Because he got exposed. All 19 were useless no bodies. Lawler was robbed. Then he fights semi decent competition and gets flattened. That's why he doesn't get respect because he was never as good as his record suggested
@@jaycuthbert245 he can only wrestle and his wrestling was top tier around khabibs skill so that’s extremely impressive but if he can’t wrestle he will always lose and masvidal predicted he would try and wrestle and knee his in the face it’s pretty simple deny him from the takedown and it’s over
@@carson2725 yes I stand by my comment. All haven't even gotten close for a chance let alone proved themselves in the big leagues of the ufc. That's like you saying your relative is incredible at football because he scored 5 goals against some team. If that team is nothing then it means nothing. However if he scored those 5 goals against Liverpool or Chelsea then I'd sit up and take notice making sure I kept tabs on him. None of them have ended up dominating the sport and getting a title shot in the BIG LEAGUES. And whether you like it or not, until you reach the ufc, nothing is close to being big leagues. So those "names" you reeled off to me didn't and wouldnt impress me at all. Not one bit.
@@jaycuthbert245 the fact that you consider only the UFC to be the "big leagues" and that Bellator and ONE aren't top competition is laughable. ONE FC is the biggest MMA promotion in the East. Hell, DJ got his first KO loss in his career over there after cleaning out the entire UFC FW roster. To say that competition in ONE like Aoki is low level is laughable. And the fact that you have no clue who Koreshkov or the-monster-that-is-Douglas-Lima in Bellator are, just shows that you're a casual that knows nothing of the sport outside of the UFC.
Lol this reminded me just how much I loved the Ben Askren era, and him and Woodley doing interviews together and joking around. Though short lived will always be one of my favorites.
Yeah I had a friend like that in HS. I felt so bad for him, he had no communication skills whatsoever and never failed to make whoever he was talking to feel awkward. I would feel bad cause I would call him out, like “Larry are you gonna shut up anytime soon? Are you never not annoying?” And the group would laugh at what I said. But I think it was best for him cause I don’t think anyone ever really called him out like that, I think in 5 years he’ll thank me lol. Cause he would kind of get quiet and mad at me for what I said. He’d follow up with a passive aggressive response. And I’d be like “don’t get mad at me for calling you out, fix your insecurity. if you really were confident in yourself, you wouldn’t get mad at what I said, you’d just tell me to shut the fuck up” but he knew in himself that he was cringe and he probably didn’t wanna be seen that way
The awkward realization that Ben Askren could literally man handle and throw any ripped physique body builder around at his will. He may not look strong but that’s grip and tendon strength is unparalleled
Because he just didn't care enough to do anything extra since the wrestling was always so good that it kinda masked how bad his striking was, but now in the UFC where most fighters know how to grapple AND strike, that's pretty much why he got thrashed by everyone there, even the lawler fight was a big bad ref decision, Robbie woulda destroyed him. His move to the UFC did prove something, that no matter what people say or try to convince you, UFC fighters are levels ahead of other competitors. Bellator is barely starting to take shape and get decen fighters of their own, when Ben fought there they were not as good, and in ONE FC, well they have VERY good strikers, but for an asian promotion with mostly asian athletes, those dudes don't wrestle or grapple much, they focus 90% of their time on kickboxing and muay thai.
@@klefthoofrobert787 Sure it was an early stoppage but once he had him in that choke it was over wether herb stopped it there or 5 seconds later lawler wasnt getting out of that choke. He was no longer even fighting it, just sitting there hoping his jaw stayed attached to his skull. Im not saying Ben is the better fighter but he got the better of Robbie that night.
@@colbysmith3073 Yes you are right. It was definitely an early stoppage but Herb stopping it early only took some legitimacy & shine off Askren & gave Lawler something to make an excuse for ! Robbie was gone in another 5 seconds or so & Askren's squeeze is next level !
The fact that Dana traded away Demetrious Johnson, one of the most dominant and classy champions of all time, for Askren is hilarious. I’m sure Dana must love that move thinking back on it.
