8:50 Morissette's clip got muted due to copyright, it really sucks! She sounds DIVINE there! Sorry for the inconvenience! RU-vid has been a bit crazy lately... The song is called "Moon River" btw Here's a link to it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_NRSdXT5QzA.html
And not even skill; people judge abilities on belting stamina. There are many singers who have no support in the 5th octave but always are singing there and being praised for being "powerhouses".
Sadly, this is a mindset here in the Philippines. A lot of singers belt/strain to belt just to be considered a good singer. Proper technique, dynamics, and musicality is often thrown out the window.
I strongly agree with what Mariah said at the beginning. Personally I prefer to sing down in my lower register and it’s rly nice when other people utilize their lower registers cause it provides a nice contrast to the overload of vocal power and it just rings in your ears
This is why i love Mariah she has every aspect of singing in her pocket like she knows how to belt, crazy agility, good low notes, good headvoice/falsetto with amazing transitions and even her unbeliavbe control in the whistle register
i love how she chose R&B later in her career not the boring ballad songs Tommy wanted her to stay doing. I think with R&B, it really shows her vocal skills more.
Miley’s lower register is definitely one of her best singing assets and she is amazing with it. I definitely wished the world would appreciate other aspects of singing like this video is saying, because there are so many incredible singers out there that can’t belt the highest, but they are still amazing singers
I love Mariah's high notes but her low notes are sooo buttery and smooth same for ariana I'm glad she's working on her lower register coz it's one of the best register
@@majorslag11 just saying that she was not overbelting, that G5 was controlled, balanced and with perfect vibrato, and it’s not easy for a dark placed voice soprano
While that’s true, and I agree, Perrie can do so much more with her incredible voice than belt. She has incredible lows, her head voice is out of this world, and she adds so much color to her other areas of singing. I do think Leigh is better with runs and hers and Jade’s vocal agility is a little better, but, Perrie is a voice and one of the best vocalists of this generation
@@1Love2Live3Laugh exactly and all of em has their own falsetto notes. I really hope soon they get their own whistle register cause all of em are capable of it tho no doubts and I hate to admit that people must stop comparing Perrie to Ariana Grande. They literally have like lots of difference among them.. They all got crowns
@@izazellightwood636 They all do, and I’m sure that they are talented enough to develop whistle registers. Perrie has proven that she has a whistle register, it just isn’t developed or remotely clean enough to use. She’s had whistle-register exclamations in songs and otherwise. But yeah, Ari’s and Perrie’s voices are different. All four of these girls have crowns tho. Five if you include Jesy
@@1Love2Live3Laugh not really sure but Perrie's register was F7 right? Well Perrie's got a strong voice and Ari's got a light high voice they're all great.. It's great to see someone that has a same thought as me ah
@@izazellightwood636I believe it was an f7 that was documented/recorded, yes. Ari does tend to use her voice to create a softer, airy sound, but girl can definitely sing powerfully when she wants to. She is incredible, as are all of Little Mix. I’m glad we have the same thought! It’s refreshing to agree with someone rather than oppose them and start an argument on youtube haha.
A very good example when it comes to obsession on belting are Filipina singers and the Filipino singing industry in general. Here in the Philippines, people usually regard belting as the standard of singing or hitting high notes = good technique.
I've just realised recently that Taylor Swift's low register is crazily good. She can go down do D3, which is quite incredible even for a mezzo-soprano. And the sound projected is still soft and pleasant. Now I can enjoy another aspect of her artistry, besides her songwriting skills.
Same. But I prefer Mariah, Ariana, and Morissette. IDK, I just think their vocals are very colorful and bright because they offer so many elements in their singing. More than just belting.
I love the fact that you made this video. There is so much more to singing than just belting (in particular high belts). My personal favourite part of a song is the dynamics, which involves way more variation than people realise. I personally think it's one of the biggest things that makes singers like whitney, beyonce and christina stand out so much as vocalists.
