i like the term genre-bender in relation to his musical inclinations and expressions. he's not too concerned with those labels, it doesn't seem. Heck, according to some interviews, he isn't even too concerned with how his art is made. He said if he would've had a piano instead of a guitar, he would've gone that direction more. he's an artist before he is genre-loyal or medium-loyal. Certainly, there is nothing wrong with artists 'staying in their lane', but my point is that Beck doesn't have a lane; he's got a field, and he runs around in that field and finds cool stuff that he then shines up and sells by the roadside. Consummate artist of our time.
@@OfficialTails69 No.. it's called the Beck genre the guy had it right. You cannot put Beck only into alternative, as he is folk, Blues, Rock, soul, R&B he crosses all genres. Do some research you'll find what I'm saying is absolutely true. He Wright's his own book. It's impossible to put a label on him, except for a musical genius. His mind is clear and beautiful and deliberate.
I love how he appreciates East los . I used to see him around circa 2007-2008 ' in my hood. He loved it. He would hang out in taco stands, local parties and mariachi plaza. Beck will be always welcome in Boyle heights forever .
PrivateSchemers1 omg yes I was exactly gonna say the same thing!! lol it came one fuse or MTV. :) god I miss those days. those were the days I was barely becoming a metal head and getting into music.
Beck! Met him around 1990 on Franklin Ave! I lived down the hall...enjoyed hearing the teenager play his guitar. Little did I imagine...Love this video. Beautifully filmed in my L.A. neighborhood! Best wishes!
Homage to Al Jaffee, Mad Magazine artist who came up with the Fold-In concept in 1964 ... joining the images together to reveal a new message. (Al Jaffee is mentioned at the 2:45 mark). Al Jaffee died April 10, 2023, at the age of 102. He holds the Guinness Record for "Longest Career as a Comic Artist" (1942-2022). RIP, Al! And yes, Beck is a genius.
Exactly my friend. Beyonce didn't need that award, she is one the most successful and influential artist in music history by simply keeping up with times and not forgetting why she is adored in the first place. The Grammies made the right choice by giving Beck the award and I know lots of people out there including myself, haven't heard the likes of him. Super creative, lots of substance, vision and incredibly infectious. Loving the music.
Beck is truly a legend and a musical genius. He does not get the recognition that he deserves, and it makes me sad that most of the world has forgotten about him. People have forgotten what real music is, but Beck reminds me that there will always be good music out there.
Probably one of the best musicians of our time. Can play every instrument, every album has had its own sound and the man puts one out about every year. I saw him play a one man show in a fire trap dive in downtown kc with about 500 people in early 90s. There were so many of us he played two shows. A genius and a class act. Blow snot on haters
If this is the 'best musician', this is a very bad time for music, or whatever nowadays passes for it. This is so awful, it has nothing to do with music. I suggest you start listening for some real stuff from the 60's or 70's - there may still be some hope for you.
Beck is an artist in all sense of the word. He single-handedly produced his latest album all on his own and plays multiple instruments. The class he has shown throughout this speaks volumes about his character and doesn't play into social media. Music is subjective, so if you like Kanye, Beyonce or Beck that's great. But the way in which an album is made and what the "artist" does to create it is where this huge separation begins. Beyonce had 16 producers, many contributors and writers. Kanye's own performance on the Grammys was riddled with auto-tune and lets face it: He cannot sing. Do I enjoy his other music? Yes, he's a talented rapper. But he is attempting to venture into territory that is beyond any musical ability he, alone, possesses. I saw Beck a few months ago, for the first time. It was one of my "bucket list" shows. I was blown away. The show was damn perfect, his entire library of music was played. And that voice. For such a small frame he can fill a room. Beck's an artist. And if you can't appreciate it, that's 100% okay. Just don't equate album sales and popularity to being great. That's not what the Album of The Year is. It's an award for musical excellence in many facets from instrumentation, singing and writing. And for that, Beck is a master of his craft.
He's amazing, and his album is fucking incredible. All that nonsense that went down is irrelevant. He has been around a long time, and he should never be sold short, hes the cats pajamas.
apreciate the words you written !!! i also like alot of diferent music styles(and a lot of onehit wonders :D) ........but yeah beyonce defenetly can sing but Beck is a true artist .. i discovered beck in 94 on mtv (looser !like 99,?% of people at that time)when i was still in switzerland..and i was hooked.... 24 years later(!) and he still makes original music (and videos )
@@megapanka, there's something about that religion that definitely makes me feel similar thoughts. I don't even know much about the religion, but it (like 99.9% of religions) just doesn't sit well with me.
As a kid that grew up reading a stack of mad magazines from the late 60s/early 70s, this video concept is close to my heart. Love the Jaffee Easter egg.
Been listening to Beck since the early 2000s, and him winning came as a shock to me. Not because he didn't deserve it, but because the Grammy's suddenly didn't seem purely based on what makes the most cash and what has the biggest sales appeal to the masses. You go, Beck! You fully deserve it, and you're a fantastic musician! :)
Yeah, they gave him a shout-out because of all the nods to Al Jaffee in the video. Don't have the issue anymore, sadly, so I couldn't give you any specifics or anything.
This song is so dark.. makes me laugh when I hear it in a supermarket... This whole video is an example of how people don't pay attention to details when everything seems fine. Like when you hear a catchy up beat song it couldn't possibly be about something so dark.
