Through its protagonists messing up at every chance, Beef urges us viewers to curse them out and at the same time feel empathy. it was phenomenal, powerful, with a clear artistic vision. i started it on friday night and finished when the sun came out

“Beef” and “The end of the F*ing World” are two shows on Netflix that you just ride along with the characters and their journeys. Feels oddly satisfying and uncomfortable at the same time!

When every character is a bad person, it's hard to single out anyone to hate them because they all do stupid shit. I might even be more annoyed at George, who the show keeps reminding us as someone so "good", because he's too naive.

It's hard to describe this show in a way that makes it sound as appealing as it is. "It's like an Asian Seinfeldt drama... with guns?" "It's about road rage and none of the characters are likable, and also it has nothing to do with road rage, mostly just rage."'

You were really adamant about not liking George. Other than the fact that he makes those hideous sculptures which I think he admits, he doesn't seem to make any more bad decisions than all of the other characters. I felt bad for him most of the time. Idkw...

For me I was done with George upon his first appearance When Amy comes back after the road rage incident and tries to unload her dark feelings about it, he doesn't give her a chance to feel heard, he just tells her to be more grateful rather than let the rage and unhappiness from the incident plus the compounding stress of her work, out. In context, with how much she doesn't want to be seen, the rage incident had given her courage to open up abt it but he immediately shuts that change down and forces her to retreat into herself (as she has done for most her life)

@@TinycanKill I get ya. But I think for the most part he was pretty supportive, not really knowing or understanding all the crazy stuff she was going through. It's revealed to him in pieces and he doesn't really lose it until she tells him about Paul.

George is the archetypal enmeshed son with the devouring mother complex that Jung wrote about. He's a man that deliberately had his development stunted by his mother to meet her needs. You can see it in the scene where Fumi is alone in the coffee shop and sees a couple together. She's emotionally exploiting George, thus making him ripe for someone like Amy, whose entire existence is a manipulation. That's the Faustian bargain, the "mother/caretaker" takes care of his material needs, he fills their emotional void. It's actually the exact same role that Paul plays for Danny. It's interesting that George elicits such distaste from people on a show with such a strong theme of empathy for others. He's one of the most decent people on the show but because he doesn't have very traditional masculine traits people dislike him.
