Last month, we began our foray of expanding What's Underneath to all corners of the earth by taking the project to Los Angeles.
The first to share their truth is 25-year-old Caitlin Stasey, an Australian actress in Hollywood who has harnessed her anger against the systematic sexism of the film and television industries into a force of uncensored activism.
Thank you to Daniela London, of Choose Love, for providing us with space to shoot all of our Los Angeles episodes and to Olie Biologique, a natural skincare line, for making it possible for us to share Caitlin's story.
As a part of our collaboration with Olie, six strong, unapologetic individuals from the project have made their own Olie body oils based on their spirit and stories.
Go here to get your oil: oliebiologique.com/product-cat...
Caitlin's episode was edited by Andrea Cruz

I recognize that line now that you pointed it out, but you still shouldn't post something like that on a serious video like this, or at least put parentheses and reference Mean Girls. I have watched the movie but I didn't memorize every line lol. The only one I would know off the bat would be "on Wednesdays we wear pink"

I like how aware she is. She's not asking for so much, she recognizes her privilege, and she's very rational. A lot of comments are criticizing her for her privilege, but she recognizes it. She's just talking about an inequality that is apparent in her industry, and she does it respectfully and with class. Props to her. Also I enjoy her use of the word "fuck"

You put that so well! She's so self-aware and sincerely intelligent. I love this conversation, so interesting that people we constantly consider better off than the rest of us for superficial reasons aren't actually necessarily going to be *happier* than us, or feel better treated than us. It's important that everyone understands their privileges, but it's also important to let people who are privileged acknowledge their valid problems too.

"People think beauty opens doors, but it opens doors to cliff edges," I adore that line, beauty is so freeing yet so restricting in different ways. You can't be more than beautiful to a lot of people, because people will project onto you what they want you to be not thinking you have a voice or opinions etc. I do love this x

I love how undefensive she is. She understands that she is much more well off than others, being white and beautiful and wealthy. She knows that she has a higher privilege, and she admits it. There are people out there instead of using their privilege for good like Caitlin, like to say they have no privilege. That they don't have it better than anyone else. They like to believe that they are the poorest, the are the saddest, they have less than anyone else, because playing a victim is easier than admitting that you haven't done anything to truly help those hat are suffering. People like Caitlin are using their pedestal to make a difference, instead of wallowing in their own guilt and self pity.

Lovely video. Fascinating that when someone only sees you for what you look like you feel invisible, it hurts. Alas when people treat you poorly for what you look like or don’t look like it hurts. Every piece of us deserves to be valued as is by us and then if you want to change something change it for you and only you.

Wow. She's very wise.. I had to pause the video a couple times to fully digest what she was saying. She speaks so eloquently about the issues related to women. It all just flows out of her in clear, perfectly formed sentences. We need more people like her on this earth. Or at least more people who are willing, as she is, to open their eyes to the social injustices of the world and actually speak out about them.

Yes Harlen, I am well aware of that. I am not too sure why you read my comment as if it were intended to be a negative one. I know that just because someone doesn't finish high school doesn't make them dumb, I was in awe of how well spoken she was and then when I heard she hadn't finished high school I was even more in awe because it just goes to show that schooling whether it be high school, college or university isn't as necessary as everyone seems to think it is. I apologize that you mistook the message I wrote and took what I said to be negative as that was not my intent. I am all about positive vibes and never intended to put something negative out there. Regardless of the misunderstanding, I hope you have a good evening.

They choose what they want to remove and keep without pressure from the photographer; this is not the case with most women sex work. They are not told how to move when they are in their underwear, they are not performing to titillate. The intention is different with these vignettes and it's very clear as compared to stripping or other sex work. Their bodies are not being used to sell products in these shots, their bodies are not cut up and shown only as parts in the shots, their voices are being heard whilst their bodies are shown in the shots, they retain their humanness. Having said that, lately I have noticed some prompting from the filmmaker about an item of clothing to remove and I think it is detracting from the point of the work.

