I think the part at 3:54 where gerry says "if you can abandon yourself to that romantic notion that you love somebody so much and if somebody loved you that much that you almost just want to forget about everything else" is the one of the biggest reasons people choose the phantom over raoul. The phantom just has so much passion.
the phantom of the opera has almost become an obsession. it hit me hard and wormed its way into my heart and soul. even seeing behind the scenes and constantly reminded it's all fiction, I still fantasize how the movie should have ended and my heart bleeds for the Phantom as I know what it's like to be judged and misunderstood. by far my most favorite movie despite that no matter how many times I see it, it always leaves me in tears. Gerard Butler forever!
Guys, you're describing my whole life!! Since i've watched it i'm so obsessed with it and i'm still waiting for someone who sings to me and let me fall in trance
I'm obsessed too. I also saw it on Broadway first....4th row, center stage. I actually ducked when the chandelier dropped because it landed only about 4 inches from my head. then when the movie came out, it starred one of my favorites, sexy Gerard, and I had seen some of the other cast members in other films, so I knew it was also to become a favorite.
Juliette Aurora Yeah like he's not my top favorite but definitely one of my favorites because his acting is out of this world. There are plenty of phantoms who can sing but completely lack in passion. Gerard's not-so-bad-but-damn-sexy voice with his I'm-who's-boss acting/passion makes him a great phantom.
Matt Scott It’s a half mask in the broadway musical that this movie is based on. On promotional material, the full mask is depicted because that was made before they decided to go with the half mask to allow the Phantom to sing easier and show more emotion.
If you really enjoy phantoms that devote themselves to the role, I high recommend listening to Ramin Karimloo. He digs into this role far more intensely than I have ever seen or heard. Michael Crawford and Hugh Parano are definitely up there as well. I am far from a fan of Gerards singing, but I have always commended the emotion he puts into the role. But when you get actors who possess both, it just sends chills up your spine. I totally recommend giving any of the three a listen or all. It will be worth the time.
Ive watched a couple versions of POTO, & others may not agree with me, but I feel like Gerard was an AMAZING Phantom & I feel the reason for that is because he didn’t have a musical theatre background, so he took the role seriously & went full blown into it. The result was a very passionate & intense delivery where you could feel how invested he was in taking an iconic figure & putting his stamp on it, while honoring the understanding that people had of the phantom. Whereas those with the opera vocal chops had to do more with the acting side; which is a combination of vocal & physical convincing. I feel like so many phantoms that I see fall flat in comparison to Gerard’s clearly passionate performance.
I heard that Andrew hand picked gerard for the role, because he liked the rock edge to his voice, and had always wanted it to have a rock edge. Gerard gave it that in spades!
Jana Snowdon right & Gerard didn’t even have a vocal training background! He just had a very mailable vocal skill that came natural & what they did give him by way of any training worked really well with the role.
I really feel bad for Joel. His name is often attached to flops, but it seems like any of them were hardly his fault. If you just watch this movie, without any bias towards the stage production, it’s very easy to see that he was quite a talented and passionate man with a very unique eye for filmmaking. And it looks like here that the whole cast and crew genuinely enjoyed working with him. I certainly would have.
It was made the year before I was born and I’ve been watching it ever since my mom made me watch it when I was a baby, lol. When I was 4, I was terrified to look in the mirror because I thought the phantom might appear. 😂😂
He really doesn’t, the ending still breaks my heart even after a decade of watching this movie. Gerard’s emotional range while acting is insanely good, and his crestfallen, teary eyes make my chest ache every time 😭💗
The Phantom of the Opera is a story from light and shadow and darkness. Christine's love changed him. The Phantom became a better man, for quite a while
Though I've seen the Broadway production numerous times, I much prefer the movie..it is exquisite! It might be my personal love for Gerard Butler, but, he made the role of the Phantom his own. Portrayed with enormous passion, and yet, bringing an entirely different nuance to the role, he was outstanding! Kudos to Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson and Minnie Driver..the entire cast was absolute perfection. I could watch this movie every day, and never tire of it. Thanks to the great Andrew Lloyd Weber and genius Joel Schumacher (RIP). POTO forever!! 🤗❤️🌹
I can't believe its been 12 years since it's release in 2004! And soon in 1 month and 42 days it'll have been here for over 12 years and 11 months. I wonder when its next anniversary is? This movie is quite charming and I own it on dvd and the only way I knew it exited was from middle schools which was like 11 years ago and I instantly fell in love with and was able to get it when it had been out on DVD. Its one of those movies where you can just watch it over and over again and always have a smile on your face like I do. :)
@@TennesseeAnderson I have it on DVD and I love it so much, in 2024 it's gonna be 20 years since this movie was made and I hope it will have a 20th Anniversary DVD release.