Congrats, Beck. Your incredible music virtuosity, ability to blend all genres, create thought provoking lyrics, play a bajillion instruments, sample like nobody's business (except Big Audio Dynamite, lol), and compositions are the reasons you earned that Grammy. For those who are actually interested in Beck, please feel free to listen to his seminal album, Odelay. Second best (IMO) is Guerro, which combines West Coast LA with Mexican and Latin influences. LOVE YOU BECK!
Giant hearts for Beck!!! You have been my musical crush since I had "one foot in a grave". One of the most eclectic musical geniuses to place a foot on this earth.
I love Beck, and I'm glad he got to get the Grammy, but I don't see why people are so mad at the thought that some people might rather listen to Beyonce over Beck. They are two totally different styles of music, and obviously some people would prefer tp listen Beyonce's pop music over Beck's alternative stuff. So those of you who are asking," how could Beck win over Beyonce"?, or, "how could people have not heard of Beck before the Grammy's"?... The answer to your questions are:Because people have different taste in music. It's pretty obvious people
I agree, but not just that. Both sides grew up in different times so it's harder for both of them to be compared. People who know Beck also saw Beyonce grow, but most of the people who know Beyonce were maybe 5 years old at the time. I like Beck, but Im not gonna trash over Beyonce either just because I dont listen to her music. Everyone is gonna have a different taste and no one is gonna be happy either way. Its a no win situation
Kevin, because it's a bizarre reverse snobbery. Beyonce's music is throwaway bubble gum trash IMO (I cannot stop people liking it, but as someone who has played musical instruments since the age of 3 I have a good knowledge of the subject). So I can quite easily tell that Beyonce and Kanye are not fit to tie my bootlaces musically, let alone those of Beck. And as for Beyonce's lyrics, dear god a primary school child could do better. I know Kanye can't help being stupid but he can help being rude.
I know someone will say "but it's a matter of opinion". Yes, it is, but some opinions carry greater weight than others, as in any discipline. I wouldn't debate a scientist in his or her field and think that somehow my opinion was of equal value to theirs.
I saw the headline today "Al Jaffee, long time fixture at Mad magazine has passed." In tribute I folded it in and got "Al Jaffee, long assed". I like to think Al woulda wanted that.
. . .*We need more cheery, feel-good tunes like this about too much sun exposure & its lethal ramifications. Thanks, Beck. You're one of my all-time favourite Folkies now. Best wishes.* . . .
I'm just confused of how people don't know who Beck is lol they actually played his stuff for years now on the radio, at least on my Detroit/Canada 89x new rock alternative station
The same way morons didn't know who Missy Elliot was. Missy is the best female hip hop artist of all time and crushes 24/7 ... but just because she's been laying low people act like they don't know. The internet has allowed people to just surround themselves with music they already like and not get any diversity in their play list. At least when the radio was the only game in town, you might have to listen to some songs you hate, but you'd also find new artists you would have never found otherwise.
Jason Plastow Ha yea I know right! and some people were even asking who Paul McCartney was but I was hoping those were just jokes, and yea I do love the music on the radio and the internet because there are still so many artists that I am positive I don't know yet and places like youtube a long with other radio stations can help me discover them :]
I lived in west lake also,. got to respect this little guy, for engaging so well wih all the dark elements, and bringing positive light with his songs within this area, never forgot were he came from love it!
the moment i knew our youth was doomed was when Beck headlined a concert here in Dallas and when he came on. ALL the youngsters left. i was shocked and saddened at the same time.
I never met any Beck fans growing up so I never heard anything other than Loser and Where It's At and E-Pro (on Rockband 2 - I didn't like the song because I couldn't sing it as a kid) and I'm now getting into his music. Dude is such a talent and is so fearless with his approach to each song. I wish I would've gotten into him earlier I'm sure his music helped a lot of kids like me who grew up insecure about being different.
I was 4 when this came out, my dad loved and still loves beck. I love it too. It's much better then whats on the radio now. This song brings back so many childhood memories but I feel weird because I feel like most people were raised off of nursery rhymes when they were young.
Randomly remembered this song today while in the shower. Hadn’t listened to it in years. Makes me feel so nostalgic of when I was in high school, it’s still as great as the first time I heard it. 🥰🌼
que buena rola!!! de los pocos artistas que aún le importa el arte de hacer un disco con concepto, de igual manera presentar un video con una propuesta vanguardista..
I'm such a big fan. His music is a big part of my life. I was born into music and he's a big inspiration to my whole family. I wish I could tell him how much he matters to me.
I've known of Beck for a while and knew one or two of his songs but didn't realise how good he was, this is the first time I've heard this its brilliant!
This may be the only music video ever to combine Beck, Mexican culture and Al Jaffee's Mad Magazine Fold-Ins. Plus the song is super catchy. This is the best rock video ever.
Can he? I know he sings a little bit of Spanish in “Qué Onda Guero” but I’ve never actually heard him speak Spanish in conversation or anything like that.
@@Q-box He sings a bit of Spanish in a few of his other songs as well, Hotwax and Loser come to mind of the top of my head. I believe he was raised in a Hispanic neighborhood in Los Angeles, so it was kind of part of his culture