this video is really beautiful and I'm so disappointed to see people discriminating her for having an opinion, for vocalizing her experiences which are in her case, true... She wasn't really looking for attention in a negative way, she was bringing awareness to something she has dealt with. Why must certain people compare their oppression to others, there is no competition as to whose is worse, more painful, more serious, a bigger worldwide problem etc.. Everyone is trying to "promote" self love yet we degrade people's problems that are not big enough to the rest of society or aren't relatable enough. We are so quick to write such disgusting things to the girl rather than be open minded and understanding to other people's situations

Example: If an ugly girl gets treated badly and people look at her badly just to survive she will become strong but if she bitches it over the internet no one will pay attention to her or just low % of people will do because of her looks

So fucking dissapointed in the comments, it's such a smart video with such an amazing purpose and concept. Yet people are still debating who does she look more alike or commenting on her looks, when she has just spend ten minutes talking about how looks aren't everything and clearly stating that she's not just a pretty face. It's so hard to make people think and analyze these days, people are so superficial.
@xuanius
@xuanius 8 лет назад
Maybe part of it is people trying to express their fond feelings for her by likening her to other intelligent appealing stars and the easiest way to do this would be to say "she reminds me of/is as beautiful as...so-and-so" That's what I assumed when I saw the Emma Watson comparisons. It is another conversation why we must feel the need to link a woman's intelligence with her beauty though.

No, I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. Parent's friends often seem to say "oh she's so pretty!", which is nice and I appreciate it, of course. I don't know about you, but going though all the motions of keeping your body well regulated, getting in the right amounts of exercise, doing yourself up every freaking day, this is a LOT of work lol. I guess if you feel like it's not work, you're maybe not doing as much as you could? I guess the best way I can explain is how Arnold Schwarzenegger explained it, and he said to think of your body as a piece of artwork. In the gym he would spend hours sculpting, molding everything to his exact liking. He would admire the insane amount of work he had put into himself, and that he said, was his great accomplishment. Because we THINK just anyone can be pretty, but if something so ludicrous was actually true, in a world where everyone wants to be pretty, why aren't we all? Because it's NOT easy! lol. But don't be a dork, you also NEED a good personality too lol, obviously looks aren't everything. But don't knock em. This thing called life is harder than it looks ;) Have some fun with it.

***** I'm pretty sure she picked up the British accent because the show she's most famous for starring in is 'Reign' A show that she had to put on a British accent before, besides depending on where your from some Australians sound fairly English. If you watch her tv shows and movies from when she was still just in Australian films her accent is more 'high class' and sounds somewhat close to an English one. And some people pick up accents extremely easy. I'm sure if your job required you to put on an accent for 16 hours a day 6 days a week and then practice outside of those hours and your job was located in ENGLAND you'd pick up an accent too.

Marek Jurga no, she is a good role model. The difference is being hateful and passionate. She is clearly passionate because people have treated her like she was an object. Imagine that. It's pretty terrible to have to harm yourself to look good, to feel like an object and to be described as an object. So, learn what you're talking about before you make comments.
@healthyskepticism7703
@healthyskepticism7703 7 лет назад
I have to disagree, yes maybe some man treated her as an object which can be quite uncomfortable, but she should not overgeneralise and say that society works this way or that is how mans are. She is treating all women as some kind of victims. On her interview in herself.com she made many some hatefull and emotionally immature comments that I tried to show in my different post here. Of course pretty people in our society have some privileges and are looked upon no matter if it is female or male - physical attractivness is just advantageous from time when you were born studies show that babies can detect attractivness. But to overgeneralize and make hateful comment on opposite sex that she is making is maximally immature and shows just her psychological instability. I certainly do not think that she posesses qualities of good rolemodel for young women...

I cried so much watching this video. I am called pretty by a lot of people and yesterday I got told to wear a burka instead of clothing that's tight (I was wearing joggers and a top that day). It was meant as a joke but it hit really hard. And I felt so unsecure walking home that night like I have never felt before.. My boss (a female) told me to make use of those compliments and men thinking I'm pretty and use it to sell stuff (I work in a restaurant/bar). I like compliments. everyone does. but it just got too much. Why don't we compliment hard work and effort more? It's so frustrating. Especially when friends do it. I treat them with respect and think high of them and it just doesn't feel like they realice what they are doing... thanks for sharing this video! I still need to sort through my thoughts I gues..