Dana really doesnt mind the trade just think about it. DJ Wanted out, he was underpaid and never truly appreciated by the UFC. UFC got fun moments from Ben, yes he got KOd by Jorge but that KO was massive went viral shot Jorge up into stardom ( if you want to call it that ) that fight lead to Jorge vs Nate for the BMF Title which headlined its own PPV in Madison Square Garden ( Again another big win for the UFC ) PPV did good numbers and Jorge came in 1 week or 2 week notice to fight Usman. Dont forget Ben went onto box Jake and got a massive payday for that one too. So please explain to me how this was the worse trade in MMA history? Literally everyone won in that trade. Ben won, DJ won ( and hes much happier, per his own words ) UFC definetely won.
Tbh, people started to praise DJ once he left. No one paid attention to 125 until the Cejudo fight. The UFC didn't care about DJ. Nor did the mainstream crowd.
Ben Askren is actually just smart and recognizes what's real regardless of heirachy. He recognizes what exactly dana is uncomfortable with and attacks it subtly
I didn’t like Ben at first until I realized that was the point he feeds off the hate he doesn’t want people to like him he’s a badass and he doesn’t care if you know it that’s a dangerous man he’s so misleading and good at playing people.
Except no, not only does Ben have a long history pretty racist comments, but he is a bitch who gets beat and blames it in everyone but himself, he will never improve because he refuses to admit he has flaws, litterly my least favorite mma fighter ever
@@_kng573 agree to disagree from what I see Ben is a very humble fighter who has accepted his defeats and bettered himself because of it he clearly has the “Olympian mindset” he’s able to have laser focus on what he wants he wanted to be a world class wrestler and he was he had a pretty successful UFC career and now he’s transitioned to boxing and I recognize that he’s not the best striker and he’s said himself he doesn’t stand a chance against actual pro boxers but in the short time he’s become a very good boxer and has improved much.
@@quiksilverw0352 I think he is an I credibly talented fighter. Obviously, but I'm not questioning that, I think he is one of the biggest douche bags in the sport. To put into perspective how much I dislike him I'm actually rooting for Jake Paul in this fight... wow I cant believe I jus said that
Lawler kicked Bens ass, which makes Ben's comeback absolutely phenomenal, think about it. Guy was dumped on his head and punched in the face several times. Got up and got a strong submission. Crazy tbh.
@@ladsd679 Well with that logic, he didn't get his ass kicked the maia fight, it was a pretty competitive fight with Askren winning the fight up until the submission
I gained a lot of respect for robbie lawler watching him clapping for ben when they raised his hand. Thats a good sport which is not so common in the ufc
@@artistryspectrum512 ben was never gonna win he was a bad boxer always, but regardless that jake paul ben askren "ko" stoppage was total bs. He got knocked down not out and they should have let him keep going. The refs wanted jake to win obviously and robbed everyone who paid out of watching a fight. Look at the bombs he takes from lawler way harder than jake paul and he doesnt get knocked out.
He talked a lot of trash he didn't back up, but when hes sitting down relaxing, and you ask him about other fighters, hes pretty respectful and has a lot of good things to say. I think its ok to trash talk, as long as you keep it towards only the person you are fighting at the time, and don't cross the line, talking about family members etc.
@James Kennedy Colby is as charismatic as the 16 year old jock who screams all the time about his high school team while bragging about the models he doesn't bang while sitting in his lifted truck doing doughnuts in the parking lot lol
@@bradmace6144 for sure. Im still of the opinion that knee was entirely bad luck for Ben. The fight would have went very different if that didn’t land. Ben has a granite chin, I don’t believe Jorge would have been able to KO him with his hands
Askren’s charm is that he looks like he doesn’t give a f-k but still wins against type a roid boys. He looks like a neighborhood kid who doesn’t belong in the ring and then pulls off wins. He may not win them all but he’s a tough mo fo.
Anybody that gets inside the octagon deserves respect. Most people wouldn't even want to fight a person even if they were guaranteed to win, or if no one else would see it. The mental toughness required to get in there and risk getting knocked out or submitted or embarrassed in any way is huge. People look at fighters like they're just another kind of athlete, but they really aren't. The thrill of victory and the sting of defeat are multiplied by 10 , compared to regular team sports or other individual sports. Losing a fight can be catastrophic for your self esteem and your psyche, especially if you get dominated or lose in a humiliating way. When you talk about MMA or UFC online, you always have to remember that it's easy for unathletic keyboard warriors to talk shit sitting in front of a screen at home. Askren gets a lot of hate online, and his personality makes him unlikable, but the people disparaging him online wouldn't say a word to his face, I guarantee it.
