Behringer D vs MiniMoog Model D Reissue - Synth Shootout
After finally receiving the Behringer D or Model D that was preordered way way back in June 2017 it finally arrived yesterday! To kick things off I wanted to do a Synth Shootout vs the real deal, a Moog MiniMoog Model D Reissue! I have pulled out the MiniMoog's user manual and configured a few patches on both synthesizers and played some tunes. Please forgive me, I'm not the greatest live synth player, but I thought this might be cool to line these synths up so to speak let folks hear what it sounds live vs the real thing.
For those who don't know what all of the fuss is about, the MiniMoog Model D is one of the most famous synthesizers of all time, it's quite expensive. Recently Moog Music reissued this iconic synth after many years of being out of production for a cost of around $3,500.00 USD. All good right? That had my attention and I was able to pick one up, but then about a year or so ago Uli Behringer made several posts referring to a possible Behringer version of the MiniMoog. Then came some pix of what one might look like and it about broke the internet when the Behringer D might cost around $300.00 USD! That's around 1/10th the cost of the new reissue from Moog. So yeah there was some interest in this thing.
Personally I think for the price the Behringer D does a pretty good job, but please realize that with synthesizers like this you can spend hours dialing in these patches, which I did :) but given more time it may be possible to get these to sound even closer than they do in this video.
Bottom line, this new synth from Behringer is a great value regardless. Let me know what you think!
Like what I do? Have a look at some other vids on my channel and maybe subscribe if you feel like it!!

Even if I had Moog money I still wouldn't get one. I mean, wayyyyyyyyyyyy overpriced and very limited in sound creation. Moog really has only 1 plus: it kicks serious bottom ass. But I am not willing to pay a few grand for that as there are options to get that from other machines too. Take the Behringer and tweak it a little. With some EQ you'll get the remaining few % the Moog has more.

The fact that you can use a Mini patch sheet with the Boog and get a sound that’s so close is pretty impressive.

One thing that caught my ear is how much darker the sound from the moog is compared to berhinger. Both sound good to me can't wait for mine to arrive this week. Thanks for taking the time to make this dude it's awesome to hear both programmed the same and the subtle difference
@MarshalArnold

Yeah, I think the MiniMoog is a bit smoother, and the Boog's oscillators have a bit more "buzz" it's pretty minor, but the main thing is they did a good job on the filter, it's really great sounding on the Boog.

I really appreciate you doing this. It's great to hear them back to back. I imagine that if you tweaked the Behri a little more, you could probably get a sound that's near exact to the Moog's patches you set up. As you mentioned in the beginning of the video, even two Minimoog's next to each other won't likely sound the EXACT same with the same settings. So ... in one way, the shootout is great to see/hear. But for the people saying "the Moog sounds $3,000 better!," I think they would be easily fooled in a blind listening test if you just used your ears when matching the sounds as opposed to setting every knob the same on both machines. Again, though ... thanks for doing this!

Thanks for the comparison. For 1/10th the cost, its insanely good. For somebody like me who has never really been a “Moog guy”, these Mini clones are a great option. I wish there was a tad more CV control, but overall, I don’t see how this will not he sitting in the middle row of my eurorack setup. I’be sold off a lot of my euro stuff, because I always seem to just use the single synth voices more (Atlantis, Tonestar).....so this would give me semimodular Moog, Arp, and Roland. Good times. These are all basically sold out, huh? Guess I’ll have to preorder round 2. I have eurorack filters that cost more than this synthesizer. Ridiculous.

Honestly, as I was reading comments and heard a clip that sounded a bit 'better' to my ears, every time I scrolled to the top, it was the Behringer. Kind of spooky. Granted, that's through the magic of RU-vid compression, my earbuds, etc. I really like that you used MIDI to keep the 'performance' variables down between the two. Nice work.

On the fence about pre-ordering one. One one hand, it seems like overkill given what I already have (Euro, Sub37, etc.). On the other hand, 3 osc for $300, O.O Were they in stock, I'd have already 'impulse' bought one. The idea of waiting a few months more . . .

