Become a FAST Big Guy in BJJ by Rolling This Way

Are you a big guy training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu? If so, how do you roll with smaller training partners during your BJJ practices?
In my experience one of the best ways for big guys to roll with their smaller training partners is to do so with as much finesse and speed as possible.
The reason?
Because every big guy is strong, right? But not every big guy is fast. So by adapting your style and attempting to move at a smaller person's pace. You in turn train your body to be quicker. I mean who doesn't want to become a fast big guy?
One of the comments I get consistently when I roll in jiu jitsu with people is that I move really quickly for a big guy. This was not by accident or because I'm naturally a fast person. Instead, it's something I've developed over the years when training with my smaller training partners.
I've talked about it before. But back in 2009-2010 I went on a journey to create more movement and develop more speed into my game. When I watched Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions I noticed that I was attracted to the people that had very good movement.
I also noticed that in many cases. The person that stops moving usually loses the match.
So in order to boost my ability to move in BJJ. I started training with my smaller training partners in a much more speed and finesse oriented fashion. There is far more scrambles and constant adjusting. Which is tiring for a big guy at first, but gets easier overtime.
This encouraged my smaller training partners to roll more with me because I wasn't trying to smash their head off every time. And the benefit for me was that I learned to be faster and more fluid in Brazilian Jiu jitsu.
And I still have the option of turning the strength on and being heavy if I need it.
So if you're a big guy and you train with smaller guys often. Try rolling with them in the way I talk about in the video and see how it helps you.
I hope the video helps!

Tell him to come to my gym. I always target the biggest guys for rolls. Why? Because, that is the stated purpose of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Beat a bigger, stronger guy. You HAVE to do it.

It's weird I'm a big guy and I often feel like my weight advantage is unfair so I tend to go easy or back off my pressure, then I end up getting swept or submitted because I was being too nice on the mat. I fear being the big guy (who is a hobbyist at 42 years old) who goes too hard and hurts someone smaller who takes it really seriously.

Bullets and BJJ Mmm I think u should try ur best n not use strength or pressure weight at all, swim on ur opponent. Better yet, swim under ur opponent. I gotta go up against guys bigger than me all the time, so it doesn't make a difference. Honestly weight doesn't scare me. Height does, I'm usually the shortest Super Heavyweight.

I'm 235lbs & move pretty fast and have lots of endurance. I enjoy rolling with everyone and I think they like rolling with me too. We keep it playful and I do move fast with the smaller faster guys, it wears me out! I'ma one-stripe white belt so I get submitted even by little guys but it's cool. We just keep training!

great video! advice is top notch. As a bigger grappler I usually work on smooth movement with lighter guys and go like 40-50% strength. I also recommend changing schools if one has the problem of no enthusiastic training partners. The first school I joined no one wanted to roll because I was bigger. I always tried to use little to no strength and just move. you really just have to go to different open mats and find a better school. You'll know you found the right one when you go in and the 140lb guys ask you to roll, with confidence, when you're 230+ and he beats your ass.

It's like you made this one for me, and 3 years later I'm getting the exact advice I needed. Being the big guy in my gym, I often feel shunned because I'm "intimidating". Even though I know for a fact that as a white belt, I am the most gentle roller in the gym. I can *so* often use strength to submit someone, but I don't, I'll show I can get it, then let it go. I like this tip on trying to work on speed instead. It gives me a huge area to work on for the next 6 months.

Another great video, KY! Some of my favorite guys to roll with are the bigger, stronger guys, and the higher belts. Because they're not COMPETING with me, not trying to kill me, just practicing. They have nothing to prove. So they're just cool, don't squeeze and press on me with all their might. They're trying to make me better, and vice versa...

Excellent advice! Now... this is the challenge for big guys. I am 6'2" 250lbs. I too love movement. The thing I've learn over the 12 years of training in Bjj is learning to move can be tough and challenging for a big guy because most big guys are not use to moving their bodies efficiently and effectively. Smaller guys don't have as much to worry as big guys do in regards to movement because smaller guys don't have weight, bulk and size to navigate through. It is a different story for bigger guys. Furthermore learning to move is not about speed of movement or explosiveness as much as it is about control, agility, coordination, dexterity, and precision of movement.