He also came into the ufc with injuries that should have retired him and still beat robbie, one of the baddest dudes on the planet after taking a beating that would have put a diaz out.
The reason why the lightweight and welterweight divisions are the most stacked is because there is no 165 in between them...so dana won't be urged to create a 165 division
@@elarabymohammed1 Yeah because creating a 165 division costs the UFC more money and to pay 165ers. And Dana doesn't want that. He wants to win as a much money with spending the least.
@@randyjohnson2885 I simply see it from a different POV...creating an intermediate weight class betweent them weakens both divisions as talent will be dispersed among 3 divisions and makes it easier for fighters to switch weight classes whenever they lose a fight
Holy shit... Ben really predicted he would get his ass kicked three times, when everyone thought he would be the next big thing.... Mystic Ben! Edit: not EVERYONE can go along with a joke.
@@timtrainque1060 but imagine getting your ass beat by Lawler. Ruthless. Robbie. Lawler. Getting dumped on your head from a high amplitude slam, getting punched directly in the face.... and then having the heart to not lose the fight... and then having the balls to get back up, get in a dominant position and give him a blood choke with your mighty watermelon crushing wrestler arms. Tbh huge props to Ben for that.
The song in the background when Dana's reading out the bonuses in the post fight press conference after masvidal knocked askren out makes this 10x better 😂😂
His face did so much damage to Masvidal’s knee that Jorge fell to the grown and started tapping out practically begging for the ref to stop the fight before anymore damage was done to his knee.
@@AnonymousRandomGuy006 I just got back into MMA this year. Why does everyone like and defend Askern? He seems like an annoying corny douche. I am beffudled.
Less. He won the first fight, but took a bruising. Got knocked out in the second. Got put to sleep in the third. Getting a blood choke is the furthest thing from getting your ass beat. Plus he was winning the fight up until the choke.
He’s so goofy I can’t help but to like him. Look how goofy he looked after the lawler fight when he was being announced as the winner. Made me ugly laugh
@@spicycombatsports3961 i don't disagree , the problem here is him having one controversial win in the UFC at that time , to deserve a shot against a guy like Khabib you need a little more than that ... also Khabib got skills with his kicks and punches and Ben doesn't
I dont think people understand that just being a famous more well known fighters means you can instantly beat any other fighter. Ben was an Olympian wrestler mate gold standard
@@spicycombatsports3961 idk how much so at this point, especially if Askren had to cut to 155, plus he’s just so much older, although in his prime you probably have a point
Lol WHAT? That’s a terrible comparison. Deadpool actually kicks ass. Askren does not kick ass. Askren is funny, but a Deadpool comparison is not accurate at allllllll, man.
This is interesting to think about bc in all likelihood Askren would've absolutely ruined him on the ground. I wonder how close we were to seeing Ben in Jorge's spot.
Yeah I'm right there with you. All of his trash talking got on my nerves but I honestly didn't know much about him and I didn't follow him before he came to the UFC I just fed into the narrative that was given. But watching a ton of his interviews thanks to this bullshit Jake Paul fight,I've grown to like him. I still remember thinking that Robbie Lawler fight was bullshit but I can certainly appreciate why it was stopped. I hope Ben askren whoops Jake Paul's ass.
@Zay Da Don it's honestly hard to say. Ben askren's not wrong. Paul hasn't actually boxed anyone you would even remotely consider a fighter even if Ben isn't a striker he's only been knocked out once in his life and according to him that was also the only time he's ever been rocked in the first place. And I say all of that to say the only thing we know about Jake Paul is that he's trained hard for the last 3 or so years but you don't learn how good someone is by fighting scrubs. We don't learn how good a NBA basketball player is by playing a middle schooler. The people he fought didn't really train beyond a few weeks for the fight that they were fighting. So the only idea we have that he's good is the videos he puts out of him training but training and having an actual fight against someone who knows what it's like to get punched in the face is different.
7:23 Dana, just came in his pants thinking about that KO and spends the rest of his answer turned red from the fact he's trying to hide it from the public.
