I really appreciate how you discussed labels. Often times you get RU-vidrs who only talk about how a product had ''90 calories!" but skim past the part where it's actually really horrible for you considering the ingredients. It creates an unhealthy mindset of low is good and as long as it's below 100 cals who cares what company puts in it? Great video, very informative and honest!

What great advice and suggestions, Meghan. Thank you! Everything you're preparing in this video look great but I'm especially curious about the hearty soup (?) that you show prepared at about 1.5 minutes into it. You have it in a white bowl with a saucer underneath; it clearly has kale and carrots, and a rich-looking broth. Have you ever shared that recipe? Also, you have linked your Gut Health Fundamentals Handbook which is fantastic but do you refer in the video to a different guide, one on getting started with healthier eating? Again, thanks.

Thanks for the very nice video. Can you please talk about salt? There is so many conflicting articles and videos about how much salt is too much. How much would you recommend for daily intake?
@ClareWagner3
@ClareWagner3 5 лет назад
Canadian guidelines would suggest 1000-1500 mg sodium per day as ideal (it is an important electrolyte), but definitely less than 2300 mg. We find sodium in lots of things we eat, naturally, but most processed foods have added salt to preserve the food and add flavour. It adds up fast! Best things to do are: eat more whole foods, use less processed foods (but when you do, select low-sodium options where possible), and try to avoid adding salt to your home cooking and at the table. One thing to look out for are bread products! Have you ever checked the sodium content of a bagel? Most are at least 1000mg just for a bagel!

I used to looooove fries with gravy. Now, I have cravings but eat about a quarter of what I used to eat loll It started happening when I've started eating more healthy. I used to eat oatmeal packages for breakfast. I've started adding ground flax and chia seeds to it with berries and I love it even more. I'm planning on slowly ditching the packages for a bag of plain oatmeal to make it even healthier.
@jenniferj4921

raph009 yah, just get the oats that you cook. It doesn’t take very long and it’s better for you. I also eat it with berries, flax seed and cinnamon and I love it. Lately I started adding some crushed almonds too for more texture and healthy fats. It’s great

Great video! I’ve got a question. Most nutritionists say that dairy is not ideal for your health. Though not a fan of fresh milk, I feel good after eating yogurt, cheese, kefir, butter etc. Is there something inherently bad about all dairy, or is eating fermented/non-fresh dairy okay if it soothes the gut instead of bloating it like it does for others?
@meghanlivingstone
@meghanlivingstone 5 лет назад
Great question! Dairy is not a necessary addition to the diet, but it's totally fine for some people (and of course, not fine for others!) I'd just suggest you choose organic dairy when possible, fermented foods like you mentioned (e.g. kefir), and not go overboard with it. xx
@jenniferj4921
@jenniferj4921 5 лет назад
brightpurpleviking if you are eating plain yogurt anyway (non-flavored), you will probably like coconut-milk based yogurt. That helped me decrease dairy and now I just eat cheese and butter sparingly. I’ve heard butter is not so bad because it lacks a particular protein found in most dairy products, but I’m not sure.
@ClareWagner3
@ClareWagner3 5 лет назад
Hey, I have an undergraduate in nutrition, and am working toward my masters degree to become a registered dietitian. Dairy is completely healthy as long as you aren't intolerant or allergic to lactose, which is becoming more common, but doesn't make it bad for everyone. It isn't a necessary part of a healthy diet, but it certainly can be :) You can pick organic if you want, like Meghan suggests, but personally I wouldn't say non-organic options are bad for you either. In Canada, all milk is well-tested before being dispatched or turned into a secondary product like yogurt. Dairy also contains a lot of good nutrients like calcium that are important for our bones to stay strong and muscles to function. You can get calcium elsewhere, but it's the most bioavailable from milk! If you enjoy it and it doesn't cause problems for you, there is no reason to avoid it at all :)

Hi Meghan all the meals look great! I was wondering what your thoughts were on the controversy on eating chicken and eggs are? As far as eggs being high is saturated fat and chicken being bad for you because of all the added hormones they are being Injected with. Just wondering..
@ClareWagner3
@ClareWagner3 5 лет назад
Hey! I have an undergraduate degree in human nutrition and am currently doing a masters in nutrition, to become a registered dietitian in Canada. Eggs - love them! Eggs have been touted as super healthy and as unhealthy over the years, so I see why you're confused by this. It's true they are higher in saturated fat (at least the yolk), but for most people, I'd still consider it a healthy protein source (in moderation, like all things). Chicken - the meat itself is great in terms of being lean protein with little fat (skinless especially). You're right, our farming methods are potentially risky in terms of the hormones or other crap they inject (like sodium phosphates, blechh). Your best bet is to buy from local farmers who do not use hormones and sell you plain old chicken. If you see a nutrition label on a cut of chicken at a grocer, it's usually a sign there is something injected for flavour that you probably should avoid - look at the ingredients. If you see anything that isn't plain English, it's probably not your best option.