Every time I watch this movie I am moved and feel something very intenseOne of my all time favorite movies. While I have never seen all the other versionsOf this story, which I would like to someday, i still think this will be my favorite :0)
When I was little my parents watched this late at night just below my bedroom and I was annoyed it was keeping me awake, but ended up watching it with them. Now I find the music so comforting that I use it to fall asleep. Love this musical forever and always
This movie is amazing! I was pretty much raised on Phantom of the Opera, when this movie premiered in 2004, my mom and I saw it on Christmas Eve and when we came out of the theater it was snowing (which is rare in Houston). Love this movie, I love this musical so much!
I discovered it back in 2004 also. When it was 1st aired in channel 23 and I was 7 at the time. I can only understand parts of the movie but I managed to finish it and like it (because of Christine's voice and beauty) now I'm 23. And it's still my favorite along with Pan's Labyrinth.
Gorgeously done film! ------I loved it, & to me Emmy is Christine--------Gerard is the best Phantom-------& Patrick Wilson is perfect as Raoul. ------------------Beautifully filmed, atmospheric, & irresistible. ---------------------------WolfSky9, 72 y/o
It is my favorite musical movie of all time Emmy Rossum, Gerard Butler, and Patrick Wilson did a great job in their performances, the film is beautiful especially wonderfully beautiful sets and costumes, amazing music and songs, and great cinematography and editing.
I watched Phantom of the Opera on Broadway for the first time 12/22/2019... I was floored. Absolutely hit with so much emotion. Incredible!!! Theater live and movie. Just so much emotion! So much quality talent!
I had no idea for a long time she was 16! I saw this when I was really little. She’s amazing in shameless too guys if you’re looking for a good show. She’s outstanding with her emotions and acting and of course her beauty is out of this world! I knew her through this movie and I’m glad she’s still Acting. My favorite actress for sure.
Ok guys I need help I've seen all of the phantom videos on RU-vid like seriously I'm NOT JOKING and I have and seen all of the movies of all of the types of phantom movies I have the phantom mask and I have pictures and posters all over my room and I have a phantom shirt plus I've memorized all of the songs and can sing them by heart and without even having the movie or the musical on I can say all of the lines of the movie and act it out in my room so that's what I do when I don't watch the movie cause it's the same thing except it's just me and there's no other good voices cause mines like terrible I just LOVE PHANTOM ITS MY LIFEEEEEE Oh and you also can't forget the FABULOUS MUSICAL
3:38 I yated my yatte ! Minnie Driver should at least getting nominate for this film.. They done teriffic job for gathering all the right ensembles for this masterpiece ... Gerard, Emmy, Patrick, Minnie, Miranda etc gave outstanding performances! I am so glad I get the 3-dics special box vcd set when it comes out. Because where I live, it is impossible to attend the play. Those are my beloving treasure forever
AND OMG YAAAAAAAAAASSSS HIS VOICE IS SO GOOD. IDC WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS, HIS VOICE IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND TO THINK HE HAD ZERO VOCAL TRAINING BEFORE THIS.
I think Andrew Lloyd Webber did an amazing job on the music. I think he’s a great person who does the music. I’ve never seen the movie before. I think they did great 👍 and wonderful.
My first ever experience of phantom was at a very early age when it aired on TV in black and white. Was lost in its amazement of the content. When this version came out, my children were taken in by the songs and the film took them to the limit of appreciation of the movie. Totally smitten from the first note ❤❤❤
The fact that I’m the same age that Emmy is while she filmed this movie is actually insane! It really gives me a perspective of how young she really was and how crazy filming the love triangle must’ve been 😍😫
I never saw more than a couple scenes from the movie since it’s orig release , but knew a couple songs. The other day I saw an action move w/Gerry in it & told my mom & he can sing too. It made me think of this,so went bought dvd on eBay & finally saw entire movie. I think some of the overture is played too much but loved it & Ger. Since 2019 was 15 years they should re-release movie w/Gerrys deleted scene/song “no one would listen” added in.
In order, my most loved musicals/operas are Phantom of the Opera, Cats, and Les Miserables. When I started learning piano the music for all 3 were a must. Always wanted to see the Phantom get the girl in the end but just like life, life isn't always fair. I've seen a lot of...not necessarily hate...but distaste for Gerard as the phantom, I personally think he nailed it. He brought to it a sort of grit that you would find in a real situation.
After hearing other singers, I can't stand a guys voice being higher pitched than Gerard's in "The Phantom of the Opera" tbh although they are all amazing opera singers
Keep working on it! It’s good your starting young and the only mistake you can do now is to stop practicing. Starting young and progressing until your mid 20s will definitely get you into Phantom, just don’t give up! I’m not in Phantom, and I never sang or performed, so you have a higher chance to get in than me, but I hope to make the stage one day!
Vì por primera vez la pelìcula por el canal TCM Latinoamèrica en el año 2014 y me encantò y ahora soy una de sus fans...como me gustarìa qu e hubiese un reestreno para verla en cine en tiempo real...amo a mi fantasma.