Behringer did a great job and I'd certainly buy it for the price factor. I can hear the difference (barely) and it's really just a matter of the weight or tubb-i-ness. Sort of like the difference between have the Slate VCC Neve summing engaged or not on my mix. There's just a certain weight added by the Moog. Notice I didn't say a certain weight "missing" from the D. It sounds great and with a solid channel input or a little software added into the signal flow, I wouldn't be able to tell at all. Thank for taking the time to do this.

Oh sure thing, I'll try to get a vid in the next few weeks. I can say that all 3 of these have something to offer. The SE-02 has some different sounding wave forms, along with built-in effects, save able presets, cross mod and a sequencer. The "Boog" has a 2 mode filter, High and low pass (which I didn't even touch in this video) a mod depth adjustment for the extra LFO, separate switches to independently control filter decay and or loudness decay and it's semi modular and is euro rack mountable. And for the MiniMoog, well the MiniMoog.. is the real deal and if you are in the market and have the cash I would say it's worth every penny,

HI! I am wondering if the Model D will fit into a Two Tier Mother 32 Rack. They look the same size. I had 2 mother 32 modules and decided to return one of them for something else. Now I have a 2 tier rack with only one mother 32. Can you see if the Model D can fit before I buy one :)

Rey Barr it’s wider than the Mother 32, so no, unless you get the wider 104hp cases that Moog makes for those racks.

I am trying to figure out the Panel Differences between the Behringer Model D (BD) and the Minimoog (MM). From what I can tell the things the MM has that the BD doesn't is a Built-in Keyboard (of course), a Pitch Wheel and a Master On/Off Switch for the Glide (Portamento). The MM Modulation Depth Wheel became the BD Modulation Depth Knob (the only MIDI overridable control on the panel, assuming your MIDI Keyboard has Mod. & Pitch Wheels), The MM Decay Switch (on Left Cheekblock) has been replaced by the Filter and Amplitude Decay Switches in the Mix/Mod Switch row. Some MM's have an extra Knob in the Cheekblock instead of the Two Jacks. The BD exclusive feature are the Filter Pass Low/High Switch on top of the Mix/Mod Switch row and the additions in the Lower Left corner (bottom of the Controllers Section). Additions to the Controllers Section (besides the aforementioned Mod Wheel location) are: The Osc 3/Filter EG Switch The Noise (Mod Src)/LFO Switch Added LFO- Waveform Switch LFO Rate Knob

I just got my Model D last week and and it is fantastic how good it sounds. For the price it is an absolute no brainer. Sounds as deep as my Moog Prodigy or my Prophet 5 or OB-Xa. It is the real analog deal! Using the Arturia iMini iPad app, I was surprised how close the app came to the original hardware. Got to get some props to Arturia for their emulation. I suppose it's not that shocking considering Bob Moog himself did give Arturia a ringing endorsement of their TAE technology. All the presets that come with the app and the software versions from Arturia are also great programming sources for the Model D. Now if they actually make the UB-Xa, I can take those sounds sounds out and play them live instead of the emulations I have to settle for now. I don't tour with my Prophet or Oberheim. Those machines are too valuable, not to mention temperamental for the road. Great comparison video.
@MarshalArnold
@MarshalArnold 6 лет назад
Yeah the Arturia MiniV is really nice. In a lot of cases I'll program up patches in the Arturia plugin (because it's a bit faster) and then when I'm happy will recreate it on the MiniMoog. Most of the time when I've done this they are really close.
@dennisristow2102
@dennisristow2102 6 лет назад
That makes a lot of sense. Being able to save and recall makes it easier to compare sound designs. Certainly a lot easier than the old paper sounds sheet blanks in the back of the manual to save (hand write) presets. LOL

I used the Arturia in my band on my laptop. It sounds great and is much more convenient to have one laptop that replaces several synths at gigs. Since I'm very happy with this solution, do you think the new Behringer Model D would really offer me any benefits over using the software? I'm fine with assigning knobs on my controller keyboard. Would this really offer me any advantages in terms of the sound quality, or pretty much about the same?
@n8goulet

