BBC First 2000 news broadcast at 01.00 on 1 Jan 2000 

When he said, "It's Saturday, January the 1st, the year 2000", I got chills down my back.

"It's Saturday, January the 1st, the Year 2000" that sounds soo fucking futuristic, and it was 14 years ago

What an incredible sense of optimism and hope for the future there was in 2000.

I turned 15 in August 2000... Remember watching this and the massive sense of hope and optimism there was at the time (almost 19 years ago!) - sad how things have gone since...

Is it bad I'm obsessed with this year for unexplainable reasons?

Makes me feel old reading lots of people saying born in 1998 and at least was alive to see it. I was 14 in 2000 and remember all the hype vividly. I felt like eveything would be different somehow.

I turned 18 in October 1999 and at the turn of the new millennium fireworks we’re going off and it was unforgettable for me.

Was ten years old in y2k. Remember pretty much everything being relatively all rosey and optimistic, then 9/11 came, and then it all very quickly turned into anger and fear.

Seriously? THAT'S how the BBC celebrated the New Millennium, by etching "2000" on a PEBBLE?

This is probably the only millennium people have and will celebrate now thinking about it. I kinda wish I was there to witness it.

I was born in 1984 and it was a real privilege to have lived through the 90s. The turning of the century was also great to witness. Such a special time period, unlike the dystopia we now live in.

Born in June 1986. Wow I remember 2000 beginning with a big party with my family. This video shows a real moment of history.

Born in October '92, I very vaguely remember this. I definitely remember all the worrying about the Millennium Bug though!

MAN I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE YEAR 2000.

At midnight my friends and I along with I reckon another 500 people were on top of Glastonbury Tor in Somerset. The fireworks in all directions as far as the eye could see lasted almost half an hour. It was amazing, the inside of the tower seemed like a nightclub with people dancing and playing instruments. Happy memories.

They are forgetting that there was no year 0 so new millennium really began on 1st Jan 2001

Nice to know that the studio they did this in will be kept, Studio TC1 at the BBC Television Centre. Apart from Studio 1,2,3, all the others are being demolished. Just think of the key events those studios have seen in television and history, am only glad Studio 1 is being kept.

The year 2000 was different from the years that would follow it since, apparently because the 21st was so new and just beginning

This was an amazing time and a privilege to have experienced. We were in Parliament Square near Westminster Bridge on the wall nest to building. It was sensational. The crowds roared, whistles were being blown, some guy did a strip on top of a Telephone booth! the atmosphere was electric and no troubles. We rolled out a sign wishing people in Halifax UK a Happy New Year. Toilets were scarce but we used incontinence sheaths & urine collectors! Honestly. Felt horrid to use. Stayed till 2.30 am.

I spent New Year's Eve 1999/2000 with my then-girlfriend at a friend's place on Long Island, New York. We watched ABC's "ABC 2000" broadcast, and I'll never forget Dick Clark and Peter Jennings describing the arrival of a new millennium in New York City.

I remember when it turned into the year 2000. I was at some party on a PlayStation and then I watched the fireworks go off. After about half an hour I came home and played with my wooden train set (I was only about 8, lol).

The funny thing about all this was that the new (third) millennium didn't actually begin until 2001. The year 2000 was the final year of the second millennium. The celebrations were a year early! I remember the mathematicians going mad about it at the time.

The 2000 Today Program was broadcasted by various televisions statios arround world. In Brazil, Rede Record(actually called by Record TV) broadcasted this program

2000 is a strange year because it's futuristic yet historic at the same time... we look back and see things that are old from this time period by today's standards. It was still the 20th Century and still very much like it. I was only 5, as in turning 5, in 2000 so it was the second year, after 1999, in which my memories begin to form. But 2001 was when I began to remember; 2001 the beginning of the 21st Century.