That was a great video, I feel like so many important topics have been tackled in a very simple, accessible manner, specially the question of a women's body and beauty being her "currency" in a very unequal and unfair trade, because beauty gives nothing but a sort of surrogate power, power "by proxy" that is temporary and double-edged. Very interesting discussion!

I've been attractive and unattractive as a women and being unattractive is worse for so many reasons. it's not like you can't have horrible problems when you are attractive but at the end of the day and when you wake up in the morning you are still attractive. I liked the line she said about beauty can open doors but it opens doors to cliffs. I think that is true but if you are smart, you can filter what opportunities your looks offer you. it's a tough world and you should use everything you are given. I don't think women who are pretty should say, oh, i'm too pretty and it's a problem or whatever. that really is ungrateful. try being unattractive. I deal with discrimination every day because I am no longer conventionally pretty. it's awful.

I found this video very interesting to watch. What was more interesting though were the comments. Why are men so defensive about their status after watching this video? This is not an attack on males. It seemed like they have watched this (or did not watch this all the way through) and had not taken anything from it. They are denying themselves an opportunity to learn, their defensiveness gets in the way of that. Not only that but they dismiss her as "Oh, just another entitled pretty white girl talking about her first world problems" or "I like what she's saying but I just hate this feminist bs" which funnily enough, shows a lot about whether they understood the video or not. Even women dismiss her, they say "if I was as pretty as her, I wouldn't complain". If this the girl in the video was say, less visually pleasing, no doubt, there would be people who would look up to or agree with her. In the video, she slowly sheds a piece of clothing along the way. People do not try to find any representation in why this was being done. What is very ironic that they call themselves intelligent but are bothered by this. They can't even deny the fact that they're doing this because she is attractive. It is a depiction of slowly becoming vulnerable. Why can't she be as proud of her body as someone with a paunch or with a Sports Illustrated body or someone with body rolls? I am addressing this because of the sheer volume of these negative and defensive comments. A video with a million views is bound to have haters but the way they try and justify their comments are, in a way, sexist. If in the end they are just going to dismiss every single thing that she is saying as petty and that she is entitled, then it says a lot about them. Considering that these may very well be the same people who say that they do not put too much on appearance while simultaneously bashing this girl for being attractive AND intelligent.

I hate when people say that I should have no problems in my life because I'm pretty. That's stupid. Good looks don't exempt a person from having a shit-tastic life. Sometimes it's more dangerous! People act as though they have a right to violate me, telling me that they act that way because they're attracted to my beauty. It's like they want a piece of me, as though I don't have a right to my own body. When I un-smilingly blow off their flirtations (not smiling and giggling is the key here), and I don't allow them to cross my boundaries, I get put into the "bitch" or "oh, you think you're too good to talk to anyone" category. It's a lose-lose situation.
@leemythic4400

What my own brother has said to me is that when people are condescending it's usually because they can't handle their own issues involving what they are trying to make you feel guilty about. Those people that say that your life must be perfect because ( your beautiful ) or whatever probably have a hard time accepting who they are. It's heart breaking when people dont see the beauty in themselves.
@virginiakettles37
@virginiakettles37 8 лет назад
+Skye ID I can't tell you how many times I thought pretty girls didn't have any real problems. Because they had beauty, the most important thing a girl could have, I always thought that it softened the blow to whatever bad things happened in their lives. But in a way, that whole concept does have some truth to it. Pretty girls get a lot more affection and sympathy when bad things happen to them. That may not entirely alleviate the issue, but it certainly helps.

Sometimes I feel like I've just spent my whole life having pieces of myself stolen from me because people want to remake me into the things they think of when they look at a pretty girl. I have the correct outer shell to be what they want me to be, so now all that's left is to scoop out the person within and replace her with an automaton.Too bad for them, I am not game for this plan.