I just want to say bud I totally agree The biggest thing a reason I guess because I move so fast is because I took state high school sophomore I was 98 pounds, when I actually was a junior I wrestled at 112, and then when I was a senior I wrestled drop you off 140 to 119 so I had to learn how to be fast and I just got bigger but I stayed fast I don't know what the deal is but some people have that in them :)
@TanyerLamb
@TanyerLamb 8 лет назад
I fully agree! As a pretty small lady person (135lb max), guys who roll with too much strength have no weight limit/minimum. I've had guys yank my arms into a submission or 'sweep' me by just shoving me off of them. Not only does it greatly increase my risk of bodily injury (which is a no-no as a training partner), it creates terrible habits when you have one of your biggest tools taken away. Same applies to all types of jiujitsu players, if my flexibility and speed are taken away, I need good habits and technique to fall back on.

What about certain positions that are inherently painful? I feel like I cannot go knee on belly on smaller guys and the ladies. I’m 240 lbs and 6’5”. If I don’t apply proper pressure they take advantage. If I do apply it, I am potentially hurting people. Same for Kesa Gatame.

Same, I'm 255, 6'1 and I hesitate to go full, pressure on someone who's not 200+ even higher belts, I sometimes get lite, and that's an immediate advantage for them. Think ima just put it on everyone, excluding women, because if they're getting after it, I don't want to be insulting. Got yelled at by a blue belt for "holding back"

This is a real problem for me as a coach for a small club. I have a 330lb guy and I’m a 130lb woman 😂 it’s really tricky because we don’t have too many people but he’s really keen to learn how to roll safe. I’ve been teaching him how to play positions that don’t involve him playing heavy top positions. He’s been doing butterfly, guard retention, shin on shin. It is tricky though! Smaller/more experienced guys and girls will run around his guard as he isn’t very fast or mobile but he’s getting more patient and controlled when dealing with these scenarios.

I'm big and strong and there's really only one guy who I match up with in my class. It's ok through, just have to give up the top sometimes in order to work technique and work on bottom game. Not for big egos... I get myself into bad spots because I gave up top, just a part of playing nice with my training partners. If it's not fun and rewarding for everyone, then it just fizzles out. Good video, thank you.

I'm a white belt, just started a month ago. I rolled with a woman who was a purple belt yesterday I probably had 80 pounds on. She tore me apart. I'm still trying to get stronger, and it's happening naturally as I've started training, but that cemented in my mind pretty firmly that BJJ is a lot more about technique than muscle.

I really wish i have someone bigger than me to roll with in my gym!!! The way i see it, besides being fun to do BJJ but in the end it’s all about who can win in a real fight protecting himself or his love ones. The smaller guys should be grateful to having an opportunity to practice against a bigger guy to prepare them to winning a fight against a bigger guy in the streets who doesn’t have any ground game OR maybe learning how survive in the streets against a bigger guy with ground game.

everything has its benefits.. smaller guys sometimes cause me problems in side control.. of course as a big guy you can put your weight on them but if they are in good shape and know a thing or two they create space for slipping that leg into guard really fast so weight distribution + preventing him of doing that is sometimes really annoying for me cause you have to be alert all the time.. big guys on the bottom try bridge 2, 3 times and they start breathing heavy.. small dudes tire me out :D

I'm 230 usually and I just go easy on small guys. We already won, we're big. If they're really good then I go a little harder. I go low energy the entire round and give myself ten total seconds to explode each round to set up submissions or escape or get a takedown or whatever. If I'm beating someone much more than 50-60% of the time then I assume I'm going too hard for them and I dial it back. Of course there are some people I'm inevitably going to beat every time we encounter each other but I keep my winning average around 50% in classes otherwise everyone thinks you're an asshole and you get kicked out of gyms.

I'm 5' 10" 180lbs but there are three much bigger white belts at my gym. I don't particularly enjoying rolling with them but I don't complain or hold it against them. It's just that, given the choice, I prefer to roll with people closer to my size because it feels like we both get more out of it. It might change as I get more experience but, while I'm still only six months in I don't really see the benefit in trying to fight off 260lbs that I can't even close guard around.

He continues to pummel me with his 45 lb. weight advantage (I'm 135) despite my obvious easy pace. He needs to calm the fuck down lol. I've learned to only roll positional sparring with him because he'll just yank submissions at what feels like 90%.

