BEFORE & AFTER: How to Install a Toilet Yourself - Thrift Diving

The wall stencil in this bathroom can be found here: bit.ly/pretty-stencil (affiliate link). Our toilet was too small and short and I wanted to install a toilet that was higher and at a more comfortable height. Removing and installing a toilet is an easy DIY project that a homeowner can do in 1-2 hours (or less) by themselves, depending on the weight of the toilet. Watch this video and learn how to make your toilet installation go smoothly. A big thanks for American Standard for sponsoring the complimentary toilet for this tutorial!
****NOTE: In the video, I caulked the toilet. I have not caulked other toilets, but I decided to caulk this one per instructions in a Handyman article that suggested it. Many have noted NOT to caulk so that leaks can easily be detected. I would agree now, years later, that I would likely not caulk again. Skip the caulk. And there have been no leaks, by the way. ;)

Great job and thanks for the tips. I will be installing two toilets myself - all alone. And vinyl flooring. Love doing things myself and 74 years old to add to that.

Wow, old timer, you need a pat on the back, I am going to do this for my parents' place, I will do the toilet myself, suspecting leak and need to check the floor condition, but will get a quote from home depot about putting down a vinyl sheet flooring, dad's 82 and he ain't doing too well with aim especially when he also has dementia ^^"

pro tip: leave an uncaulked space around both sides of the flange area to spot leaks early.. since this one is caulked all the way around, it will contain any water and likely cause premature mildew, mold, decay and rot in flooring and subfloor

A helpful tip: Should've replaced the angle stop (water valve @ the wall) because it's most likely as old as your last toilet and that rubber washer inside *will* deteriorate on you over time, meaning the next time you need to shut the water off, you won't be able to. You don't want that kind of angle stop, you want to get the quarter turn kind which use a ball valve to stop the flow, no rubber washer needed. You have the compression type which, if you get lucky, can be replaced by unscrewing the valve from the nut and fitting a new valve in it's place. All in all, you did a fantastic job for your first time, even though the caulking was a bit preempted. Good job.

Even I know you should, you do NOT want all different kinds of mold to start growing under your toilet because of water, chemicals and over bacteria getting under the toilet. Very well done!! I love your vids! You make everything look easy. The only thing I would change is the caulk. I don't ever caulk the bottom of toilets. The reason is because how would you know if it is leaking once you caulk it. Think about it. If you seal the bottom and it is leaking then the water will just destroy everything below the toilet and you wouldn't know till it was too late.
@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 5 лет назад
I agree with you, Matt. I typically do it that way as well, but after reading the article, I tried a different way, where it says that the caulk actually helps with creating a better seal and helping to prevent rocking, which could cause leaks. I am planning to take a plumbing class for my carpentry program at my comm college and this is something I'm looking forward to getting the instructor's opinion on. I agree with you, though. At least, caulking early would prevent you from knowing for sure if there is a leak. However, the instructions for the toilet also recommended putting the sealant on the bottom edge. So it's a toss up! Lol

Hey btw, an experienced man said “don’t ever caulk around the base of your toilet, because if you have a leak, you will not notice it and it can soak down into the wood.”

right. I never get why people do it, wouldn't you want to know that toilet leaks lol

i always heard the caulk significantly reduces water noise. as well as wrapping the pipes

I'm getting ready to remodel my bathroom, although it is going to be one piece at a time. So, thank you for this, toilet will go first, then vanity. Tub is another deal. Replacing oyster shell (yuck) with white. :)

You are so awesome at eliminating gender roles. I've seen you do floors, REMOVE AND INSTALL DOORS and the entire frame and now a toilet! I love it because I've always been a believer that women can do it all and you certainly exemplify that. Thanks for the channel and dyi's Serena, you rock. God bless.

You are so sweet, thank you! I want women to feel like they can tackle their own house! When I moved into my house in 2010 it scared the crap out of me! I was worried about how to do this...how to do that...what if something broke...how can we afford to decorate....and now look! If I can learn, anyone can! It takes years to build up the knowledge. And as you can see from my videos, I am still learning. But that is the fun part: the learning! And as air learn, I pass on and inspire others to not be afraid to learn too! :)

I lived in a house two years ago and we had a leaking toilet the landlord paid $260 for the fix up in 1 hour.😮 I moved and I have another leaking toilet its been leaking for 5 months It's sad I have to do the maintenance around my apartment the landlord will do nothing. The next person who moves in should be thankful. 😄 Thank you for making it look so easy.

Short toilets are actually better for you. Since humans were designed to squat really low to poop. If you dont squat far enough, it can be harder to use the bathroom