This is why mariah is the best singer by far, she has AMAZING lows, she has greta mid belts, she had amazing high mixed belts in her prime and can still do some of them today, she has great falsetto and amazing control of her whistle register and can transition between both of them like its nothing, amazing agility and runs, shes the whole package
This video!!!! YASSS! Btw i love the fact that you included Jennifer Hudson’s in dynamic, control and tone because I think she has an AMAZING control of her voice when she’s singing softer and it’s sometime overlooked because of her impressive belting range!
Please talk about Sara Bareilles as well. This woman can do everything from music to broadway and her vocals are underrated. Her techniques are so healthy that in her 40's she can still sing her heart out.
@@barileageorgebrianf.5393 Yeah Sara is in her 40's but sounds really young and thats from her vocal training from when she was in The Waitress and in Jesus Christ Superstar
Great video, as always! As a mixer, I'm happy to see all the girls in the video, not just Perrie, like it usually happens But, I think you could've included Taylor in the lower register part of the video. She has proven herself great at this area, specially in her latest albums (and lives, like the folklore long pond sessions and her grammy performance)
I’ve seen a lot of people hating an ariana’s new music because she doesn’t belt as much but personally I love her new approaches and stylistic choices they give her music so much personality, and most importantly you can tell that she’s having so much fun with her sound.
8:50 Morissette's bashers always say that Morissette is only limited to belting and whistling. Her low notes and dynamics are part of her vocal colors too.
Morissette's bashers can say what they want until the cows come home; however, Morissette is also one of the very few versatile singers in the world who is comfortable singing from any genre and she does it with ease and aplomb!
I really love this channel.... Here I experience a world of music I've never come across..... I don't usually watch live performances from artists..... That's why I really love this channel.... It's true and unbiased
I feel like singing in tune (especially in non-pushy parts of the voice) without any pitch modification or processing is one of the most impressive things to me. It takes paying attention and restraint and is a great indicator of a stable musician. Tori Kelly’s livestreams are some of my personal favs...
I've been so obsessed with high notes (falsetto, belts, head voice, etc) but now I'm a lot more impresed when I hear a resonant low note, mid belts, dinamics, breath control, agility and more
That's what makes Mariah different from all the other vocal powerhouses, she respects her limit and understands her voice deeply well and also she's very adventurous in her singing especially live, she doesn't always belt and belt and belt like what she does in the studio instead she sings on account of at what state the condition of her voice is at the moment and goes with the flow... Plus she has an impressive sense of pitch!
GREAT video!!!! i mean, you're totally right, especially about dinamics. i also appreciate good musicality, the ability to create astonishing melodies and change a line's emotion with just a note!
Dynamics>>>> Belting I’d rather have some pianissimo or airy vocals, a use of different registers that give a song some “flavor” and emotion, than have someone belt all the time. I’d also have a vocalist who has some control across all registers to their voice, than have a vocalist that can only belt, but can not do lows, head voice, whistles etc or those who can not access agility, transitions. Amazing video! I love that you also included male vocalists, although I understand the jealousy part of it (we all are tbh) ♥️😭
@@KajiVocals Mariah’s whole catalogue is FILLED with dynamics lol. You have the simple but yet effective formula. She usually starts the song with airy vocals, that crescendo during the 2nd verse and chorus, and then explode in the climax followed by the last chorus (usually the key is also changed). Let’s not talk about the different types of whistle textures she uses in different songs to match the lyrics (soft- Bliss, piercing- Bringing on the Heartbreak). Cmon now
From my personal experience this is true, from 2016 to early 2019 i was belting for my life 3-4 days a week singing challenging songs plus bad habits and I almost lost my singing voice, (I couldn't sing for 3 weeks), I learned the lesson and since that I'm more focused on mix my voice, develop my lower register, head voice, agility and more, I still can reach high notes up to E4 with minimal effort but my voice has become lower, sometimes I have a subtle raspiness in the high range, now I can do kettles and sometimes whistles and my mid range sound fuller and powerful
5:49 Scott could run a marathon with that agility, one of the best baritones in pop music now a days. Before someone asks, he is from Pentatonix, an acapella group. Check it out later
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ui8hpl2pc30.html if you skip to perries verse on this video of secret love song, she uses a really nice and breathy head voice to replace the belted notes. It’s probably her version of dodging the belted notes because the gwt really took a toll on her voice, but I think that it sounds amazing. And it also really helps build the dynamics of the song, because the way that her, jesy, and Leigh pop off at the end 🤯
Personally I appreciate and love low notes and part of is because of your videos... I realised the effort and technique it took to sound calm cool and bad ass without going nutz
An example for that is Jade Thirlwall She is a good belter but not the most amazing. BUT, her control, agility(riffs and runs), musicality, higher register(falsetto), low notes, tone are incredible. No doubt, She is one of the most well rounded singers of this generation.
