4 years later and I'm still pulling my hair out over how Wondolowski blew that chance

I still remembet that game. Belgium missed a ton of goals, and Tim Howard had a performance for the ages, but USA had the best chance in the final minute of regulation. When Wondolowski missed that chance I almost broke my TV set.

This was the last WC game my dad and I watched the USA play. We were excited to watch this year’s WC and even planned on going to a game in 2026, but he sadly passed away in January. This will be my first WC without him, and it pains me that we didn’t watch our country play at least one more game together.

Being a USA fan this game was an emotional rollercoaster

I remember Tim Howard was a cover star in Fifa 15 cause of his perfomance in this match lol. What a great year 2014 was :)

I saw this game. When I saw the team sheet, I know what the Belgian coach is doing. USA couldn't keep up with the pace of the Ghanaians so he kept Lukaku on the bench. When the American hamstrings are about to snap from fatigue, he unleashed Lukaku. He had an assist and a goal. Brilliant Tactics.

So they took Wondolowski instead of Donovan? Is that right?

This game proves that Tim Howard is a legend. One of the greatest goalkeepers of the modern era. Underrated at times if you ask me.

Even though we lost that day, that was the proudest I ever felt watching the US play; they just refused to yield to an obviously better team. That group had grit..

The fact that wondolowski was called back after this game made my head hurt.

I can see in Wondo's face how much that missed hurt him, yet he kept playing. He made a perfect pass to Dempsey for what could have easily tied the match for PKs. He then went on to break the MLS goal scoring record. If I was in his shoes, I would have hung up my cleats, but he kept going. This is a man who played for a 2nd division college team, sat on the bench for years in the MLS, and worked his way onto the USMNT as the first native American to represent us in the World Cup. He is a real inspiration for me.

Belgium has been a top contender for a few years now. They deserve something big man. Although winning 3 place last world cup isn't bad. But Belgium has been on a roll man.

2020. Covid. That Wondolowski miss still hurts. That almost tying free kick play still hurts.

I am English so I support England/Three Lions, but after watching this game I was simply starstruck. To this day, it is the greatest football match I've ever seen. USA played with such heart and passion, I wish England played the same.

The free kick at 1:35 is phenomenal. Overall, this game best represents the US Soccer Team - mediocre defense, legendary goalkeeper, sub-optimal midfield, yet moments of breath-taking brilliance.

I saw this match in Bodrum. 🇹🇷 A lot of people from Belgium 🇧🇪 were living in our hotel. They supported their beautiful team. It was really fantastic! 😍

That free kick, man. I was so ecstatic when it happened and then Courtois saved. Why did he have to ruin potentially the best play of the world cup?

So many heartbroken USA fans from Wondolowski’s miss. My heart broke when 1. the Netherlands scoring 2 goals in the last few minutes against Mexico and 2. Brazil were destroyed 7-1 in the semifinals against Germany.

Ohh, that was amazing saves from Tim Howard against Belgium. It really made Belgium frustration against USA. But we have to clap for USA and the goalkeeper at this world cup.

It's sad that so many good players from the USA are going to miss the upcoming World Cup in Russia. Let's hope it doesn't reverse the improvement of the past years.

Tim Howard with an absolute godly performance, just wasn’t enough to make up the talent difference

Even though it didn't lead to a goal the US free-kick routine on 1.35 was brilliantly conceived. Would have been a Goal Of The Tournament candidate had Johnson scored from it.

Klinsmen put the us in position to win they simply did not execute. That free kick at the end was a perfect example, beautiful drawn out play but they couldnt capitalize.

To everyone complaining about Wondolowski's miss (which, to be fair Wondo, yeah, *how* did you miss that? Bad linesman decision or not)... The ref called it offside (even though, yes, replays show he was *very much* onside), and no VAR back then, so the bad call would have stood! So yes, ironically, Wondo did not deny the US a winner by missing there, but may have actually *saved that linesman's career* by not scoring (just imagine the uproar if that bad call denied the US what would undoubtedly have been the game winner)!
