Here i take a look at two centrepin reels. One i have had for a few years, the other is a new model. Both cost less than £40 and are functional and practical. I love using centrepins for trotting and close range work and feel that every angler could benefit from owning one.

You don't need a tackle shed. or a garage, or put up totally unrelated videos to keep your subscriber figures up, we'll still follow you Bill, because unlike some fishing channels on here, you do it to help people improve on their game, unlike some others who chase the cash at every opportunity! All the best to you and your family Bill

I have a center pin similar to the silver one you have and I use it for carp fishing in the margins on local carp puddles I have mine loaded heavy with 10lb mono and pair it with a 1.75TC 11ft Avon barbel rod, great combo for playing large carp and no need for buzzers the ratchet on it sounds like an old football rattle ! I have a TF gear chair with a rod rest connector thingy and side tray, 36" Landing net and beanie mat, basic tackle for either float fishing lift method or inline lead, loaf of sliced bread, tin of sweet corn, flask of coffee, pack of biscuits and some sarnies is all I need for a session on the bank. I cant wait for this lock down to be finished so I can get fishing again, Thanks for posting Bill always a pleasure stay safe.

Hi Bill, I enjoy using a centrepin, I have a cheaper model and a more expensive model, but I prefer the noisier and stiffer ratchet on the cheaper one for when I am ledgering for barbel. Myself and my fishing partner Big AJ know an angler who only fishes with a centrepin on a club stretch of river just down from where you have fished in a few of your videos. Nice work another great video.

Hi Bill, great video, I was bought up on a pin and still prefer them today for close fishing, nothing better. I bought one of the 4 inch new pins, really well made and not expensive, but, for me they spin too freely! And in the wind they are a bugger. I have an old intrepid match, two actually, 3 1/2 inch and they work really well they are full framed and are much better in the wind. But the very best in my opinion the best is my rapidex, just a joy to use and was a bargain ebay at £25 happy days. The intrepid matches were both under a tenner. Me old fashioned, how you say.... Remember the days, on the Thames a Dawsons elaine, centre pin, crow quill float and 3lb line...goer roach, oh apart from the rod and the river that's me today, who are you calling old fashioned.... Stay well Bill, all the best from Brittany, Mick.

If you had enough depth close in then a "pin" was a superb trotting reel. For me the problem with a lot of designs was the reel seat was too close to the reel so you couldn't get your fingers in between which was uncomfortable but I had a 5.1/2" handle-less version of the Leeds model years ago that had plenty of room Being handle-less wasn't a problem as you just stuck your finger in one of the holes to wind in. I can't remember the name of the Author but I read an article back then suggesting it was easier to control if you had the line coming off the top instead of the bottom (which meant winding in the "wrong" way) but I found it easier to thumb the rim and used it set up that way for years. My trotting days are over now so I sold it but I remember weighing in 74 lbs of chub from the Newark Dyke.

Hi Bill, I'm glad to see you are keeping safe and well. I've bought many centre pins over the years from £30 - £250 And to be honest some of the modern cheap reels are as good a quality as some of more expensive older reels I purchased. Like yourself I tend to keep the narrow drums for trotting for roach, chub ect and the wider drums for carp, tench and barbel, I have to agree with you about the rachets, I think I've got one that's acceptable all the rest are unbelievably noisy. For me I've not missed the fishing too much, and if it wasn't for the nice weather we have had it would have just seemed like a "Good old closed season" apart from not being able to sea fish or trout fish, but I am like most others enjoying the anticipation of being able to get out again, hopefully at the start of the season, still my tackle hasn't been so clean and organised in years lol. Take care Bill, see you on the bank soon.

Thanks for sharing the info on your pins Bill nothing better in my opinion for catching those ealry season tench in the margins. This lack of fishing although frustrating just feels like the old close season when 'the management' would get those annoying job lists out and expect them done before the glorious16th.

Nice reel that and your right keep the wide one for bigger fish and the narrow one for trotting. All you need now is a closed face reel for those days when it’s to windy or raining to use a centrepin. I have two centre exactly like you and a managed to get an old Abu 506 closed face with 4lb on. Happy days to come hope your right about fishing again will be great.

Centrepins are underrated for pike fishing. Trotting a deadbait down river and wobbling/twitching it back. A big fish can put plenty of leverage on the mechanism, so beefier reels are best.
@petemason57
@petemason57 4 года назад
The use of a center pin reel for fishing is a dying art. Before commercials trotting a stick float down a river or stream was the method of the day. Now it's all legering and buzzers.
@stevewilliams5428
@stevewilliams5428 4 года назад
I use a pin on commercials for margin fishing. Free line a large prawn down the side, set the ratchet(bigger than a mouse shit) and sit back. That way I can hear a bite and float fish at the same time.

Hi i use pole rigs on the rod and pin when fishing close in and they are an excellent choice as there is no casting and bite detection is superb Bill

You are right, Bill. There are good reels available for not much money. I spent a little bit more on a TF Gear pin. The quality is very good for the money except for the fragile ratchet spring - it's a poor design and I am on my third one already. Your NGT is probably better. I also got a used Okuma Aventa a few years back for £70. This is in another league - I can't fault it. You may want to give Berkley Fireline Crystal a try. It's a coated braid - thinner than the equivalent BS mono and floats well. You can use 8lb BS for roach AND barbel because it is so fine (lighter hooklength for roach, obviously). A bit stiff when new but softens up after a few hours use.
@easyfishing1936
@easyfishing1936 4 года назад
Hi well i have used Fireline a lot but have switched to nanoline and never fish it straight through and these days i am finding i use Fluorocarbon hooklengths more and more Bill

I have a brass centerpin reel if you were to place it on a packet of Anadin extra it wouldn't exceed the size of the packet . it's small but built like a tank and still works perfectly as for when it was made .. late 1940's or pre WW2 ..as for who made no name visable .

Hello bill please can I have some tips on fishing the new cut next to priory country park in Bedford, thanks in advance
@easyfishing1936
@easyfishing1936 4 года назад
Hi well i used too live 500 yards from the New Cut and fished it a lot. Now you have to join the Syndicate to fish it and its not too expensive and you get the big lake, fingers lake and tesco's lake as well! to fish the cut use something like an avon rod and fish the link ledger letting the bait roll under cover using hard pellets or meat. Strong_ish tackle as there are some good barbel and chub in there. Try setting up away from the water to keep disturbance down and if possible introduce some bait before you start fishing and let the fish find it and start feeding confidently before casting in. If you fish the float there are a couple of swims for this and fishing at dawn or dusk can produce some good fish including roach in excess of 2 lbs, chub to over 6 lbs and i've had barbel to over 6 lbs in the past but could be a lot bigger now as i have not fished it for 15 years. Hope this helps Bill ps if the cut colours up after heavy rain fish tesco's lake and i have had big bags of tench in the winter after it colours up.

Hello! What it is the advantage of using this type of reel instead of a spinning one? I am fishing for everything, from roach to pike, so i use spinning gear for 90% of the time. I have a casting rod too, but i use it only for the perch in the canal, or near the water constructions. I wish you a nice day and to be safe. Eugen.
@easyfishing1936
@easyfishing1936 4 года назад
Hi well first these are not for casting but for superb control when running a float down a river, or close in work on canals and still waters. You can use them for any close in work float or ledger, or even lighter boat fishing at sea. Also when playing bigger fish there is no clutch so its direct and you use a finger/thumb as a brake and gives you total control but they do take some getting used too but look at my back catalogue and you will see me using them for both small and big fish Bill
