Cool concept, can u do part 2 showing this applies to actual reps? Need to SEE how this applies to different back exercises, thx

Sure, here is a video of me taking Kris Gethin through a back workout where we go through several different exercises addressing many of the same challenges and questions you'll likely have: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EQnXNamLg1g.html If you want something that's more in depth, I just released a 4 month long workout program called Hypertrophy Execution Mastery you can check out here: hypertrophymastery.com/ The first month's module teaches proper execution for back exercises while also providing custom MI40 workouts designed to bring your back up. Hope that helps and good luck in your training!

Thank you Ben, because of you and Josh Bryant, I'm using more muscle intention and less movement intention.

I've struggled to get a mind muscle connection with my left side on certain muscle groups. Particularly my lats. This has helped massively! Plus I feel the contraction through the whole range of motion for both lats. Thank you so much bpak!

Cable pullovers with a W-bar or long-ish rope really helped me learn and drill scapular depression. You can use them as a light warmup before heavy pressing or as an isolation exercise towards the end of your workout. What's great about the cable as opposed to other pullover variations is that you can keep tension throughout the movement. If you tilt your torso forward at the top and then extend through your thoracic spine at the bottom, you'll feel an intense lat contraction (the thoracic extension helps me keep my long head triceps from taking over at the bottom).

i literally just tried that with my arm and im amazed i never noticed this sooner - even unloaded I can feel a huge difference
@bettertraining3491
@bettertraining3491 5 лет назад
Totally agree with this, just like to add to not to do the more current trend of externally rotating the arm at the end of the movement - the latissimus is an internal rotator not an external rotator.

This really works... I flex the muscle I’m working first before each rep... you can FEEL the muscle you want to hit.

Used this today throughout most , couldn’t figure out how to do a couple, planes of my traps, & wow 😮, that was tough, but great. My lats are full of blood, but I’m not sore in any of my joints at all (which my bad shoulder usually does hurt some after back/shoulder days). Thanks Ben!!

Uh. I always thought you needed to retract the scapula first 🤔. Or pull them down at least.
@Ilethsamael
@Ilethsamael Год назад
One thing I really don't get anatomically: when doing a pushup that is not excessively challenging, I engage massively my lats, I would argue I can engage them more than my pecs. This does not happen if I pack the shoulders. How can this be? The lats should pull but I feel them while pushing.
@MaxwellHouse.
@MaxwellHouse. 6 лет назад
I always thought you said to retract your shoulder blade before you do your rep?
@MaxwellHouse.
@MaxwellHouse. 6 лет назад
Or does pushing down and wrapping around to your spine retract your shoulder blade enough?
@taezodataz8169
@taezodataz8169 6 лет назад
Go into maximum stretch at the end of the eccentric, retract and lower your shoulder blades and then start pulling down (or do both of the latter steps sinultaneously if you're already able to as they're both movements caused by lat contraction).
@MI40MuscleIntelligence
@MI40MuscleIntelligence 6 лет назад
Sort of this. The retraction is actually more depression of the scapula and by cueing people to "think down" instead of "back", that usually helps them in depressing scapula and engaging their lat. Apologies for any confusion, but we're constantly evolving at MI40 so that we are on the cutting edge so always go by the new videos and programs when in doubt. ;) Good luck with your training!

@user-wj6mz4jr2q 5 лет назад
MI40 Muscle Intelligence i thought about that also!! Isnt it retraction first?but what you are saying is right! The cue of ‘down’ to depress the scapula first actually helps me retract my scapula harder and engage the lats!! If i just think about retraction, my scapula might end up a little bit elevated which i may not notice!!thank you Ben!!inspiring as usual! Your podcast has changed my scope of thinking tremendously!! Wish you a great year ahead!!!

But I thought you want a tight shoulder to avoid injury? Im always trying to create tension by rotating my shoulder and pulling my lats and posterior delts tight and then initiating a lift.
