"Prejudice" is the word... we obviously see that on TV in the US. I was a kid, there were "boos" after their performance. (I loved this song - was it something else that caused people to deride them? - as well as so many other Eurovision songs, like "Poupee de Cire" and "Halellujah" [the songs used to have nonsense words that non-English speaking people think are cute, like "Diggy-Loo, Diggy-Ley" or "Boom Bang-a-Bang Bang"], and of course "Waterloo" - which started out ABBA's popularity amongst us plebes.) And, although "commentate" is a real word, in American/Canadian - it means something like "comment in a position of authority" - like at some kind of game - we always use the word "commentator", but "orientate"? REALLY? "Orient" (to give people just an idea what is happening) is just fine. It has another (perfectly acceptable meaning) of "East Asia", though we NEVER (well, since the 1960s, I think ) refer to PEOPLE as "Oriental", but it's perfectly fine to say "I'm going to take a trip to the Orient!"
Oh, you would probably not like to see it again... I am not sure, but I remember people in the audience "booing". I was about 17 at the time, and I was rather dismayed.
Lucky you! She was easily the most attractive (though she kind of looks like "Rose" from "Keeping Up Appearances"); the lead singer though looks like "the Chicken Lady" from "Kids in the Hall" (watch the videos; it was a Canadian show, but also VERY popular in the US - this has happened many times, and a lot of American shows are actually filmed in Canada.)
Should have won Eurovision. One of our best entries. Pretended I didnt like it at the time otherwise my sister would have given me so much stick. Now I’m getting on a bit I can say sorry Kay but this is a brill song!
With Eurovision 2023 just a week old i can't figure out why this classic is never mentioned when looking back at previous entries. We get plenty of coverage of Gina G, Bucks Fizz, Katrina And The Waves and even Brotherhood Of Man but not even a sniff of this great song. I have loved this ever since i first heard it in 84 and i personally believe it deserved a higher position than 7th.
@@stephencampfield3938 I got that you loved the song Stephen, I just don't get the criticisms it received previously. Homage has always been a part of music history whatever the genre, classical, jazz rock & pop composers have all paid homage to their influences and it's an excellent way for young listeners to find a door through which to journey back to the past and discover something new to their ears.
This song reminds me of when i was 4 my mum used to play it! i always remember it ,should of one if you ask me better than alot of future English entry's that came along
30 years ago, birds were so much better looking than the fake, plastic dross we see today. Belle wearing that cap, and ONLY that cap............I think I better go and lie down!
Barry Allen, i know, and the amount of girls now covered in tattoos and piercings is gross, nothing against being yourself, but not to the extreme it's become.
They only had one hit in the UK charts. They were influenced by soul music from the Motown stable they've got excellent taste çoming from young lady's in there prime of life. It was a shame they didn't have a long chart career it just wasn't to be.
Never really achieved the success that I would have thought it would . Best it did was make No.11 in the charts . Wrong era purhpas ? Somethimes I can't help thinking it might sound a bit mid 70s . I don't know . One thing I do know is that to me that lead singer Kit Rolph was one hot looking babe . God I would not have said no . Wonder what she looks like now ? Anybody know ? Whatever , always loved the song nomater how well it did or did not do .
The chorus is like Angel Eyes by Abba. The verses like several Supremes songs. But I love it and unfortunately it has no digital availability beyond risky downloads.
@whitbyjet65 Heh heh... I'm not CHOOSING my own stereotypes... but if they are wildly wrong (you know, such as "people in China eat lots of beef" or "penguins live in Canada and can fly") I'll try to help. And that IS "cricket, old chap"...
TAMARA BECKWITH APPEARED IN A EPISODE OF BOON IN WHICH TAMARA BECKWITH MODELLED WITH A ALIVE CARP FISH..DOES ANYONE KNOW THE TITLE OF THAT BOON EPISODE..POST REPLY ON THIS RU-vid PAGE
@whitbyjet65 They are called "instant mashED POTATOES" in North America, not "instant mash", any more than "mushy peas" are called only "mushy" in the UK, (as in "we had mushy last night")... And I'm sure it's a shock to you, but as I wasn't born for DECADES, nor do I work in the food industry, I didn't invent them. However, you seem to feel a need for trolling, so please say whatever you want about Canadians. (And I always thought people in the UK were anti-French and anti-German).
DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF THIS SONG "LOVE GAMES" IS AVAILABLE TO BUY ON ANY C.D. ALBUM, IS IT ON ANY 80,S C.D. COMPILATIONS ALBUM OR ON ANY EUROVSION C.D. ALBUM. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME ON WHICH ALBUM IS THIS SONG "LOVE GAMES" ON. IS IT ON ANY 80,S C.D. COMPILATIONS ALBUM OR ON ANY EUROVISION C.D. ALBUM. PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW I CAN GET "LOVE GAMES" ON C.D. POST REPLY ON THIS PAGE .. CHEERS.
@whitbyjet65 "Snow suits"? No, Canadians wear toques (kind of knitted hats). And Canadians do have culture - they invented electric stoves and instant mashed potatoes - two things that society couldn't live without! :-)
@starry2006 No , when all said and done unless you eather win it , or are already established like say Cliff Richard or Sandi Shaw then you are prety much finished . However there was one exception . Gina G . She got nowhere in the contest , but still made No.1 in the charts which was good and for it did still have a brief fise to fame .
@whitbyjet65 Actually, no... Why do you think that? I find stereotypes to be quite amusing (though I'm not fond of the type like "everyone knows the L people aren't as intelligent as the H people"); I was just HONING your stereotypes about Canadians (if you're going to do it well, you apparently need pointers; NO ONE wears a snow suit here or in the US unless skiing)... good stereotypes would be "playing hockey, eating doughnuts, and liking paying high taxes"... :-)
I don't think so Ha ha ! I never heard that the Bananarama girls were established professional singers like Kit Rolfe who , lets face it , has sung on so many records done so many tours and has performed for so many all over the world and still does ! Wonder who the wannabes are now !!