What are your thoughts on "plant-based" margarines like Earth Balance or Smart Balance?
@meghanlivingstone
@meghanlivingstone 5 лет назад
Kathy Winstead hi there! Those are basically just glorified spreads which I don’t recommend. I would suggest coconut oil, butter or ghee instead 👍🏼 :)
@ClareWagner3
@ClareWagner3 5 лет назад
As a graduate student in human nutrition, I would say plant-based margarines can be a healthy option as long as they are non-hydrogenated. They are basically a whipped form of plant oils like vegetable, olive or canola oils with emulsifiers to hold their shape. Emulsifiers might sound scary, but really, they can be found in nature! Plant oils have a much healthier fat profile than butter, ghee, or coconut oil as Meghan suggests in her comment. I would suggest choosing a margarine over these options any day, as long as you are mindful of the ingredients (i.e. pick low or no sodium options, check to make sure they are non-hydrogenated, look at the ingredients).

What do you think about buying organic vs non-organic? Is organic worth the markup in regards to health benefits?
@meghanlivingstone
@meghanlivingstone 5 лет назад
Hey there! Overall, I prefer organic especially for specific types of foods (I suggest checking out ewg.org's Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 list). Generally speaking though if someone is used to eating a lot of processed foods, I suggest they just eat more whole foods first before stressing too much about everything being organic. Regarding its markup, there are benefits in terms of environmental sustainability and biodiversity, quality of soil and the food itself. Although sometimes it's much better to buy local as opposed to an "organic" vegetable that was shipped halfway across the world.

@@meghanlivingstone I don't know how it works there. Here in Portugal people do have that idea as well, that local is better. I live in a small village, with lots of local producers, that sell their products in the local markets. And I prefer to buy controlled organic products in the store, because I know how many nasty sulfates, herbicides and chemicals local producers use, in an uncontrolled way, on their stuff 😣

I like most of what Meghan has said here, though I don't fully agree with her conversation about food label reading and alternatives to refined sugar. I am completing my masters degree in human nutrition in pursuit of becoming a registered dietitian. I already have an undergraduate degree in nutrition, too. So, with the food labels, I think of course it is important to read the ingredients, and the more readable they are to you as a consumer, the better... for example, sodium phosphates are potentially damaging to our kidneys, and they are in a TON of products you probably pick up all the time! But I would encourage you DO look at the nutrient facts label as well. There is important information about how much salt, what kinds of fat or carbohydrates are in the food, etc. This can become very useful information for a health-minded individual to inform better choices and compare products. I would say calories are important to be mindful of, but aren't the whole story or often aren't the most important, like Meghan says. What matters more is where the calories come from, and what other nutrients are being provided. An example would be avocado - very high in fat and therefore calories... but also contain lots of wonderful nutrients. So, they're healthy, but in moderation, like most foods. I think that is what Meghan was getting at, maybe just went about it differently. FINALLY, sugar... well, I do not agree that using more natural sweeteners like maple syrup or honey are any healthier than refined sugar. Your body uses them in the same way, because at the end of the day, it is all simple sugar. Technically, the tree or the bee has refined the sugar rather than a mechanical process. If eating natural foods is important to you, or you enjoy the flavour more, that's wonderful. But for most people, any form of 'sugar', natural or not, will still cause spikes in blood sugar and still contains the same amount of calories. Limit all forms of sugar, but let yourself enjoy it occasionally, in moderation, as with all things.

But guess what I didnt stick to my plans n diet but I also gained more weight fromexcessive eating becauseI thought I wouldn't get to eat the food I loved and missed so my binge eating sessions made me happy! But after you realized how much you ruined yourself, you feel guilty and since I'm not the type to puke after eating, I feel even more shamed that I ate so much even though I felt full, I could not stop.
