In this video, I’m taking a look at the Braun BT3040 beard trimmer.
This beard trimmer is an Amazon Choice Recommendation, ranking at #41 for the category of beard and mustache trimmers. It also holds a respectable 3.8 out of 5-star rating.
Now, I thought it would be especially valuable if I not only reviewed the Braun BT3040 beard trimmer, but also compared it to the Philips Norelco Series 5100. These 2 beard trimming devices have very similar features, and it’s likely you’d be choosing between the two for your beard trimming needs.
The Braun Beard Trimmer BT3040 utilizes a short and long beard comb that work in tandem with a precision dial.
The Philips Series 5100 beard trimmer includes 3 beard and hair combs that work in combination with a built-in zoom wheel.
I’ve read that some people have had an issue with the Braun BT3040 combs sliding out of position and accidentally pushing the cutting length dial to an undesired beard trim setting. While I didn’t experience this during my beard trim, it’s something to watch out for.
The Braun BT3040 beard trimmer incorporates 39 length settings, ranging from 1mm to 20mm, with 0.5mm increments.
The Philips Norelco Series 5100 is capable of cutting at 34 different length settings, from 0.4mm to 13mm.
The Braun BT3040 beard trimmer features two AAA nickel metal hydride re-chargeable batteries that required 8 hours of charge time for 60 minutes of use.
The Philips Norelco Series 5100 beard trimmer uses a Lithium Ion Battery and requires only 1 hour of charge time for 70 minutes of use.
Note that both trimmers can also be used plugged-in for continuous use.
As you’ll hear me say in the video, I found that the Braun BT3040 beard trimmer’s power dulled a bit as I worked my way through the beard trim.
In listening to the hum of these devices side by side, it’s clear that the Philips Norelco Series 5100 beard trimmer is the stronger contender power-wise.
The Braun BT3040 and the Philips Series 5100 beard trimmer, along with their attachments, are both fully washable. However, these trimmers can only be used in dry conditions and should not be used while bathing or in the shower.
The Braun BT3040 beard trimmer requires occasional oiling to maintain the blades, while no oiling is needed for the Philips Norelco Series 5100.
Currently, the Philips Norelco Series 5100 trimmer sells on Amazon for around $44.99, while you’ll find the Braun Beard Trimmer BT3040 $10 cheaper at $34.99.
For this beard trim, I shorten up the sides of my beard, leaving a longer goatee and mustache. I trim under the neck line and around the face to get some nice crisp lines. I also work in some dimension by using just a few of the many settings available on these two beard trimming devices.
These are two great beard trimmers, but there is a clear winner.

You keep banging out great reviews man! Quick question for you, how close does the Norelco 5100 cut without any guard on it? The reason I ask is because I bald out my head weekly, and cant seem to find anything that cuts as good as my 10 year old Remington BHT600 even though I believe they are only at .05 mm without a guard!

Hi, Jeremy. Thanks so much for the support and positive feedback! I really appreciate it! To your question, the Philips Norelco Series 5100 will cut as close as 0.4mm (1/64") without a guard. However, it may be difficult to tell the difference between trimming at 0.5mm vs 0.4mm since they are so close. If trying to get close to the skin, without using a razor, you might be interested in a shaver like the Braun Series 9. It's a pricier device, but many men have found this to work well when looking to smooth out their head. Hope this helps! Hi, Haider. In my opinion, the Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 (amzn.to/2TkEiIpis) is a great trimmer and one that I continue to recommend. For it's price and what you get out of it, I have found it to be at the top of the beard trimmers I have reviewed to-date. If you haven't already, I recommend taking a look at my video for the Multigroom 7000 seen here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eFn0Si1Bmyc.html. However, if you're looking for a beard trimmer that has less attachments and smaller increment settings that are built into the device, which can go from 0.4mm up to 20mm (Beard Trimmer 5500), then I would recommend taking a look at my video on the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 5500 vs Series 5100 seen here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aSEF_AOenW8.html. Both these trimmers are almost identical in the features, however, the 5500 is the latest version in the 5000 series. For beard trimming, I still recommend the Multigroom 7000. Of the trimmers I have reviewed to-date, it is still one of the better performers on the beard and has received many positive comments from community members. It also is holding a very positive 4.6 out of 5.0 star review rating on Amazon (amzn.to/2W1yfsg). As you saw in this video, the Multigroom 7000 comes with the pieces needed for creating that crisp, uniform look and depending on the size of your beard, you can interchange the beard and hair guards to trim at longer lengths or get down to that stubble look. Love your in-depth reviews fellow Beardman! I refunded the Braun BT3040. The performance wasn't too great which was ok because I completely oppose Gillette as a company following their virtue signalling commercial that vilified their consumer base. Quick question, is there any chance of reviewing one of those Philips vacuum beard trimmers? In the end, I bought the 7000 multigroom device reviewed on your channel. But I'm also keeping the vacuum trimmer as a potential alternative in the future. Keep up the great work.