Thank you for lower register I love lower deep female voices like Miley Cyrus, Adele, Beyoncé, Jazmine Sullivan, Lalah Hathaway, etc I think the industry put so much pressure on female vocalists to be in the highest notes, belting section that they aren’t ability to showcase their lower register and destroy their voices (Adele, Demi lovato) or naturally low deep female voices tend to be underrated/under-appreciated (Jazmine Sullivan, Mikey Cyrus)
I wouldn’t say half of those women have deep voices though. Jazmine and Beyonce in particular don’t. Lalah’s just a mezzo who imitated her dad (great Donny Hathaway). She has incredibly solid mix up to G5. Miley is also a mezzo, Adele as well.
Me: Living a big damn shitty life. Ain't No Other Fan: Let's try something new, something out of the comfort zone. How about listening and delving more into male singers? Me: 👁️👄👁️
Of course for Mariah it would be boring.. she has already mastered it and creativity is a huge/important part of her musicality. 🙌🏽 Mariah loves using her most intricate features of her voice, so I get why she thinks it’s boring. If I go to a concert and just hear the singer belting 70% of the time, I would be bored and uninterested too 💀 I’ve always wondered what would the WBT climax sound like if that exec didn’t come to the studio that day.. We all know it was rushed, hence the insane upper phrasing and long C5 belt, but like would it have sounded similar to the other climaxes on TEOM?
@Eunoia Flowersss I believe they are talking about male singers needing more attention on the vocal side of RU-vid. And it is true that they don't get nearly as much attention on here as female singers.
@Eunoia Flowersss There are dozens of incredibly good male vocalists out there. They just aren't showcased. And I think it is a mistake that people focus purely on top whatever mainstream artists which rarely include any good vocals, male or female. R&B and gospel fields have dozens upon dozens of male singers who are incredibly skilled. Rock and metal as well.
@Eunoia Flowersss Fair. But not all of the singers in this video are mainstream though. There are plenty of lesser known vocalists from non-mainstream genres (and fields) included such as Sohyang or Morissette Amon. I would say though that rock in particular is rather mainstream, and was more mainstream in the past. If a singer from the soul genre can be included, then surely a rock singer could be too. Pop as a term refers to 'popular' and rock topped the charts across many decades, even in 2010s.
Love this!!! Interesting how you feel like vocal runs and rifts aren't praised enough cause I feel the opposite. I love how you showed Jennifer Hudson in a different light. Most people know her as a belter but forget she can sing soft and her dynamics are actually my favorite part of her voice and range. Like you said who needs to belt when you can sound like this. Love it! She has such a distinctive tone and it has a angelic opera tinge to it. Love Whitney. She is the queen of heavenly head voice. I love Mariah Carey! Her tone is everything. I also love Mariah's dynamics too. I'd say Patti Labelle, Mariah, Whitney, Aretha and Chaka are my fave when it comes to the dynamics. Tamia, Jennifer and Ledisi are my faves out of our generation when it comes to the dynamics and lyrical phrasing. Great video. I enjoyed it!
