Sticht, can I hug you, man? You're like the guitar teacher I never had. I learned to improvise on guitar at 45yo (47 now) and Stitch was the single most important influence. The never lost system is basically what got out of the shapes 01 and 02 of the pentatonic. So grateful, bro. 🙏

Wow. This lesson breaks down exactly what I have been trying to figure out for the last year. The whole not playing notes higher than the melody is something I needed to hear for so long. My ears knew it I wasn't always doing it right but my head couldn't figure out its the inconsistency of my picking hand. Awesome tutorial you sir are a gifted teacher, thankyou so much.

This is a breakthrough! I've lamented that so many lessons are rhythm (G-C-D over and over, call it a song) or lead (fun little snippets, but no complete song) when what I want to be able to play is the melody (full song, recognizable as such). So... ear training, find the notes... end up with a childish string of sounds; a bit of fun, but not very satisfying. Try the chords that relate to those notes; you get a hot mess... until now! Find the chords; play them short, without the high end above the melody line... Maybe half the viewers already knew that; but for me... gold! Thank you, Stich! I'm eager to try this...

Stich, i used to be to sing , had a great range, but then medical problems occurred, which ruined my vocal cords. This method will greatly help me to keep playing my beautiful guitar, make her sing instead of me. I recored this song six years ago, & just had a blast doing the vocals. so love you for this lesson.

Ian, I am seventy two years old and have been playing guitar for over fifty years mostly as a single doing guitar harmonica and vocals. I started playing guitar only as a way to accompany myself as a singer. Naturally I started out playing, "cowboy chords" and strumming. That works ok for a song like Proud Mary or something like that but when you get into playing songs like, "Still Crazy After All These Years" by Paul Simon or especially songs by Piano players like Leon Russells "Song For You" it just doesn't work. So over the years I gravitated to arpeggiating chords and playing what I now hear called slash chords as a method of adding a bass line to my playing. Basically just emphasizing the bass notes of whatever chord I might be playing. Then, over time, I began to find that adding just a few lead notes and, "Grace Chords" which I now hear called slash chords really helped to emphasize a vocal line and track the melody. You are teaching a much more sophisticated method of this and although I'm still performing regularly one or two nights a week, I am still always trying to learn how to play guitar. I have been doing a lot of what you are teaching in this lesson and since you are not, as I understand it, primarily a vocalist, you probably have no idea just how important what you are touching upon in this lesson is to someone who performs a single doing vocals and guitar. So for all of those struggling performers out there trying to do a single act with guitar and vocals, Thanks for this. Oh, and incidentally, although this lesson is a bit over the heads of most beginners, a good way for them to begin with this is to simply try and start emphasizing the bass lines in your chords. Again, thanks Ian.

I think you should do a lot of the elements. Keep the right hand moving. Don’t play any strings above the melody. Anything that’s going to conflict. Occasionally just play the melody line if it’s hard to play chords along with the melody. Etc. Plus he’s got a Patreon, you can sent him a little cash. He does a lot of work he’s great

Nice! I happened to be at a farmers market this morning and there was a guitar player there doing chord melody arrangements and he was awesome. He took it one step further by playing very explicit bass lines on the thicker strings while playing the melody on the thin strings. Then I noticed that with his right hand he was employing hybrid picking - he held the pick between his thumb and forefinger as usual and used the pick for the bass lines, while at the same time picking out the melody finger style with his middle, ring, and pinky fingers. By the way Ian - do I spy a brand new Dragon Fruit PRS Silver Sky SE in your rack?

Hey there. So I have been following a lot of teachers on RU-vid for the last few years but never stumbled upon uou until tonight. I really like your style. You seem more geared toward intermediate I’m more late beginner and sometimes just flat beginner with many skills. So you do any lessons on barre chord tips etc. I can play most open chords pretty well but going from open to barre etc I can’t transition smooth. Like C to F I just always have a pause. I like country and Bm always comes up and I can’t get to it. I just can’t seem to memorize the barre shapes like i did the open chords. Yet I bought myself a pretty awesome Taylor and a fishman amp. I need to get this going. Help! Anyhow thanks for your page! I subscribed. -Ryan
