Good video Bill - every word totally true. I was sold a level wind multiplier by a Dorset tackle shop when looking for a new rod, and it took me some time to realise that it was a big mistake. I just can't get the hang of casting with a mutliplier anyway! And as you said, one of the advantages of fixed sppol reels is having interchangable spools. Bill, I heard something very true recently, a reel just stores line. Totally agree with what you say, i have recommended Vigor silk 70s to a lot of beginners as they are cheap. You don't need to spend a lot to start out, and you don't need to spend hundreds either. Penn Surfblasters are very popular on the south coast, me I prefer Penn Battles, but it's horses for courses. Hear, hear to your shout out for casting lessons, best money you could spend.

Good Morning Bill, and a very happy Bank Holiday weekend to you and your family, whom I hope are all well and safe. Thanks for the video, which I enoyed greatly. I have not been beach fishing yet, though I do have a rod, reel and some tackle, so I am all set to do so when we are allowed to live our life again. I have a Penn Rampage 14' rod and a Penn Affinity II reel, which I hope are up to the task, though I do hope to get a multiplier at some point and learn how to pendulum cast. Anyway, thanks again for the upload, and best wishes as always from Surrey. P.S, hope to see you at The Big One in Farnborough, if it ever gets put on this year. 😀

Good advice. The older Shimnao Aerlex (the blue one) is a decent, rugged starter fixed spool that does a good job on the beach. They can be picked up used for not much money.

Always been a fixed spool person. I came from fly fishing and coarse, to sea. Early days, my mates were achieving a lot longer casts with multipliers, and laughing at me. Then the birds nests appeared, and I still carried on fishing. Then the weed knots stopped them - not me, lost gear and fish in the rocks! Then I learnt how to cast properly, then bought longer rods - than the 12ft I had, braid on the spools, outcast them! Then I realised technique, long casts are not always needed! Start short, then see what the results are.... They now say to me - you will catch a fish in a car park puddle!!! But they will not change!!!! Hey ho, if you're not interested in learning, so be it!

Fixed Spool all day. I aim to be on fish close. Been using my Sonik Carp Reels for 5 years on the beach and have been blinding. Always clean down after every session. Cost £100 each and well worth it. Spare spools ready loaded. effortless realistic casting distance and brilliant line lay with quick retrieve. Have had 60lb plus Cats on em. Plus Rays, dogs, huss, from the shore. boom!
