Thank you for your clear tips. I'm a little sceptical about the ketogenic diet, especially in terms of cardiovascular health and visceral fat. Do you know of any publicly funded research that shows eating a high fat diet, including meat and dairy fats, doesn't compromise heart and vascular health or build up of visceral fat? I'm 57 (post menopausal and have never tried HRT). Thanks 🌸
Hi, I am 49, I will be 50 in December. I have no belly fat at all. I am in menapause. I do intermittent fasting, 16 hours of fasting, 8 hours of eating. I also prefer a vegetarian diet. Diet is key. Low carbs, little or no sugar and less dairy. I am lean. Ashwaraganda keeps my stress levels low, apple cider vinegar helps alot and iodine supplements (kelp). I eat avo everyday (good fats). Gluten free is best as it helps to stop me from being bloated. Trust me, it's not difficult when you put your mind to it. I tell my friends... Stop complaining, you have the ability to take control of your own life.
Agree with you Shereen...only you can take personal responsibility for your life..if something seems to be broken, there is no excuse to not find & attempt the fix. Never has helpful information been so available to everyone wishing to pursue it.
Dr Becky I am 64 and fast everyday as well as eating once a day! I have never felt healthier! I lost so much weight and no longer have a belly. Thank you so much for your videos! 🌹
@ Marci...can you explain more about eating once a day, how long do you fast? how do you curve your hunger the rest of the time, do you drink any milk/ snack or other things when you are not fasting.
@@pumamurals1317 , I eat a lot of veg, more so than chicken but am very aware of carbs! I don't eat potatoes, pumpkin, butternut. I think my success is eating OMAD which is normally at lunch and then again the next day. Dr Becky suggests having a big salad everyday, which I never miss. I don't snack and don't eat sugar. Because of my age I am very disciplined about what I eat. Blessings!
@@Razrai-bn8vf Razrai as I mentioned I eat once a day which is my main meal at lunch, everyday I have a big salad with one avocado, no salad dressing, I use lemons and olive oil. I think I have my cravings I just don't pay too much attention to them. I don't buy anything that I would crave for and it helps. I don't drink cows milk but almond milk if I need to, I don't snack or maybe once in a blue moon when I am with my family. I fast from around 2 or 3pm (after lunch) until the next day the same time. Eating once a day doesn't mean you can go wild, I follow the Keto lifestyle so my meal would be according to what they suggest. I hope this helps but there are professionals like Dr Becky who could help you even more. Blessings
Low carb and especially fasting has been the game changer for me. I'm 56 years old and had been 150lbs. for so long. Now I'm 135lbs. It took a few months...fasting was the biggie. ❤
@Dreamboat, maybe your doctor can help you with that. I fully understand the frustration of no willpower. I'm menopausal and put on 20-30lbs in the last 2 years without realizing it. Now that I've discovered Dr. Becky, I have motivation and lost 10lbs over the last month. It's hard work, but it is coming off. I wish you well on your journey. You can do it!
@Dreamboat Annie Hey there, Dreamboat, I hope you don't worry yourself too much. The most important thing is health. I didn't realize this video (and my comment!) was from two years ago! Well, I've gained most of that weight back but I'm not overly fretting about it. It's nice to be lighter, and I'm definitely going to start on that lower carb road again. I have to be careful though since during the time I lost all that weight, I gained a big, fat kidney stone. Thankfully and almost miraculously, it passed on its own, but my diet is first and foremost for my kidney health. It sounds like you--like most of us--have a very strong HABIT in place. Those are hard to break! I wonder if you can at least replace a late night snack with a low carb food. I'm very much convinced that the higher the carb--and the more processed it is--the more I'm going to crave eating anything... ANYTHING! So, I'd say don't beat yourself up. But I definitely have to have a PLAN ready, one that fits my issues, my body, my life. Keep in touch and let us know how you do! ❤️
I just found your channel today. I am 55, and had 2 partial knee replacements in 2017. Lack of any decent exercise because of these replacements (it's not like changing a tire, I'll tell you that! I can't squat or crawl anymore) and a poor diet has added 50 lbs. I am 1 week in to my new fitbit. And I am so grateful to get ahold of your channel and the 0,1,2,3 strategy, and I can't wait to dig in! I need to change my bad habits before it's too late! I want to be active and have fun with my grandkids!!!
Wow 😯 Hope you're doing great now. How is your health God Bless you Amen 🙏. She is Really trying helping out other women. Thanks to her allots of women are doing great today. Hello Dear. How are you?