Marshal, Have you tried out the OP-X II software synth?
@dennisristow2102
@dennisristow2102 6 лет назад
I've had the OP-X II for a few years now and it is pretty good. There are comparison videos on their web page comparing an original OB-X to the software and they sound quite close considering. The ability to vary the voices with virtual trim pots goes a long way to true emulation. The voices in my Prophet 5 and OB-Xa have slight tolerance differences that the software emulates. Not the cheapest VST but there is a free player version on their web page that can load in all the sounds they have created so you can test drive the synth engine. You just can't edit or save anything.
@dooldriverr
@dooldriverr 6 лет назад
Very Good. I never thought about using other synths patches to set up a different one. I will give that a try for the fun of it. Maybe even cross patching to the virtual synths. I have a bunch of both always looking for sounds for all of them. I am not allowed to buy anymore synths or keyboards of any kind per my wife. LOL

@TooSlowTube

Excellent idea, Marshal. I hadn't thought to look for Minimoog patches. The User Manual is a good start too - I found it on the manualslib website. I expect there are a lot more out there. Does the shorting plug in the trigger input work on the Behringer - to give infinite sustain, while you fiddle with knobs? Cross patching from other analog synths is a great idea too, Gary. They all have more in common than they have differences. Maybe just tell your wife you need a new ladder filter, because yours had gone wrong, then look surprised at how big the one they sent you was, and how many knobs it's got :)

I just realized for the price of a Mother 32 I can buy a Behringer Model D and the Neutron, I'm glad I waited. Having the Behringer Model D and the Neutron work great together. 5 oscillators running thru either the Moog filter or the Neutron multi mode filter, or together in series, with the dedicated Neutron LFO and all the envelopes is trippy. Especially with different slow glide settings on the two units gives really nice slop and movement. :) I was so happy with this setup that when some retailers recently had their Behringer synths on sale for a little over $200, I grabbed another Neutron just to expand the additional LFO and envelopes to a very complex modular with just 3 full blown synths that cost less than $1k, including a Keystep to play it all. Bonus to go into the computer editor and set them up as 3 voice polyphonic.

There is a difference in the sound of the synths, but to honestly say one is "better" than the the other is highly subjective. On some patches I like the sound of the Moog, but on others I prefer the Model D ....................... which is absolutely crazy, I did not expect it to be like this at all ........................... this is my first ever listening to the Model D, so this is why I am gobsmacked. I used to own a Moog Li'L Phatty and absolutely loved the sound of it ........................... but for £ $ 300 the Behringer is freaking mad good value. PS Thank you so much for an awesome video Marshal ! :)

Listening to the Sawyer patch, you can tell that the panel settings of both differ slightly, most likely due to calibration which could be ironed out. The sound itself is not the same due to how much more open the filter and AoC is in play on the behringer. What would have been a better side by side test is to calibrate the Behringer to fit the reissue mini, then record the notes in to the daw via midi and send it to both, then do a side by side crossing of the volumes for each phrase and octave and once for the over all line. Still, an OK comparison that shows that even in the basic form, the Behringer D can hold it's own and isn't a million or even a hundred miles away. I've had both side by side myself in a friends studio and they sound (his and the behringer d when calibrated to it) very close, if not damn spot on.
@MarshalArnold
@MarshalArnold 6 лет назад
Hi Chris! Yeah I have since calibrated the Behringer via the steps in the manual and adjusting the Osc Range and Scale for each oscillator. It did make a difference. (my MiniMoog is properly calibrated already) Have a new video posted on the calibration process. I will be doing another comparison vid soon, I'll take your feedback and play a pre-sequenced set of notes and A-B the synths and show wave shapes via an oscilloscope. They are much closer now than in this vid, but I agree, even with my ear tuning these it was pretty close on most patches. Panel settings set the same would show a difference with the Behringer since it was out by about 2 semitones initially. Patches like the Sawyer patch require detuning of Osc 2 and 3 so this compounds the problem in a patch like that with the it being out of calibration. Tonight I was playing around with these following the calibration and yeah, much closer :)
@ChrisLongR16
@ChrisLongR16 6 лет назад
No worries mate, just thought I would point it out. There are a lot of comparison videos popping up but most forget to calibrate the Miniboog thus showing a greater difference than there really is. Also as said, it's no surprise that there will be some differences in the panel settings, the Boog is a clone, for the most part, but it doesn't use EXACTLY all the same components, as such there will be a slight variance....is it a £3000+ variance? naa, I don't think so at all.
@kylecoltrane4269