@michellelaws1291
@michellelaws1291 7 лет назад
While I definitely appreciate this advice, I'm not sure working on faster game is necessarily the answer. I feel like there are tons of big guys and gals who are plenty speedy, but still get slammed with the "you're using too much strength" argument. My biggest problem with this is when two lower belts roll together. Neither has tons of skill which means the bigger/stronger/fitter person has a definite advantage. What do you do when you're the bigger person in this situation? Go slower to give them more opportunities? Let them sweep or submit when you could break out of it? Decide to only 'flow' with them rather than rolling?
@bigmember5908
@bigmember5908 6 лет назад
to me it depends on the situation, if the smaller person plans to compete in the open weight division they have to get used to bigger stronger opponents that do things to them even without technique because if you lsoe the medal saying "but only lost cus he was stronger" does not get you a medal of your own....so I kind of angle it (I am big btw) based on what my partners training goals are.

He's pretty small to me lol. Anyways, my advice to him, when going up against a smaller guy, let him get dominance over u and see if u can get out, or do positions u would never do in a tournament, and then when u are in tournament with a big man, you'll be ready. Although I think that in his weight class it goes up to 220 I'm not sure.

I weigh 200 lbs. I usually pull guard with smaller rolling partners. There are some who are more athletic than I am, so the weight difference isn't a big deal, so I try to smash them

IM extremely strong and heavy but I hate misusing my strength because it'll tire me out and might hurt someone but I do like testing for how long they can hold my weight and that keeps them pinned down. Even though they have much better cardio they always come out burnr out while Im fresh

As a bigger buy who is 6'4'' and around 380lbs and is interested in training in BJJ. Should I try to slim up a bit beforehand or just dive in head first. BTW I do hit the gym pretty regular. I'm not a slob I'm just fat

I've been doing BJJ for 1 year now and I have a wrestling background. I have a wrestling bjj style, if I'm having trouble, I instinctly go back to scrambles, throws, dominating and techniques like (arm triangle, americana), stuff like that. Everybody say I have a strenght advantage, and i'm one of the biggest guys in the gym. When I fight smaller people, I focus on only doing techniques and no strenght at all. But is it okay that I use strenght when i'm fighting bigger opponents? Or should I try to JUST fight technical against everybody? And how do you JUST fight technical? I dont think I get it 100%

At 6'08" 300 lbs brown belt. I love to roll with the smaller guys at my gym. They make me use my technique not my strength. Unfortunately some of the bigger guys shy away from me because I have become a technical grappler. This video hit the nail square on the head. Thanks for it

I have the worst of both worlds being a short heavyweight. It is hard to not just smash lighter people. It also sucks being called out by the bigger people for being overly reliant on strength and then being out muscled by them. How to I go toe to toe with the giants in strength and still match the speed of people my height?

I have my first tournament coming up. I’ll be competing at the ultra heavy weight for 16-17 year olds (197lbs+) what should I focus my training on? Btw I do Gi bjj 3x a week and nogi once a week and submission wrestling 1 a week.

im somewhat new to bjj and was wondering kinda the opposite im the small guy in the gym, despite being 5'11'' i only weight about 110-115 and im struggling with being outweighed by at least 30-40 all the way up to over 100 pounds and im just struggling with being constantly stuck under these guys that i can't move with strength or technique, have only rolled with one guy of a similar weight (about 125) and it was themost enjoyable and fun roll i have ever had despite him being a purple belt how do i deal with these bigger guys just smashing me and using their strength alot.

What do you Think about Open weight bjj tournaments? I like them I don't have to cut weight.

I don't understand why you would shy away from larger people. In other sports like boxing you might but imo in BJJ it really doesn't matter.

I can understand I'm 240 and I pull back my strength when I roll with even the higher rank belts ( I'm a white belt) but I have Combato Jiujutsu experience. I am outta shape because its been years since I worked out because of my job and I gas out quickly. I'm really strong but my cardio sucks😭

Don't I am 6'2 265lbs. I used to in the beginning but as long as your not trying to hurt your training partner don't feel bad. It's better they learn in a safe environment then in the street.

Only sore losers complain, real warrior take on the challenge and keep on trying no matter what, makes a victory for them more solid. Ironically it's only little Blue and Purples that complain, white belts just think I'm super good, Browns think I'm fast, Blacks think I'm... Well at least I try, but even with little guys who are purple and blue, if I just use speedy body surfing on them or back game sweeping, they'll blame weight and strength, there's no pleasing them, those that are whites, blues and purples that don't complain and call me out to roll, those are ture Jiu Jitsu grapplers. Much respect to them!!! Oss!!! 🙏