Just yesterday I was saying to myself, how glad I am, that I got my carb consumption reduced over a year ago. Even during stressful times now, I make much better choices. I was able to lose the 20 pounds, that I put on before and during menopause. Now I am 55 and have the strategies in place, that I need to maintain a healthy weight and live a better life. And all of this I learned on the internet, not from my actual doctor. Thanks to you, Dr Becky and other RU-vid channels that provide so much helpful information!
Hi Dr. B....thank you so much for the incredible content. In this "everyone is an expert" world of Instagrammers and younger RU-vidrs, I appreciate the level of expertise and solid information from an older woman who has "been there, done that". So helpful to those of us over 50---relatable and much-needed!!
At your age her diet plan was my eating plan and always ate what I wanted but work would put the pounds on, so I stepped up the workout all was good and many people have a covid belly due to the lock downs and the fasting is hard, so I listen to Dr Allan Mandel, 1tb spoon olive oil with half chayane pepper good squeeze plenty of lemon juice fresh and honey 1ts, but he says quarter 1ts . Motavition Doc . You will not feel as hungry. Hope this helps also as I am over 60 getting fatter but will get there.
I'm actually looking into fat removal..... I'm 50 and I feel depressed cause the weight just isn't coming off anymore. I eat healthy and exercise 4 -5 a week, no junk. I have one ovary only, so assuming my hormones have tanked. I just feel sad and defeated. Ugh
I love your clear and informative videos! Thank you! I love IF and my husband and I have been doing it one day a week for 5 years. I also try to eat within a narrower time window. It helps to have a partner who is on board with me! One benefit I get from IF is knowing that I do have control! So often we get scrambled and use food to comfort. Stay calm, breath and eat your greens!
Dr Becky you are such a graceful woman thank you for helping so many of us older women I'm really happy I have been doing better with eating low carbs and no sugar maybe I cheat a little but it's OK because I'm losing slowly and feeling a little bit better
This is about weight loss, not losing belly fat. I have no problem losing weight by walking, the problem is that, even when emaciated, I still have excess belly fat.
I am 53 and you MUST start taking prebiotic tablets and enzyme tablet - it's a game changer. The small bit of fat you have you can make look better by lifting weights or doing pilates reformer.
I got rid of mine quick by intermittent fasting and low carbs. I use a calorie counter, it shows how many carbs are in each type of food and I keep my carbs around 70. It works for me. 😃
it gets harder to lose weight as you age. That being said, my mother lost over 50 pounds on keto and she is in her 70s. It can be done so don't let age be a barrier.
Great summary of really works Dr 👍 insuline resistance is the no 1 problem for women after 40. The other tip that works wonders is : no gluten. This is painful. Yes. Living without gluten is hard. Most of pleasure and comfort foods are loaded with gluten. We love it, but this is really toxic to us at that age 🥺 Keep away from it as much as you can. Cutting on gluten intake reduces inflamation and reduces fat cells like magic. Good luck Ladies! ✊
I've always needed explanations of "why" something is, rather than just accepting a comment. You are great! You explained WHY fats are important to our hormones. I had heard that before but no explanation as to why so I had a hard time accepting or understanding it. I have learned so much from your details-thank you Dr!
I'm a man. I learn from and enjoy all of Dr Becky videos. Who knows maybe learning more about women it'll help? For example; if you have a lady in your life that doesn't eat the best of foods and her doctor recommends a change, now is a good time for men to do more of the cooking. It's not easy when one eats healthy and one doesn't.
J F Always been skinny, kept the husband at the right weight. Got a job and he worked from home and offered to cook. Results, both of us are now overweight and he is just plain obese, eww! Thank you for this, will start tomorrow
@@TinekeWilliams You're welcome. I hope all goes well for you and your husband. I find it helps to know that eating is an individual thing. That said, it's okay if two people can't eat the same foods, or at the same time. I feel weight loss should be a secondary goal if its even needed (for me it is not .... sensitivity to certain foods is ). One's health; in my opinion, should be the goal. This is the best health insurance.
Very informative video. Thank you! You’re straight forward and give a lot of info without the annoying super loud, in-your-face style that many videos now have. Your videos are a pleasure to watch.
