I have a Chinese Taiwanese background but was born in America. My parents read my diary and found out I'm a lesbian when I was a senior in hs. They did not accept me. It's been good to see fellow Asian lgbtq allies fight. I think Asian cultures are not as expressive as other cultures about this. I was moved to tears to see Taiwan take a rainbow stand. I was in disbelief as I watched queer Taiwanese people openly kiss without fear in public! This was the first time I heard such queer friendly language in Mandarin. Thanks for the inclusion

It is not "legal" for same sex marriages in Taiwan, it is simply not "illegal" for Taiwanese people. The difference is, if a Taiwanese finds a partner from Vietnam or Mainland China, then they can't get married. They would have to go to a country like Denmark to get married. This was a compromise between the progressives and the conservatives in Taiwan. It is progress, and progress is great

you parents read your diary? 🤦‍♀🤦‍♀🤦‍♀ what good parents you got. My Asian mom read my diary too and found out about my suicidal thoughts. I wrote about killing myself after my Asian father scold me so hard for not getting good grades. I also draw pictures of me killing myself with a knife, hanging from the ceiling, and drinking hand sanitizer and stuff lol. she panicked. I am also a lesbian and I told my mom and she expect me to be straight again someday. lol. My father is expecting me to get a husband and settle with kids cus he thought a woman's life will be fulfilled if only she settle with a husband and kids🤦‍♀🤦‍♀🤦‍♀ He was even writing about how he is going to lecture my future husband and stuff. They expect high grades and I did my best but they expect me to have a husband? What good parents I got. 🤦‍♀🤦‍♀🤦‍♀Even though I grew up with my candid Thai gay friends, I am still sad that I am not frank about my sexuality just because I come from a strict catholic family. I really feel you from my heart. Keep living on sis. Even if your parents don't accept you, just know that there are people who accept you.

Wow. This is such a fascinating interview. I have to thank Eileen and Chloe for their time and to wish them both the best. I initially started listening only because I'm studying Chinese and wanted to try to understand a few words from native Mandarin speakers. However, I quickly became more interested in the actual content of the conversation and stopped listening. I started reading the subtitles. My takeaway: the issues that everyday people face in modern China aren't that different from the issues faced in western countries..... Now I have to listen to it again without reading the subtitles. My sincere best wishes to Chloe and Eileen.

Being in India makes it even harder for me to come out and tell people that I'm a lesbian, in addition to China. Because many nations have this issue, as I mentioned, and we cannot hold society responsible for it. As a result, they will react negatively. We should start by changing ourselves. We have to acknowledge that a same-gender relationship is about love as much as it is about lust, sex, or time passing. People who identify as LGBT are being bullied and harshed by society, and many are reluctant to identify as such in public. It ought to be modified. Please be respectful; everyone has their own life, love, and respect.

A lot of comments here on how important the topic is, and how inspiring it is to see Chloe talk about it, and I do wholeheartedly agree, but I would like to emphasize something else, which is actually related to the main purpose of the channel: from a purely linguistic point of view, this is really great content, and in huge part due to Chloe being such an intelligent person and capable conversationalist. I feel like her command of her native language is way beyond average, and she uses a very broad set of language "tools" to express herself. This is of great value to learners, and I hope we can see more of her in the future. And one remark: I really don't feel this is intermediate level of Chinese, I'm sure there are very few foreign learners of Chinese who can understand everything, no matter how advanced they are.

*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time on desktop computers and laptops OR 25% at a time on smartphone! Access the playback speed controls as follows: *Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the lower right of the video's screen and click on the settings icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time. *Smartphones:* open the video and go to the upper right of the video's screen. You will see 3 dots. Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

This is not only good for becoming familiar with Chinese conversation style, but also very educational and insightful! I had no idea about the concept of “sham marriages” or the changes that are happening in China because heterosexual couples cannot afford to get married and have children. This gives amazing cultural insight, I would love to see more videos like this on social topics/issues and the Chinese experience! Thankyou mandarincorner

I don't understand why Chloe said her relationship is smoother than traditional Chinese families'. She both described typical Chinese fights (such as criticizing her partner for not making enough money) and also said they have gotten into physically violent altercations? Regardless, this was a very well-made video and I appreciate her sharing her story in such detail.

Everyone should be able to be happy being who they are, with who makes them happy. It seems like the biggest reason against it is people are very afraid of change and the things that challenge the social structure they are familiar with. But just like you have a right to live your life in a way that makes you happy, so does everyone else.

Interesting video. I remember, when I was travelling in China, to see many schoolgirls in pairs, as if they were best friends (I really saw many). But sometimes it was a bit hard not to think that there was something else in their relationship. So I thought maybe lesbianism is more common in China than people think.