This comparison would have been much closer if the Boog's oscillators were in tune
@MarshalArnold
@MarshalArnold 6 лет назад
Hey kyle, I tried to match these up as best I could by ear. In some of the patches the Boog sounds different despite me testing each oscillator one by one. That said the boog does need some calibration it is 1-2 semitones out from the factory. Once I figure out how that process works and get it dialed in I may post another vid. but I was able to get these pretty close despite this and would say the Boog is a great value.
@TransistorBased
@TransistorBased 6 лет назад
This is all assuming the Moog reissue has the same sound fidelity as the original. But for $300, I'm definitely gonna get the model D. You'd be stupid not to. The differences are pretty subtle, and it's all freaking analog. The next best analog for $300 is the Monologue, and it's got neat features, but it's mono with so-so VCO and VCF.

does D have pitch tracking issues or are you just incapable of tweaking it to sound similar

Once I properly tuned this unit the pitch tracking was fine (see that video here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nrZdzyMyr6I.html ). The only differences I could find when doing the technical comparison vid was that the pulse waves on the Behringer are a bit over driven and the pots (likely because they are smaller than the MiniMoog) is fet 1 to 1 or the exact same numerical position did not sound the same, but you can tweak by ear and get thins to sound very very close!

Wow there isnt alot in diffrence the Boog defo has a meaty bottom end and that top end clarity. Thanks for this Marshal, an extra like from me man 👍. Maybe if you get time do Behringer D vs Se 02 and then a 3way face off .
@MarshalArnold
@MarshalArnold 6 лет назад
Adamski A. Yup, you can get it pretty close i was suprised for sure. I think they nailed the filter. Still not 100% though, some of the patches were a bit off, that could be some tuneing in the Behringer possibly or maybe something different in the mixer section. The 3-Squares patch sounded more like unison vs how the Mini sounded. The main thing is it has the character for sure and for bass it will get the job done for easy. Behringer vs Roland vs Moog? hellz yeah! Only thing is with the SE-02 because of the inverted pulse squares they don't sound anything like the waves on the MiniMoog or the Behringer clone, so can't really do a patch shootout between them, well I could but the SE-02 will be way off lol, but I could, just for grins and see what happens. Really want to do some filter comparisons with simple waves, I really think Behringer got that ladder right and that's huge!
@AdamTheAd-vanc3d
@AdamTheAd-vanc3d 6 лет назад
Marshal Arnold Yes i guess thou in a context of mix of track the diffrence would be neglible. Btw what is like for staying in tune ?
@MarshalArnold
@MarshalArnold 6 лет назад
Yeah and for 300.00 it's really really good. Tune wise to make this video I had it on for a few hours and it was fine.. but most of that time was figuring out the damn patches from the patch sheets and then going back and forth between the 2. I had to on a few occasions when shit sounded weird go 1 by on through the oscillators and make some minor tweaks to the Behringer fine tuning, but that's not surprising to me. The only thing is if I didn't have the real deal i think it might have been off. Will need to check out how to tune it better, from the factory it sounds a bit off maybe by 1 or 2 semitones. But drift wise I think it was solid.

Yeah, to my ears the Boog has more "buzzy" sounding oscillators.. and the MiniMoog is much more smooth. Also some differences in the Squares when stacking the Oscillators.. just a slightly different flavor, but same character. Both will have a place in my studio :)

Excellent. I'll look forward to it. I watched your tuning the oscillators video. I'm a bit surprised they didn't fit multi turn presets, but it doesn't seem too hard. I've been meaning to have a go at tuning my Korg Odyssey module a bit better - the fine tune sliders have to be a few mm apart to get unison, on mine. Apparently, it can all be done by taking some little rubber bungs out, from the main panel. I still haven't worked up the courage to do it yet though. Incidentally, I use the ClearTune app as my tuner. It's a bit easier to read than that free one you used. There's an Android version and a slightly better iOS version, but they're both good, and worth the small amount they cost.

Maybe it's just me but when Moog starts playing I feel pins and needles (especially low notes). Behringer is a fun toy but it's not that close to Moog. I like the possibility to play with the original panel but I wonder if the iPad app is not slightly better than this.

