The sound of Bearded woodpeckers drumming on trees is an iconic element of the African bush.
The Bearded woodpecker is one of the largest woodpeckers in Africa. These woodpeckers spend a good chunk of the day on trees, hammering and probing with their beaks until they find a delicious insect. They live in a variety of habitats, from acacia and Brachystegia woodland to riverine forest.
Woodpecker drumming sounds are an interesting element in the soundscape. They are rhythmic rather than melodious but they compliment birdsong nicely and they can be fairly loud. They anchor the sounds of dawn chorus in place with the reflections they cause. These sounds vary across species and even individuals, with a wide variety of patterns, number of repetitions, drumming strength and even preferred trees. It's a very interesting niche of natural sound to explore.
