Many people outside of China believe that because Chinese society seems to be peaceful and harmonious, societal problems like bullying do not. But, is this entirely accurate? Eileen gets together with Sharon to discuss this issue.

@@NemoNusquam-mz2zh Maybe in all pack animals but...We are a cut above the pack animals, and it's not natural. It's natural for us to protect, guard and even sharpen our weakest link. It's unnatural for one to display violence one towards another without proper cause, and those causes make up a very small list. Especially, to the point of self destruction of one's spirit to live. This is truly a defect, and a breakdown in the fabric of the human-pack-code. Thanks for sharing...👍

I think it would be really interesting if you did a video about the Chinese education system, especially one that talks about what types of topics and classes students have to take throughout

Yes I have been bullied in school, many years ago. I was taught to always avoid fighting to walk away. But one day I was in my english class, and this bully had been bullying me and my friends for months well I had ,had enough. She did something to me all I can remember is I jumped on her and Was literally strangling her .I could hear my name being called ,it seemed like it was far off. However we both went to the office ,parents were called. My mom was surprised because she never had problems like that with me and my siblings because we were taught how to behave. And to be nice to people. I remember my mom always saying this to me ,it is nice to be important, but it is so important to be nice. So I think you learn your early lesson about life and how to treat someone at your home.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

bullying seems universal. we have it in the US as well as the UK. I had it done to me as a young student and in the workplace until i learned to stand up for myself. bullies get scared when they think you will fight back.

*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time on desktop computers and laptops OR 25% at a time on smartphone! Access the playback speed controls as follows: *Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the lower right of the video's screen and click on the settings icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time. *Smartphones:* open the video and go to the upper right of the video's screen. You will see 3 dots. Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

Thank you for sharing this video. Unfortunately, bullying is such a universal problem that, like you said, can only be reduced but not eliminated. You and Sharon made a great observation about how unexpressed feelings lead to frustration, which then results in lashing out, and also about how differences in power contribute to bullying behavior. It was interesting seeing how bullying shows itself in China.

I was bullied by students in middle and high school for being Chinese. In middle school, I was one of three ESE Asians in my grade level. I remember some close friends eventually slip up or turn on me with racist comments in certain situations. On top of that, I got bullied domestically by my older sibling and father. For them, it was more of a domination/power/ego thing in my opinion.

In Switzerland we have the exact opposite trend. With bullying being more prevalent in cities and less prevalent in rural areas.

I think you should make the subtitles available directly through youtube. In this way Language reactor or similar extensions can be used to keep track. It shouldn't be extra work. Thank you.

When I was in school in the U.S.A at age 8 about to go into my 9 th birthday. I did not speak a word of English,Spanish was my only language. I was supposed to go into the 4th grade and due to my lack of English was put back on the 3 grade. I went to an all black students school, no one and I mean no one ever bothered me. They did say things to me in summer school. I can only imagined what they must have said. All I would say was . " yes,yes " . Of course they would all laughed at me. Did it matter to me? Did anyone pushed me around in class? No no and no. After grade school went to Junior High school and then High school. No one ever bothered me. I sort of feel deprived or something. Always kept to myself, not many friends. Now that I am older I can say that people who get picked on are weak. Afraid of others. A bully sees that and that is why they picked on someone they sed as weak. Forgot to mention one incident though.I was supposed not to class since I was late. Two guys ahead of me were walking, one put out one foot and made me flip over and fell on the floor. What did I do? Got up did not even look at them and kept running .There was a door ahead the type of door that can open both sides. It did crops my mind to wait for them and push the door at both. Even up no now I still wonder why I never hit them with the door.

Humble appolgies for what im about to say. Why do I think ppl in china do fraud "能骗就骗" or other immoral actions like bullying, theft etc. 1-I have had chinese classmates/friends. It is my opinion that cultural revolution, since the moral values in old days were based on some culture/relgion. By destroying that culture, moral values got stripped away along with the religion and culture. Now those morals values havent been replaced? 2-Urbanisation and moral values. I also feel that villagers do have some moral values, but when they move into cities away from parents so they no longer have elders to teach them moral values, they face moral dilemmas, destroying there moral compass.

At some points it's gut wrenching hearing about people suffering in such horrible ways as described in the video. On the other hand, I do think that talking about China's problems too instead of just focusing on the positives as pretty much every standard textbook does makes learners care more about China and the Chinese and brings them closer. Meanwhile I agree that tagging this one as 'intermediate' is not very accurate, there is plenty of stuff that even experienced learners of Chinese are not familiar with, and the fact that a solid bit of it is colloquial rather than literary or official style doesn't make it easier. I notice a particular use that I'm not very used to, adding personal pronouns right after the subjects: 我的朋友她被欺负了 一个一直欺负人的人他有一种优越感 很多霸凌的人他是自我正义化的 (I'd expect to encounter 他们 here rather than 他, maybe someone can explain why I'm wrong?) Is this a new trend? Is it really used this often or are Eileen and Sharon overusing it a bit in this conversation?

your videos are wonderful! re the "Xiao san" - why not a word about the husband? why no mention of a man who interferes with a woman's marriage? somehow in every case, the men get off scot free.

My beautiful brother John Cena 3556, do not be bound by terms made to dissemble your mind such as intermediate. Such a thing does not exist. Go forth then, into the abyss of truth and join your mind with ear, allowing your body to accept it. Before you know it, you will be conversing with 习近平 in perfect mandarin as 毛泽东 watches from a distance with tears flowing from his eyes into yours 😢❤

I feel your pain, it's been many years I've been listening to this channel and I agree it's much more than an intermediate level. But at the same time it's really easier than many other podcast. When I try to listen to news in Chinese I feel I don't understand anything, while I can understand more or less these podcasts.
