Hi Jim, Thanks for the great videos on your channel. I’ll be using them for when I do my own windows up in Edinburgh. 1. You mention 1 kilo of paint added to the top sash for painting, how much additional weight should I add to the top sash for windows already painted? Should the top sash weights still be heavier than the top sash after painting? 2. Should the same difference in weight be applied to the bottom sash, but weights lighter than bottom sash? 3. Also is there a video of how to attach the sash to the cord? My bottom sashs’ swing in for cleaning so one side is able to be unhooked, the other is side is nailed in. Thanks again for all your help!

I send you a message about a large window and doubling weights on one of your pages. I Lost the link for your reply but I figured out the weights that are needed are heavier. They were in the pocket. Thanks for your response!

Very helpful video as I'm going to be changing my cords soon. You don't say what the red tags are for and I can't find the next video in the sequence to enlighten me. Are they to stop the cord fraying? Have ordered Mighton waxed sash cord if that makes a difference so I guess I can't just put a lighter to the ends like I would if it was nylon or polyester.

The red tape is simply to stop the ends of nylon cord fraying. Some people melt the ends with a lighter, but I prefer to keep naked flame away from 100 year old timber/dust. I find it's much quicker to tape up. It's a personal preference. With normal sash cord there is no need to tape up. I use nylon sash cord when using cordclams.

@@jimsear Thanks Jim - will see how it goes and tape up if looks like chance of fraying.

I'm about to start a new series of videos over the coming weeks. I'll make sure to include a video on that.

@@jimsear Hey Jim, Really liked your preliminary video with simple yet thorough explanations - especially appreciated you detailing the knots (which others don't do). But like Graham said... Do you have the 2nd part video on knotting up the sash end of the cord & reinstalling the windows yet? Thanks so much! Keep up the great work! PS. Could you detail the part about measuring the weights? I'm guessing we weigh the sash on a bathroom scale, then weigh both weights (either side) at the same time - and they should approximately equal the weight of the (painted) sash?

Is there no follow on video for finishing this job? How do you go from the end of this video to attaching the cord to the sash windows? Cheers

What sort of clamps are you using, please? I've ended up in a bit of a mess with a knot at the pulley that I don't have the strength to undo without losing the end of the rope in the box and having to start again from scratch.

I use long nosed molegrips. But you can simply nail the rope to the stile. WhatsApp me and I'll talk to through it 07930335937

Why does the tape have to be red.

Thanks for the heart but you did say in the video that you would explain later why the tape has to be red. Why is that?
@jimsear
@jimsear 2 года назад
It's a matter of personal choice. I do it in red because that's the colour of the tape I had with me. I also use red when I'm fitting Cordclams so that clients know where to pull to release the cord.

@@jimsear okay, well I'm just pointing out what you said in the video, thought you'd like to know and tell those people who are running around town looking for red tape before they start the process. I'm sure it would be appreciated.Thats what I do, I have all the items ready before I attack the job based upon the advice I'm getting from those who are giving instructions.

much easier to tie to the window first, then drop your other end thru the pulley and down to the sash weight. This is especially true on larger , heavier windows. much lighter to maneauver

You're right for certain circumstances. There are so many ways to do the same job. They all work. The way I've shown is one way. It would be fantastic if you make a video of another way, and I'll be delighted to link to it. The more examples of the process are on RU-vid the easier it will be for people new to it to get the job done safely.

This is a great idea. I'm about ready to do my first window, and after I do that one to get the "hang of it" haha, I will be doing a bunch more. Doing it your way would possibly allow me to work by myself and not involve my husband, who is the one that cut the dang cord to begin with. (By accident, theoretically, when using the heat gun).
