@terryrance2662 Our V6 and 2 V8 Detroits are still going strong and still earning. They also visit the workshop less than our modern day fleet.

Arthur oakleys of Hereford had a good few of them back in the day. The one driver from Leominster who drove one had this pink panther sign on the front. He drove it like he stole it as well. It had an up rated engine in it a cummins I think and went like hell. The good old days with no limiter. 🚛💨

In Italy on Subito.it I have seen a pair of private seller that sold parts. I'm researching a two stroke engine for my boat.

Driver is nearly red lining that empty truck. It should be kept in the green power band. All he's doing is using more fuel and In creasing engine wear..

I think you'll find that on a detroit 8V71 engined truck the green goes all the way to the red they just don't do lugging screaming is how you drive a two stroke, as for fuel anybody with the slightest interest in fuel usage wouldn't have bought one in the first place.

@@acd1202 Fuel usage is hugely important for most hauliers. Although having said that mine was a balancing act between power /time and fuel usage. I was an O/D doing Malaga to Calais return pulling tilts at 44t+. The job needed doing obviously within driving hours and within the working week. The F12 Volvo 400 I had I worked it hard. The FH16 700 I replaced it with would pull 44t++ at 100kph on the gradients in top gear and could do the job well within driving hours but at the expense of fuel usage. Most hauliers though without such a tight schedule would rather that extra 1to 2mpg. Trucks like the Bedford KM were never suited to distance work and am surprised they ever fitted the 2 stroke detroits. I've had experience of a TM with 8v71 and it was like many old trucks of the day ie dire. Not just a criticism of Bedford though, the Ford D series 2817 with Perkins V8 was the worst thing ive ever driven, any ERF was a close second..

@@Draxindustries1 my point exactly Andy. That is why so few Detroit 8V71s were ever sold in Europe, most hauliers, like me, wouldn't have given one yard space due to their dire thirst, on the positive I believe that they were reliable and that particular vehicle is definitely improved by having a 13 speed Fuller a rare option in a TM. The later v92 was supposedly better, but who would try one after the 4.5 to 6 of the v71.

@@acd1202 Sorry, I didn't realise you were a haulier. 4.5 to6mpg isn't good. The F16 did more than that. Slightly off topic I started doing this particular job with an F7 224hp. I had the chassis lengthened to accommodate twin tanks and long pin trailers, and an F10 rear axle fitted with air susp. Brilliant range change /splitter Volvo box but at 40t I had to work that gearbox! It was underpowered but did the job albeit slowly. I'm actually thinking of going back to the Spanish firm I worked for (CETva) with a 2 year old FH 16 750. Its still pulling aggregate in bulk bags (polished stone) with tilts Malaga / Calais bringing groupage return. A gamble though in today's climate..

Funnily enough after having been brought up in haulage and spending my early years very much in it, a mixture of coil carriers direct for British Steel/Corus and silo tanks on Schmidt/EBT I've been out for 20 years from having my own and it's 5 years since I've even driven one, I'm currently, at an age when I should know better giving serious thought to getting back into it because of the current climate. Won't be driving one myself though, at least not regularly.