I have always been known to have a lovely pear shape..then I turned 50 and so many changes to my shape took place. Now I am an apple with thin legs😔 your video has given me a little boost today. Thank you so much🤗
I am 55 years old. I walk 3-5 miles every day with my husband and father. I eat very little. Lots of salads. I`m always complaining because I feel bloated and fat after I eat. I use to go to the gym and felt so much better then than I do now. I`m sure it`s because I did a variety of different exercises including weights. I have weights at home and might try doing some in the evening time a few days week. I will say since I have hit menopause the belly fat is there. And I hate it! Thanks for the tips!
I am 50. I do yoga and Pilates three days a week about 2 hours each times! But I am still gaining weight! I am 5’2 and weight 137 pounds! I used to be 110 pounds!
I'm hv same problem used to weigh 118 and 5"2, but weighed more than u...143 lbs now esp with lockdowns. I've never ever exercised but I've started doing Roberta's Gym here on YT. It's really good!! I just started 7 days ago .
I do that fasting naturally. I’ve never been a picker. I eat when I’m hungry but I eat a good portion, then I’m done. I do not eat after dinner and I don’t eat when I get up because I’m not hungry, it takes around three hours before I’m hungry. I don’t really diet but I try to eat healthy for the most part. I don’t use condiments, I only drink water with lemon and black coffee in the morning. That’s what I naturally do. My problem is, I don’t exercise. I’m 63, 5’6” and weigh 150lbs. I could stand to lose 10 lbs, my bones are not big.
@@ksdavisdesign some people have a larger frame than others. Some are petite and their bones are smaller and they’re more prone to get osteoporosis. There’s different muscle types too.
I've noticed more mature family members have overtime had an increase in hunger and a reduction in activity level too. This makes a dangerous combination if not proactively managed by the individual
Hi Dr. Becky, thanks for the video. Very well said. I'm a personal trainer and found your content to be spot on what I teach and suggest to my clients. -Kellie
I believe diet is key: 80% diet and 20% physical fitness works to help with the weight gain also the type of diet helps. What many women fail to also realize, childbirth later in life also contributes as well as the epidural which is pumped into our bodies thus atrophying our muscle tissue. Muscle is what burns fat. When your abdominal muscles have lost elasticity along with the medicinal epidural, can wreck havoc on the female form and it varies case by case.
My diet has consisted with all you mentioned for over 20yrs. And the past year my belly has gotten out of control. I changed my diet after learning of adrenal fatigue which I know western medicine doesn’t recognized. I walk for exercise because heavy exercise makes me tank… went vegan 8 months and I don’t do dairy. I eat btwn 10a -7am which is mostly just one meal or homemade vegetable juices..heaviest meal around 2pm…Not sure what else to do. The belly is out of control. You mentioned adrenals and that all I configure is the issue.
You're awesome, as usual. I follow all your tips, and have successfully entered menopause (a few weeks ago). Am confident that in following your learned advice, I'll stay the happy, healthy, lean machine that I am at 54!
@@Anno44 I love the outdoors including traveling and reading books, cooking, I'm an underwater welder/diver by profession, my favorite flower is Red Tulip and yellow is my favorite color I'm from Ohio US and you?
After menopause the only thing that worked for me is the fasting. I was eating only 900 cals a day all healthy foods. I actually gained weight! So I went to the 7/11 fasting (16 hours) and I started to Slowly lose it. I have a bad back and arthritis so I can't do much exercise other than walking. Not really helping on the tummy weight but all around it works. I will take any success. I am 5'3" and now 135 lbs when I used to be 115. It's tough. All I figure is I will do my best and let the rest sort itself. That is all one can do. Oh and I had 4 kids via C-Section which does not help any with the tummy issue. But at 57 I guess I can't complain too much. I figure do the best you can! I hope anyone that reads this knows you are not alone and this is so common. Much Love!
Thanks so much for this! I turned a half-century old in January. I have gained close to 10 lbs over the past year. I am less active than 5 years ago and less motivated, but I want to try something new. Your suggestions offer some hope. Thank you! ☺️
You’re very articulate with your words. Ty so much. I’ve started doing everything you talked about 3 weeks ago. I’ll let you know how I go. So far so good.
Your 0,1,2,3 Strategy got me off to a great start over a year ago. I have always had a belly, even when I was a kid. Now I am at my goal weight and at 57 I am in better shape than I have been in years. If I start to gain a couple of pounds I make sure to stick to your plan and listen to your advice to get me back on track. It isn’t difficult because the food is delicious and satisfying and the main thing is, I feel soooo much better!!!! Thank you!
