I'm a student and I always buy things like rice, sugar, cosmetics, soap, washing powder etc... In bulk beginning of the year then every month I just put aside enough money for fruit, veggies and meat. That has helped me reduce my monthly grocery money. I also cook enough food for 2 to 3 days.
Informative. What I do is, I budget monthly for groceries and then divide that amount into a weekly budget. I then buy whatever I need for the week every Sunday afternoon, making sure that it is within the budget. Meal planning also helps coz then I go and get the ingredients for the specific 2 meals that I will make ( I cook on Sunday and Wednesday). The weekly shopping also helps coz I'm able to buy fresh fruits and veggies and thereby avoid having these items spoiling and getting wasted. This has really helped me manage my grocery budget. Before I used to buy all useless stuff, thinking I'm a chef and ended up having to throw away. I also avoid pre-packed foods, I mean why buy chopped spinach when I can chop it in minutes.
Changes I made in 2021: - This year I deleted Uber eats and Mr delivery apps. - I go to the mall full. - I go to pick n pay and checkers catalogue online to see which shop has the specials that are in line with what I need. - I have a shopping list and stick to it. - I budget and carry cash to enable me to stick to the budget. - I cook everyday or every 2 days.
My husband and I started shopping at Shoprite two months back now. We have been saving quite a significant amount, about R700 from our monthly grocery budget which we have started allocating to something else. We drive quite a distance to find the nearest Shoprite, but we still save so...
Yeah Shoprite has amazing prices for groceries. switched to it a month ago. Unbelievable what you can find there at lower prices, needs a getting used to still I guess.
FEARLESS Same mntase. Listen, last week I had breakfast date just before I went grocery shopping. Ask me why my grocery was R2000 less?? Sometimes we eat through the trolley if that even makes sense.
@@FinancialBunny yes, and in that way I'm able to put some money towards my savings. And for someone like me who enjoys saving, I dont even take note of the little sacrifices I have to make each month so to achieve my financial goal.
I'm so much in my feels because I actually follow all that Nicolette is talking about in this video❤️😂💃🏽especially the one of drawing up a precise grocery list with budgets and not shopping for everything in your list in one shop.
I hate spoiling, wasting food and then having to throw it all away as i am aware that there is people out there who go hungry. Same goes for buying items that we dont really eat or eat once in a while. Chomi (wife) and I buy what we eat and now that we going to use in some instances things like salads or even Vegetables we buy in some quantities as with the heat they spoil quickly. When it comes to cooking food, we cook in small sizes for our stomachs as some food the next day they not fresh or do not taste the same. I would rather cook some meals daily than them having to sleep in the fridge for a day or 2 then by that time the appetite is not there to consume them. Have really trained Chomi (Wife) that we don't waste food and even take away we buy what we enjoy and make sure that it gets finished. Budget wise, we stick to it and don't buy what we don't need or we would buy that maybe specific item for that meal.
Grocery shopping when you’re hungry is indeed a TRAP Such a financial leak We learnt to write a list because you over buy stuff OR forget stuff which means, you must go shop AGAIN! Thank you for this video, very insightful #TheMlangenis 🌻
Thank you Nicolette! This video is coming at such a good time especially as the festive season is around the corner. We have to be real conscious of our spending cause there is just something about the end of the year that causes cards to be swiped with less caution. Budgeting is key. Thank you 🤗
Good to know im not the only one that struggles with basic saving ideas such as the one you just discussed. I'm trying out different ways to cut on things like unnecessary groceries. I stock up one month. And put that money to use to say pay debt or buy cash something I wanted the next month, since I've closed all my clothing accounts.