@@aaronnewman7573 Exactly she can do way more then just belt. She can also sing any style of music too with ease. I don't like when people try to place a singer in a box. Jennifer more versatile vocally then people think.
@@NIJEECAPRICORN23 they do that to a lot of black women unfortunately. everyone is either a belter, hits high notes, low notes, is raspy, growls/squalls, or does runs/occasional scat. that’s about it
@@aaronnewman7573 That's sad and it isn't fair cause singers like Jennifer can do just about anything with their voice. That's also the reason why people be shocked when they see her sing jazz or traditional pop standards. They be like wow I didn't she was capable of doing that. Some singers you just can't place in a box. Ledisi is another one that can't be placed in a box. Her Nina album.is amazing.
mariah is so experimental in singing if you'll study her, that's why a lot of singers aspires to sound like her. idc what anybody has to say about her, if you know how great of a vocalist she is, you know. the woman is a living art.
Morissette is the master of all techniques that could be possibly talk about in music. She's just 24 but she already executed all these and often used by the vocal coaches around the world as an example and vocal coaches knows it better than us, for they studied music and vocals for years. Morissette's vibrato, resonance, agility, solid chest belt, diction, crystal clear whistle, crispy squeak, monstrous growl, breathing control are the proofs that she embodies music. She's the greatest that we have in the planet and sad that she's underrated. I also like Dion, Houston, Aguillera, Lovato, Grande and Clarkson. Kudos to these ladies. They are so humble. 🍎
She’s the one to beat right now and for her just having fun interacting with her fans on social media almost every day singing playing piano and taking requests from her fans anyone here don’t know this you can see it for yourself live tik tok Facebook and kumu MORISSETTE
So true ! One notable example of that is Vanessa Williams ! She's not a belter however she sings better than lot of belters , and delivers great renditions that beat the ones from belteing acts ! Her tone , diction, musicality, originality and grace set her as a better singer overall than Céline Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, etc...Her renditions of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, What Child Is This ,are unbeatable.
@@certainly25 bro she came from church Jhud is a soul singer she don’t care if she sing off key or .. if she touched your soul , she made it that’s her point . Plus , her voice has a lot of volume her G5 sounds higher than other singers G5’s she can’t help it but there’s a lot of performances when she sang differently from usual like the Stevie wonder tribute it was breathtaking / memory from CATS on the voice / IWALY Whitney H. tribute ... and a lot of great performances people needs to stop sleeping on her and give her the recognition that she deserves
Sohyang’s head voice clears my skin ahhhh 👼. But yeah, there’s way more to singing than just belting. It takes a lot of skill to belt well, but it takes just as much skill to sing low, execute riffs and runs, have excellent dynamic control, etc too! Belting is the most in your face skill, but it’s definitely not the only skill that matters.
I wouldn't really say lower register requires as much skill to develop well. I mean... you can develop it purely by speaking (that is how most people develop it - men especially develop those lows by speaking lower).
@@KajiVocals fair enough, that definitely requires the least development. It’s also just easier to sing low in general. Less stress and tension on the vocal cords generally.
@@skylerpowers8871 Yep. People often overthink how to sing low haha. They speak a clear C3 and then legit DIE on a note a few semitones above (Karen Clark I'm talking to you).
Tbf, belting is kind of a hard thing to master and do well and consistently without hurting yourself (from MY point of view and experience of someone who has been studying vocal technique for a little over a year now) and it is very impacting to hear indeed. It basically shows the power ones voice has. But when belting is the only thing you do well or the only thing you do well, you unfortunately become a one trick pony, AND it tires the listener like... is there ANYTHING else you can do apart from belting?
Love the video. Off topic but can you do the voice analysis of Rihanna like a full video showing her from her debut to now. ( If you have time thanks ❤️☺️)