@@christianlynn2679 I'm doing well, thanks for asking. I've lost 48 lbs thus far😊. I feel great, but my goal is 75 lbs. Intermittent fasting, clean eating and exercise is the combo that's working for me.
@@ReneeRGreen That's Good just Keep it up you are getting there. Sorry Forgive my Manners Am Christian Lynn by the way. Where are you from or What May I call you?
What a revelation this is for me. Been on Keto since Feb 10th and had blood work just last week. The results were my BEST NUMBERS across the board since 1990!!!! I am convinced that the scale does not tell the whole story by any means. More to learn of course, but I am committed.
Amen! Congrats on your improved numbers :). I always tell my clients that your weight is only a piece of your overall health puzzle, I'm much more concerned about blood values, blood pressure, and waist circumference. Keep up the good work!
Yes I’m 56 now and fealing terrible coz of my menopause I eat healthy Try and excersise as have fybromyalgia. Yes so true hate how I look now . Feal so uncomfortable 🥵 Thankyou for this .
I watched this and then noticed the spelling of your name. This is soooo rare! That’s my husband’s family’s name! And beyond that I have had success with eating like this.
I've been losing weight from the top down. My face is thinner, my neck and shoulders thinner, arms getting a bit thinner. I've lost fat from my back and from my thighs. Upper abdomen, thinner. But my belly and lower abdomen have not lost. I started with a huge belly hangover, and it is still just as huge. The problem is extra skin. I am hoping to lose this extra skin through fasting and autophagy, but it seems all the fat has to go first. I have lost eighty pounds but have another eighty pounds to go. And now I have stalled, haven't lost a pound for a month. I'm going up and down and up and down the same three pounds for a whole month.
This could have been written by me. This is exactly my story. The weight is going from the top down. Really not seeing much change at the lower abdomen.
Unfortunately, I stopped intermittent fasting, which I practiced for over a decade, due to severe headaches that once triggered by hunger, will last for up to a week. Now I eat all day long, up till the moment right before bed. I have gained a few pounds, but it is worth the trade-off.
I hear you .... The same with me 🙃 try to eliminate gluten and take some good probiotics like Solgar 40, or similar. Works fine for skinny person with belly fat. Just be patient. 2 months and shall be much better without starving yourself 😉😉
Dear Dr. Becky, you are a blessing for women over 50, and not just us!, with your intelligent and easy to follow guidelines. I thought I knew something about food and diets, but I really did not: I was stuck in a bygone era of outdated information. You have nailed it with your wonderful videos, and I enjoy not only watching them, but following your smart advice. Thank sonmuch for doing this and sharing your knowledge and passion!
I'm always underweight my whole life. I don't look like I have eating problem because I eat a lot. I loved carbs and used to eat lots of carbs. But I don't like soft drink and foods that's high in sugar. I also love vegetables and fruits. Since I got older and during locked down time, I became prediabetic. Now, even though, I'm still skinny, I want to reverse prediabetes, I have to follow low carb diet. I eat lots of vegetables as I always do. I love fruits, but sadly, many of them are high in fructose 😔 I know one thing about my body. If I keep my #2 regularly, my belly flatter. If I don't have my #2 everyday, my belly got bigger. 😂 Thank you Dr. Becky. You are so right about follow the low carb diet to keep insulin level healthy. That's very important, not only for women over 50 but for all older people. While my dr. keeps saying I'm skinny, I should eat more everything and don't be on any diet 😏
I had my sixth, and last, child at 47..whew! 4 years later and it’s been a struggle and a double whammy! Shift into arms and and see changes in my skin and bigger chest. I know exercising works great for me but hard to be consistent.
I am taking a tablespoon of coconut oil every day and it is reducing my belly fat. I also do time restricted eating also where I stop eating at 6pm and then eat breakfast at 10 am which is when I take the coconut oil. The time restricted eating has made me feel healthier and did remove what little excess fat I had on the rest of my body but it did not remove the belly fat so I started taking the coconut oil and it is honestly melting away the fat on my belly. It may seem hard to believe but truly it works. Coconut oil also helps me with anxiety, as well as improving hair, skin and nails.
Does HRT help to lose belly fat? I wouldn’t take it just for this reason but I’m curious if taking estrogen actually does make a difference which would prove that the reason we gain after menopause is the lack of estrogen.
