse, and there are plenty of 15e games that can last beyond 50 hrs packed with content. Your money is yours mate, I personally wouldn't spend 60e on a game that lasts 10 hours. The reason I commented was because I paused the vid to download and play the demo which was one hour of me scrolling through a book and then came back to see it's 10 hours long. Edit to say that idk what RE game you're playing that can be beaten in 3 hours, on someones first playthrough, who isn't intentionally speedrunning. Elden Ring can be beaten in 49 minutes, doesn't mean its a 49 minute game lol
I would be happier with this game if it were a traditional Bayonetta, only with the innovation of controlling an inexperienced Cereza without Bayonetta's devastating powers. Without innovating so much, keeping more the usual Hack n Slach style focusing only on spells. 😑