@@Lamster66 i said i'm no gear snob, that's why i own the Behringer D and the Neutron too as i think they're decent monosynths in their price class. Personally I don't use software so ipads aren't an option, and i can't afford 3k so the original is no option either. But I still know what my ears tell me: the Minimoog sounds weightier, more present, than the Behringer. You can't replicate that with EQ'ing lesser synths. Presence is simply there. That doesn't make the Behringer not worth buying as it sounds good and has nice controls, but it does make the Minimoog worth buying if you have the cash to splash, as it simply sounds better. THe comparison might be more accurate if you'd tuned the Behringer osc 2 to be at precisely the same pitch as osc one - as you've done with the Moog. Kinda renders comparisons a bit useless since there's beating, between osc one & two on the Behringer, but none on the Moog. Only a thought....
@MarshalArnold
@MarshalArnold 4 года назад
Yeah, when I did these I went by the #s on the patch sheet, the values are different between the synths (maybe due to pot size? IDK for sure) and is why there is some variation wich I think is fair to demo as it shows that the patch sheets should be updated for the Boog. Most folks would not have a real MiniMoog ext to them to match pitch to and get them to sound the same, though you are right if I cheat the numbers on the Boog it can get pretty spot on to the MiniMoog.

Actually, as I mentioned I tuned the Behringer to the MiniMoog and initially set the synths up just like the patch sheets. In some cases the sounds were damn near identical. with others I went oscillator by oscillator (soloing each one) to make sure tuning ect was correct and sometimes the sounds were still different, not much I can about the fact that they don't always sound 100%. Ultimately, to me the MiniMoog does "sound better" but the point of this video is to see how close a $300.00 clone came to a legendary premium synth that's 10 times the price.

For monos, I have a Voyager XL, Sub37 & my Minimoog Model D reissue arrives next week. I think this sounds amazing for $300! There are slight minor sonic differences which could also make it worth adding. It will certainly appeal to traveling musicians as it suffices nicely to most peoples ears. Also to those on a tighter budget or wishing to spread budget over wider variety of synths. Probably a smart thing to do! Slightly off, but still on topic, I think there is a common misconception about the Moog line ups, IMO. The Model D is a model D, the Voyager is a Voyager, the Sub series is it’s own thing & so too the phattys & mothers. They all have slightly different sonic characteristics & modulation abilities. You will enjoy them more if not trying to compare/ fault them. They all make me smile :) Thing is, decide what you like, best suits your needs & run with it! I’d never sell my Jupiter 6 with self installed Europa, would love a Jupiter 8! But, budget is drained. Maybe a Modal 008 if the money tree flowers. So many cool synths these days! Including cheaper Korgs & more expensive DSI/ sequential series. I guess it’s how we use them that counts. I’ve personally decided for now to run with a few I love & try to explore their full potential. We are truly blessed with choice which can also be a curse! Lol Thanks for the comparison!

why al those comparising, just enjoy whatever you use. even if it is a vst,
@TooSlowTube
@TooSlowTube 6 лет назад
Okay. I'll bite. It's because this IS meant to be a clone of the Minimoog Model D, but for the masses. Even at UK retail (rip off) prices, this costs less than a tenth what the reissue Minimoog does. Sure, there's no keyboard included, but most of us already own one, and a few of us don't even want one, apparently. There's no wallnut cabinet included either, but I could make my own, if I really felt the need. So, a comparison with a Model D is important to some, because it reassures us that we're spending our pennies wisely. A comparison to other Model D "inspired" synths (e.g. Roland SE-02) that we might be able to afford, is valid too - because maybe we can only afford one of them (for now), and are still wondering which to buy. Or, maybe we just enjoy drooling over other people's synths. That can be fun too, and is even cheaper.
@klaasj7808
@klaasj7808 6 лет назад
what do you bite. i want to say there is no reason to compare. what if the moog sounds better. who cares. that model d is a nice piece. I use a VST with a midi controller, sounds just as great. nobody can hear that i use a vst hah.
@TooSlowTube
@TooSlowTube 6 лет назад
I agree, the Behringer is good, but I don't have one, so the only way I know that is from videos like this one. It's supposed to be a copy of a Model D. If it didn't sound something like a Model D, it would fail at that, wouldn't it? I agree that VSTs can sound good, but they never convince me that I'm playing a real instrument. I don't enjoy playing them nearly as much, and that's all that matters, to me. Here's a question - why watch a comparison video then ask why make a comparison video? :)
@klaasj7808
@klaasj7808 6 лет назад
I agree that its more fun to play with the real deal. But when i bought a polysix 20 years ago and some other stuff my money was gone haha. So i started playing around with some VSTs like 15 years ago. ARP2600 i cant buy, are 10.000 used. Now i have my own, running on a Raspbian and build a Wooden casket with all the knobs and connected it to a arduino, so i can control the VST. its amazing and only spent like 100. Because most was 2nd hand parts i removed from junk equipment.
@TooSlowTube
@TooSlowTube 6 лет назад
That sounds like a fun project. Physically having the knobs and sliders in your hands is definitely part of it. I've tried a few ARP Odyssey VSTs - just free ones, which were good enough to get an idea of how to patch an Odyssey. I was able to look like I almost knew what I was doing when I tried the Korg one in a shop. I bought the Korg Odyssey module, in the end. It's a lot more satisfying than the VSTs.