Good! Yes. You are one of the few who understands the biochemical processes involved in gaining or losing weight. It has very little to do with quantities of calories that you eat. It all has to do with hormones, especially Insulin, which has only one function and that is to store fat. So good video. Also add that we need eat more animal fat such as butter or ghee or organic meat with high fat content
Intermittent Fasting has been amazing!! It works so well for me - I don’t even get hungry as I thought I initially would. Lost weight and cleansing!! Highly recommend this.
Lisa Lee try dermablading. You can do this at home yourself. Ive use to go every three weeks religiously to have it done but since the quarantine I ordered the blades from sephora and do them myself now.
Dr. Becky, I'm doing the IF, try to stay on a keto diet, try to eat some vegetables, I do sauerkraut, pickled beets, and getting back into walking now that the weather is better. My issue is constipation, and see it in my lower intestines on my belly, making me feel sluggish, I drink more water than I've ever done before, hoping the walking would help. Any suggestions?
I’m over 50 (and healthy) and a little bit of fat is ok. I’ve noticed people who lose too much fat also look older. Over 50, I think there’s a need to keep a bit of fat on, especially on the face. Besides, most men like women with a bit of fat on them, trust me. Lol.
I don't understand because I'm 5.6 tall and 133 Ibs and I have belly fat ? I don't really want to lose weight but I do want to get rid of the belly fat so what to do?
Thank you for the information, hence I am on low carb diet for the first 4months I lost 10kg. Now for the last 12months no matter what I do cannot lose any more weight. To reach goal weight I need to still lose another 20kg, please assist.
That's more better hearing you it's working out for you. Just after Your morning Walk Take some Vegetables after Your morning Walk. It helps allot. How are you?
Hi Dr am 43 yrs since my delivery had a big belly and I consult a Dr he told me that its bloating and stress, even I control my foods have exercises I dont loose to much weight, am 95 kg and am vegetarian. Plzz if u can help me am tired bcoz I have heavy legs nd people comments my own dear once ,stressed me more.
I'll be 38 in April and had my ovaries removed at 15yrs old so been in menopause most of my life. Belly fat is my problem. I want to lose 15lbs. Intermittent fasting worked for a bit but thought it might be working against me. I've heard that if you're in menopause you should not go without eating more than 4 hours during your awake. Is that true in your opinion? Might try again. Used to fast for 16ish hours a day.
Dont have any fluids after meals . those such juice , water , tea soda will expands your stomach. You just have to eat everything that is healthy and avoid processed foods drinking lots water in between meals . Weight lifting is better than cardio to loose inches
I have not taken HRT but I wonder if taking it now would help me get leaner. I have been exercising since my teens and always exercised regularly but I had a heart attack 08-2018 and that slowed my exercise routine for a few months but I have tried to go back to exercing 6 days a week using the Tony Horton method Beach Body which had helped me before. My cardiologist says coconut oil is unhealthy so I don't use it anymore (I used it very little anyway). I am not a big eater, love veg and high fiber foods, don't like fried foods, don't have soft drinks just Hibiscus and black tea (cold). I do love chocolate high in cacao content 70+ this is my weakness. Should I try that powder HRT advertised on TV, to kick start the hormone levels in my body?
Regarding hibiscus tea, is there any concern with arsenic or chemicals when buying the tea? Wondering if you have a recommended brand or a country of origin to look for (or avoid). Thanks!
You know the point I need to re-focus on is noted here by Dr. Becky, basically "you can't eat like a 25 year old". I am getting back on track after a period of not really understanding that.
I have a background in Foods and Nutrition and I can say your video has cut cut through all the poproganda around diets. More than any other time in history we are eating more sugar and processed fats that are destroying our health. It is hard to change bad habits especially when it ismarketed everywhere and know it is all about money and profits. Learn the truth and start with small changes it will make a difference.
Hi I can't excercise because of back bone, I tried walk at home exercise and pilates but I get extreme pain, I try to eat only apple and an orange for dinner and breakfast at 9 a.m but I gained 2 kilos over the past month and it is spread between my belly and hips. I hate looking at myself. I always hated being fat and now I'm getting there. By the way I am 58 yrs old.
I'm a carnivore and keeps carbs close to zero. I am 55 and post-menopausal and am having a hard time losing belly fat. I don't do dairy right now, just beef, lamb and lots of animal fats..I do intermittent fasting and alternate day fasting (twice a week 40 hours), remainder on an 18/6 schedule. I also do HIIT 3 times a week and pilates once a week.
