@@craignourie8853 It starts with Lawrernce Welk, then The Beatles. The set is pure Ed Sullivan and DEVO shows up near the end. Late 50's to late 70's. All the images a kid growing up in the 70's would have seen on TV.
Well.... OK but arguably it's all a bit clever-clever, dressing up like the '60s and lampooning the hapless '80s hair-metallers. Everybody from the alternative music sphere in the '90s was doing '60s retro (either though their music or their styling); DeeeLite, Pulp, The Cardigans, St. Etienne, Oasis etc... so what Beck was doing here was not particularly original.....Heavy Metal or Hair Metal was/is a valid musical subculture with a huge and devoted following, so it's a bit sneery and snooty of Beck to be using them here with humorous/derisive intent in his "cool and ironic" video.
This may be my favorite track/video he ever did. Everything's just balls on, from the mod stuff to the hair metal to the Kraftwerk to the lush perfume commercial ambience of that sax solo.
I was born a year after this came out and my parents kept playing the album when I was younger. So recently I thought I might give the album another listen and when I had reached this track I couldn't remember it at first until that saxophone kicked in at 1:28 and then many memories came back to me. Great stuff.
I remember getting this album for my 12th birthday. my two best friends did extra chores for the week to split the cost of probably a 7.99 cd back then but its was a gift I still appreciate and think about every time I hear beck. magical album and perhaps the best songwriter in the last 30 years
Saw Beck onstage in London back in 1997, he is a tremendous live performer. If Sheldon from " The Big Bang Theory" had watched Jackie Wilson on "Shindig!" and listened to trip-hop, this would be the ultimate conclusion. Superb. "Odelay" remains a true gem, twenty years after its' release.
I haven't heard or thought about this song in years. Suddenly, this morning the opening choir notes started whistling from my mouth like a Casio keyboard. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out who it was that had invaded my head. I can't explain it, just weird. So I took it as a sign and put it into one of my playlists.
Wow. It just happened to me! I had Beck voice in my head from another song and I was like...this reminds me of a great song I loved when I was a kid-- and here I am lol
I was born in 2003, so I am not a 90s kid. But, my dad REALLY likes this guy and a lot of singers from the 80s and 90s! He made me appreciate the good music back then, I HATE the new music today! (most of it anyway)
T-800 Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 Alright, you can make stupid immature remarks like that but I'm just assuring you that you'll get no special recognition for being fucking twelve and liking this particular artist.
One of the most creative videos ever. "hey, let's make a kooky, weird, and fun video!" NAILED IT! My favorite is the girl crying over spilled milk. LOL. 😂
Beck is the new age Peter Gabriel. His creativity and changing sounds in his music is what won the award. He has something like 10 albums out and he always comes up with something new.
She's got cigarette on each arm She's got the lily-white cavity crazes She's got a carburetor tied to the moon Pink eyes looking to the food of the ages She's alone in the new pollution She's alone in the new pollution She's got a hand on a wheel of pain She can talk to the mangling strangers She can sleep in a fiery bog Throwing troubles to the dying embers She's alone in the new pollution She's alone in the new pollution She's alone in the new pollution She's alone in the new pollution She's got a paradise camouflage Like a whip-crack sending me shivers She's a boat through a strip-mine ocean Riding low on the drunken rivers She's alone in the new pollution She's alone in the new pollution
Nice blending of 60's and 70's imagery. The multicoloured tiles and dancers look like there from the Ed Sullivan show. The dots spelling New Pollution and circles are straight out of a 70's 7UP commercial. The over exuberant dancer looks like the guy from the TAMI show. Really enjoy the DEVO tribute. There is also a Lawrence Welk beginning. Whoops! Forgot early 80's Motley Crue.
Lyrics [Verse 1] She's got a cigarette on each arm She's got the lily-white cavity crazes She's got a carburetor tied to the moon Pink eyes looking to the food of the ages [Chorus] She's alone in the new pollution She's alone in the new pollution [Verse 2] She's got a hand on a wheel of pain She can talk to the mangling strangers She can sleep in a fiery bog Throwing troubles to the dying embers [Chorus] She's alone in the new pollution She's alone in the new pollution [Chorus] She's alone in the new pollution She's alone in the new pollution [Verse 3] She's got a paradise camouflage Like a whip-crack sending me shivers She's the boat in a strip mine ocean Riding low on the drunken rivers [Chorus] She's alone in the new pollution She's alone in the new pollution
I just recently tossed all my old cassettes, Odelay and Mellow Gold were both in there. One of the first CD's I ever bought was a Beck - Loser EP with 5 tracks. Best version of Soul Suckin Jerk imo.
Not just Becks music, but all the great 90's music. Nirvana, the toadies, smashing pumpkins, oasis, pearl jam, space hog, local h, filter and the list goes on and on....you know...bands that actually wrote and played their own shit....not having a "staff" to write everything for them
He's just himself, you are awsome too, you just think that you're not. He lives the present and his life, live yours too. It's like WOW. Like right now...
This song makes me nostalgic for the early 70s even though I wasn't around at the time. I remember watching this on MTV with awe at the weirdness of it when i was 13.
Beck is a genius and shows how you can like a song and message, even the beginnings of a video....but when you SEE it all, you're creeped-out, I love it! Loved him since High School (then again w/Bender)
The production on this is why it's one of my favorite songs. That and just has that goin out on Saturday Night looking good, smelling good, feeling good
Lila, I couldn't agree more. I'm a 90s kid so I totally remember when MTv was called Music Television and it was all about music videos and on occasion, the Real World. Now MTv is junk!
I remember back when Fuse was in it's heyday with all the Emo, Metal, Pop, Rap, and Indie. I remember even further back when "MTV" played Beavis and Butthead on a regular schedule. I miss seeing Primus on TV.....
+Captain Caveman Two I wholeheartedly respect your opinion. But you didn't like Bowie? If you haven't heard any of his early albums I'd strongly recommend giving them a listen sometime, especially the album tracks. A lot of his singles were mediocre, but his albums as whole pieces are some of my favourite stuff.
+chris mcaulay I really like Beck but l don't think he shares Bowie's rank in any concept nor decade. Bowie is one of the 5 most influential and respected musicians of the past Century! He invented and reinvented a bunch of things, even Beck is in the rows of his fans. Beck is so intuitive and witty, but l personally don't think he is the Bowie of our era, there is just one Bowie for all the eras :)
+illiterate thug I grew up with Bowie, never liked him then, still don't like him now. Sorry. However well done on not lowering yourself to the level of so many trolls on RU-vid. I salute you sir
Saxophone, driving in the car, laughing women in slow-mo, cowboy (plus other characters in outfits), not to mention all the LA-vibes that both Beck and Lynch share in common. I'm with you on that.
How is this 26 years old...... 1997 was a special year. ....... One the best of my life..... I keep hearing this again. And again lately...... I've got a feeling 2023 is gonna be as special
This song and music video is so ahead of its time, doesn't even seem 20 years old.. I remember watching the VMAs in 97 and this music video and album was nominated for so many awards. I was a kid at the time but this had such a huge impact on me.
Used to listen to this album all the way thru when i was 6 years old, thought i was off off 😂. I only knew Beck or this album because my parents owned this album. I can still listen to Odelay today because it is such a hidden gem and an amazing album