Awesome video. i agree with you on the daily cooking of a chef. i loved your video on thinking ourself poor. It might be cheaper to actually have them around!!! love the content
You very wise yazi, I used to do that I stopped after I listened to David Ramsey’s daughter Rachel Cruze.I heard about David Ramsey from one of your videos.Thank you so much cc💖💖💋💋🙏🏻🙏🏻
I remember there was a place in the East Rand , that did meal preps everyday and deliver them to you, I think they charged R1500 per month ... can't remember the name
A family of 6 and food we cook everyday, thru the week am looking at sale items buy in bulk to last for about 2 months, when i lived alone i didnt eat much , wasnt at home a lot of times so take aways become the thing, spending unnecessarily, now i plan , but food is expensive guys in SA
I always write a list of things I need, however I do buy everything on the list and what ever else I start feeling like..the list helps me to not forget the important things but I buy more than I need
All I wanna do is hug and kiss you right now 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 You such an amazing person hle 😍😍 and I love you so much, thank you for always being very helpful. May God bless you highly and abundantly ❤🙂❤
I don’t want to be a lady 😂. I cook once or twice a week and it’s a lot of food that I keep it in lunch boxes and take some to work. I don’t mind carrying the same food to work everyday 😂
I do that too. I cook a whole lot of food. Save it ko Tupperware. Carry it for lunch, have it for dinner. Angina stress about eating the same thing for 3+ days.
Great topic, from what I gather food is the third most expense in one`s life after accommodation and Transport. Thus I meal prep by cooking once or twice a week. I buy potatoes, butternut, beetroot, carrots, morogo and i would cook enough of them to last me 3-4 days, I would then put them in the fridge and whenever i want to eat i disk out from these. It save me time and money. For the protein i can maybe boil or fry an egg, Tune, or cook meat, chicken liver, chicken hearts (they are crunchy) simple things which don`t take much time to prepare. Its a great strategy since am lazy to cook and I stay alone. Eish, as for entertainment i still am trying to manage that as alcohol is a bit expensive here in Botswana. But I will have to work on budgeting for entertainment.
I've had to uninstall fast food apps from my phone so I don't always get tempted to just order takeaways, that helps me think twice because to order I have to use a browser to go to the website and place the order, that inconvenience helps me only order when I have to unlike just seeing the app on my phone all the time. The other thing I've had to do was deal with the "full fridge" syndrome, my fridge can only have two items but if it's only the things I need then I'm happy, unlike having the fulfillment of seeing a full fridge when you'll throw away half the things after some days
Hi Nicolette, thank you this good video, please kindly explain the concept of refinancing loans, is it advisable with certain loans only or for a certain periods? please please help.
I usually get mostly VAT free items like fruit and vegetables, one of the cheapest loaves of breads, some frozen vegetables for when fresh vegetables run out, some tinned stuff like tuna for when I don’t wanna cook and a couple of packs of chicken. If I still have stuff left over from the last month I get extra detergents, soap, deodorant, etc. I do order food via apps sometimes because I have a few favorite restaurants that I like but I try to keep that to a minimum. So far this has been working for me, I want to meal prep too so I can save on electricity and it’s just easier to not cool everyday but the problem with this is when I try to cook for more than one day I end up eating extra lol I’m a bit lucky because my late mom was very frugal and she was a really good cook so I learnt a lot from her about how to shop and cook, and other stuff like turning the stove off when the food is almost cooked and letting the heat carry on cooking it, buying toiletries and detergents on special and in bulk, etc :)
The only thing I really spend lots of money is cashew nuts because I really like them and I’m fine with this because they’re healthy too and I don’t really eat chips or chocolates
I have a family, we cook 3 times a week. Normally we’d cook today for today and tomorrow then cook on the third day again. Takeaways we don’t love a lot instead we set apart spare money for lunch at work sometimes
I get this a lot and I’m confused by what you really want out the video. The process is the same when buying with a loan-it’s just that you have the money
@@FinancialBunny oh ok can you please explain the process. Do I have to inform my bank etc, at which point do I pay seller, before or after the deed is in my name. It's confusing for us first time buyer's. It's my first property, so I want to understand the process better to avoid being scammed.
@@ramoshabaramoshaba9561 you do it through a lawyer, but after hubby and I got a bad experience of where the lawyer got disbarred while holding our money before finishing the transfer and the money being tied into their assets I'd say buy through the bank as though you're taking a home loan since they have good legal representation and then after a month or 2 after the deed transfers are done, settle the account with the bank, it will still work out less coz you won't be paying all the interest but the principal amount. I'm not very well informed to know if it's a good move but we felt had we done this we wouldn't have lost our money. Plus via the bank you know they will send a property evaluator to check if the house is really worth that and also do elecrical checks as well...