The Sawyer = Bass patch @4:00 really shows the biggest difference to me. The Behringer, to my ears, sounds like garbage, while the Moog sounds rich, deep, and all the other good stuff. I feel like for someone who doesn't want to spend the cash on the Moog, Monark is probably a better choice, since it doesn't take up desk space.
@synthesizerhome2041

you detuned the Behringer oscillators much more than on the Minimoog, so it's not really possible to compare
@MarshalArnold
@MarshalArnold 5 лет назад
Is actually not that I detuned anything, the Boog came this way. In addition the pots on the Boog are not the same as the MiniMoog, so when making adjustments "by the numbers" using MiniMoog patch sheets does mean sounds at those values there are different in the timber between each synth. With that said, I later manually tuned the Boog, and confirmed this. You can most def get the Boog to sound nearly identical to the Mini, but to do so you would literally have to have a Mini to match the Boog to. It really just needs it's own patch sheets. Behringer did a great job IMO.

The Moog is certainly fatter/fuller than the 'Boog' (love that name!), but you'd be hard pressed to notice that in a live situation, and in the studio some minor tweaks (slight tube overdrive maybe?) can bring the Behringer closer to the Moog. And again, you'd be hard pressed to notice it in the mix. No way I'm spending 4-5 Gs on a Model D, so I see a 'Boog' in my future!

I spent most of the evening tonight with a tuner and going back and forth between the Boog and the Moog, each oscillator pretty spot on, yet when you stack the waves there are differences, even with the tune. Its going to be pretty much impossible to get these 100% the same and honestly wouldn't expect them to be. Ultimately is not a big deal, the thing is 300.00 and gets darn close. Will do another vid soon showing what I mean. Lol, I'll take the deep dive even if its really is splitting hairs. 👍😎👌

It's funny how people complain about the Voyager's filter not opening up all the way yet 99.9% of all synth patches close the filter down. Bob designed it that way for a reason and I think he was right. Unfiltered oscillators aren't very musical. I personally like the sound of the Voyager better than the reissued D.

+Shane Sterling I have a MiniMoog Voyager and it's a good sounding synth for sure. Indeed it's not as 'raw' sounding as the original Model D can be. But for bass it's actually great. It's very smooth sounding with a powerful low-end. The Behringer could actually be a nice companion. It's not quite as good for bass as the Voyager, but it does have the rawness of the original D and can do some bright solo sounds closer to the original Model D than the Voyager could.

All great points! I would say that the Boog is better for sure to gig with and the added CV does lent itself to integration with modular synths, though the re-issue MiniMoog I have in the video also has a few CV options as well. As far as sound, you are correct exact 1:1 knob settings does give different results, most likely due to the size differences in the pots I'm guessing. Some variation exists from synth to synth anyway because well, that's how it is with analog as you mentioned. Behringer did a far better job with this than I expected and I'm anxiously awaiting what comes next from them :)

The Beringer D is the new poor man's Minimoog and it's close in places. Therefore, it's great value for the money. But the overall sound quality is for sure inferior compared to the original D. With Moog you pay for the big name, yes, but also the parts and circuit are way more expensive. The difference in sound quality becomes most obvious if you compare the filter and bass sound. Not even the Voyager sounds as good as the Model D in that respect. That gritty, fat sound of the Model D is only surpassed by the Moog modular system.
