Is it a tradition, or is it a fact of life at the Indianapolis 500? Every year when you show up for Race Day, pit lane is lined with stencils signifying each driver's pit box. On this episode of Behind the Bricks, Doug Boles investigates the origins of the stencil work and shows you how we bring this to life each and every May.

I spent all of qualifying weekend there and met everyone in the pits, garages. Best experience in my life. Met Doug, TR, AJ, Mario, essentially every driver and most for over a few min. Then Paul Page!!! Talked to him for half an hour sitting on the wall, I wasn't even allowed that close. Checked that one off the list!!!

My dad was one of the many sign painters that did lettering on the cars from the early 70s to early 90s, so seeing another job lost to time to printers really sucks. Indy is about tradition, some things should remain traditionally done. Paint it.

Fascinating history and imagery from the past, appreciate the reverence but disappointed in the contemporary version using printed vinyl. It’s obvious IMS cares about its own heritage, why not honor that with something hand painted?
