Thanks for the refresher. We have 77 windows to restore on our old abandoned mansion we are restoring. Tips like you just demonstrated will help immensely.
You guys rock! I've just checked out your RU-vid channel and its amazing!! I'm glad my video has helped. If you need any one to one help just drop me an email through the support tab on my website www.sashwindowschool.com
I am so proud of myself. A senior, I watched the video and replaced the sash cords in my 118 year old house. Because of the storm windows, the double hung window glass hadn't been cleaned in over 30 years. Thank you for posting such a thorough video. I used my own method for determining the length of the cord, and it worked. Now, just 25 windows to go. 😅
I am gob-smacked. Have renovated a seriously old, damaged sash. Struggling like mad to re-hang with weights (omg). This video (and your free pdf) is gold to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is the clearest, video on the subject out there - absolutely no doubt. You deserve the highest place in heaven.
I understand it’s a beginners guide ( I’ve been doing sashes for 30 years) but I always tell people before they take the parting bead off. Just screw a screw an inch under the top sash , incase it’s no longer attached to the cords and could otherwise come crashing down once it free
Good instructional video. But I have to say, perhaps repairing a window sash from scratch might be a bit more easy to follow rather than contend with a window that's not got a broken cord. Plus, I couldn't find the PDF (only your transcript is displayed). Has it been removed? novice repairer - Paul NSW Australia
Hi. V good. Made it look so easy, also very correct about old paint making renewal difficult, but if you watch other video on fixing OLD windows they show few methods how to deal with that without destroying woodwork. Thanks
Clear presentation of how to do it, tips and tricks to ease the job. Downloaded the pdf which pulls it all together and is good to refer to. Only need the weather to clear up now so I don't freeze whilst I replace the cords. Thanks for your help.
Hi Colin, thanks for the feedback. I am of putting the final touches on a members only online course with individual lessons / bonuses on how to replace sash cords and get over any problems you may encounter while replacing them. I am looking for people to test out the course before we launch, if you are interested please email me at info@sashwindowschool.com Thanks Phil
I replaced an old original broken sash cord on a heavily painted window frame more simply without any disassembly. I used a hacksaw to cut out one side of the original double pulley, attached a new cord to a powerful small magnet, installed a new pulley and attached the other end of the cord to the top/side of the window using a screwed in small metal clip that extended s lightly into the channel - no mess - a lot less work - no repainting -works perfectly well.
Thanks for the warning about the upper sash. I have one without any ropes and narrowly missed being clobbered by it recently. Trying to rehang my 100 year old windows and needing info on uppers with chains, not ropes. Your video had a lot of additional useful info.
I dont know why you stopped making videos but this video just saved me over $2000 dollars on my old windows... I took it step by step, and it was just as you described. After only paying $100 dollars to repair the broke glass in both windows i was done
Love your videos Phil, always clear and to the point. My side stops are nailed in and also held in place by the top and bottom stops. The nails are really long so i cant get the blighters free. Do i just have to snip the nails?
Hi there - do you have a tutorial on how to replace the glazing? I have double glazing, and I am not sure the new glazing has the same weight, so I might need a new cord
The purpose of sash Windows was, in the summer you open the top and the bottom. The hot air rising will then flow out the top of the window allowing cool air from outside to come in at the bottom. In winter you keep the top one closed. Then the hot air stays in. Fresh air will come in at the bottom.
In the pdf it says mark the box frame at the same measurement point ..2" above where your rebate starts. Is this the same formula for both top and bottom sashes..?
Top video. I'm about to give it a go, and replace a pane of glass too. Already did one sash window, but only the bottom needed fixing but I had so much trouble getting the weight covers off which I now realise was probably because I didn't take off the parting beads!
Was just fixing a rotten sill and of course the second sash cord goes at the worst possible time. Now I need to learn how to replace a sash cord too... thank you for this video. "Caked in paint" is exactly what this window is 🤢
@@sashwindowschool3375 I thought so lol. I bravely took on a sash job on a very large window despite never having done it before your video really helped. How do you choose your cord thickness and what brand do you use?