The simple solution to the entire grocery chat is meal prep. If you can take an hour out of 2 days out of your week to plan your meals, you'll be less likely to overspend on food.
The best food is the food you cook yourself because you can control what goes into your body. Eating take aways regularly becomes boring eventually. I have to admit that I like your idea of ordering from a chef to deliver meals because it saves time and electricity and chefs cook better food than fast food restaurants
My mom taught me some meal preparation tricks. And now, I have a housemate who preps on a Sunday for the whole week, or a few days of the week and reheats her meals when she's ready to eat.
My dishes pile up every time I cook, my kitchen never looks empty on the counter because it's too busy. I'm uninspired to want to cook everyday and then do the dishes.
I resorted to clearing out my dishes and only keeping 2 sets of everything that forces me clean my dishes everyday cos I run outta dishes after breakfast
I keep a stabdard shopping list in my google keep app. I tick off what i have at home and untick what I need. I have tought myself fo first buy what is on my list first before freelancing.
No but this is a serious problem.. wish you could go further into the chef option because I live alone and I just can’t.. even if I cook in bulk the days after I just don’t want it.. 😒 I’m in UberEats-rehab andazi 😩
Thank you Sis for a funny and educational vid. Before pay day, I collect newspaper that advert all the food specials starting from Shoprite to Boxer and make a list of where to buy what and I save so much money on this even though it takes time. Anyway, Sis awuna project izoba seBhayi? Haibo ndifuna ukumamela in person ☺☺☺☺
@@doitwithlesa8730 no Lesa, what I do I go to a mall, in that way I get most of the shops in one place, time, yeah it does waste it, that why I make sure I don't have other places to go to.
@@mbalimvelase5665 omg. May ask what language this is? I'm Kenyan. We speak swahili and I understood what you meant. I also noticed sometimes when I watch South African shows where they mix english and their mother tongue I can understand some words too.
I live in russia and the country is inexpensive for a south african, buying take aways is cheaper than anything else, when i come back to SA I get a culture and economic shock as to how expensive food and take aways are. They financially cripple me
@@pearln2308 In eastern Europe and Asia our currency bares great weight but we cant capitalize on investing because they are non inclusive to heir economies.Reasonable place to study in
I can relate. I lived in Russia for 7 years, and the fresh vegetables and fruits are so cheap. All you have to do is go to the Market ( рынок), buy yourself the most organic veggies you can find at a very cheap price.
Does this take away once a week exclude the breakfast and lunch at work? I don't get it, I feel like nothing will work for me... coz otherwise this is several take-outs in a day. Feel like crying and giving up,lol
Try the French and Italian “easy living” lifestyle, almost everything they eat is homemade… and they enjoy home eating rather than eating out and don’t live on takeaways…. It’s amazing how keeping yourself alive by eating can cost a whole lot of money
Financial Bunny. Am a student. Surviving on a student budget. I can sustain myself on R1000. I have a big appetite. So the way which I learned to shop is that I spend money on food weekly. 1. I am passionate about cooking even though I don't have a labourer's money. With that being said. I plan my weekly food plan ahead. For example the saturday before the next week. 2. Plan involves finding new recipes to cook at least two or three for four weeks. This recipes are only for dinner. I don't personally believe in lunch. 3. Once I have the above ingredients of the recipes to my shopping list am good to go shopping. Also when I get to the shops I try and buy only fresh and organic foods. Comparing prices of Food lovers market and pick n pay can be a challenge. At the end it is a rewarding one when you realized you spent the least amount of money on groceries. 4. My shopping list comprises of majority of the basic things and a minority of the recipes I have to buy for. Basics are my toiletries, breakfast meals and what my Mother usually cooks almost daily back home which is pap. The great thing about it is less costly because there is no VAT on it and you can pair it up with most meat or dairy products. Holding everything constant in my life I can spend money on food this month and be able to save cash on my next grocery list because I still have the stuff I bought from last month with me. So this has helped me to have cash in my account at the end of the month excluding my other living costs.
Points to remember: make a list before shopping... Eat before shopping... Avoid shops where I cannot discipline myself. Avoid a lot of fresh foods that spoil easily.
