Applicable Apple I’ve recently asked a Social Justice professor about the Ivy League admissions scandal-that Asian students are subject to higher standards than their White counterparts. I asked this because I was genuinely curious as to how White Privilege would play into Asian applicants being penalized over Whites, from the Social Justice standpoint. She kept on saying Asians have been used by alt-rights and Neo Nazis as an excuse to justify racism. When I told her that didn’t seem to address my question directly, she got frustrated and started to tell me that: (a) Asians were newcomers that have not experienced racism in the US; and (b) they are over-represented anyway, so their enrollment needs to be capped. WHOA!!!!!!!!! First, (a) is factually incorrect, but she hadn’t even heard of the railroad workers or the Chinese Exclusion Act...when she is a self-proclaimed civil rights champion. She *was* aware of the Japanese American internment but, instead of developing a meaningful dialogue, she immediately asked if I was aware of the cruel things the Japanese (not Japanese American, of course!) government had done prior to that. Seriously. I didn’t realize Social Justice was big on scapegoating. Second, I pointed out to her (b) sounded incompatible with the Social Justice framework-to present hurdles to make things harder for people of color, under the entire premise of White Privilege. Her response? “Asians aren’t generally considered people of color because, unlike Blacks and Latinos, they chose to come to the US.” She added that I needed to do my homework and learn history before asking stupid questions. LESSON: Asians are VERY INCONVENIENT to Social Justice Worriers because Asian success exposes the fundamental flaws in their premise of White Privilege.

Applicable Apple Hi. This is all fascinating, isn’t it... By the way, she is colleague’s wife, and she’s a professor of education (apparently she teaches Social Justice Education). We all hate it when she comes to parties because she’d take every opportunity to lecture us on ethics and morality, like God has given her the gift of virtue nobody else has. Anyhow, this Social Justice Godess has never heard of Chinese railroad workers or the Chinese Exclusion Act-and thinks the internment of Japanese Americans was fully justifiable.

As a black woman I was not raised with people mentioning perspectives like Ben. And I can say this really opened my mind. I notice alot of times when people say things are about race that there is nothing to back it. Or often times the situation seems to be more about qualifications, culture and socio economic status than race. What I learned is that the lack of details can often distort the picture.

im a white man who grew up in a low income area, surrounded by a lot of black people. i was raised with the same ideology as a lot of the people around me. the government is racist, sexist and wants the low class to burn BUT when i learned smaller things that made sense i would be hated on by people in my community or they would give me a reason that is so illogical that it doesnt make sense. for example, me and a group (my brother and his friends) were talking about white on black crimes and they kept on saying that white people murder black people way too much and that most deaths for black people are because of white people, i pointed out that according to the FBI data its more likely that black people commit homicides then white people, and most homicides and manslaughter charges are intraracial meaning the victim and the killer are the same race. even though this is completely true they did not believe it and even went as far as to say that the government is lying to make black people look bad, even after i mentioned that the FBI data shows that in all crimes white people statistically do it more except for three which is homicide, burglary and gambling and still they didnt believe a word i said. i learned that, like you said, a lack of details can distort the picture, but sometimes people dont want to see the details and only want to see the picture they want. no matter what you tell them, some people wont listen and only few it one way and wont change, and sadly because of this nothing will change.

I'm sorry to hear that. I have dutch-german and Czechoslovakian family that struggled coming to America. Thought not as much as my Italian family did. My great great nonna lost two children to discrimination of communists (which they were not). One child lost a hand at a young age working in a factory. She did have too many kids lol (7 came over with them, 1 when they were here). They were immensely poor and did not expect it to be as bad as it was. All the kids had to work from a young age. The ones who could go to elementary school did but only one boy graduated high school. The others (died .. or) had to work. My great nonna saw a better economy during her prime but she and my polish great grandpa were fearful after what they grew up in so they had only one child. At least we're able to afford a small house before he lost his hearing to factory work and my great nonna lost him to pneumonia in their early 70s. She worked until she was 78 and was caretaker for me most of my youth until she died at age 90. There were no handouts for us. Nor for my paternal side. It was about working hard to hope you can pass your "wealth" down the line. For my paternal side they were less discriminated for sure but it was not easy and they were responsible people. Still along the way we have two generations later of many bad choices and still no silver spoon for being white. People forget how the vast majority of all people including white are lower class if not in poverty.

Yesterday I told my professor - in a discussion where he stated “if you disagree tell me” - that I did not believe white people were the only ones with privilege in this country. That I believed that white people do not benefit from a system that is solely meant to benefit them in today’s society. I said that we should not raise black children to see white people as villains bc that creates a victim hood that predetermines success. He said that my opinion was a disgrace to black people, likened it as if I were saying black people should “stop complaining”, and called it cowardly. I’m a black woman.

I also think it is important to teach the historical trauma of enslavement in America so that we do not perpetuate it, and thereby, creating a generation of victors NOT victims. I do not think there is current systems of racism and privilege that exist today though. I think black people have privilege too (affirmative action, college money, etc). I was asked to spearhead a report about why so many juveniles in detention were black. After two years of research...it came down to bias. One story stood out to explain what was happening. Police officer told us if two kids were playing baseball in a field and accidently broke someone's window...and police take both kids to the police station.... Parents are called. White kids parents show up...take the kid home, charges are likely dropped. Black kids parents don't show up to take their kid home. WHY? Because it was the policy the the police to run background checks on any minority that entered the police station...even f they just stopped to ask for directions! Why did the police discriminate in this way...? Because they knew minorities are more impoverished and were more likely to have outstanding warrants. So, because the parents fear the police (with good reason) what happens to the child whose parents would not pick him up? He goes to detention...sometimes for months!!!! How does that impact his thinking about the world? Good for you that your dad worked so hard....but it does not deny that systemic racism exists.

And our government approved it. Now this jerk is trying to lead you to believe that it had nothing to do with race when it's plainly says it in black-and-white. Not to sell to anyone but caucasians. I do wish Ben would have addressed incarceration differences. As a liberal person, one argument I've always found powerful for systemic racism is precisely this issue. With a quick Google, landed on the ALCU's website that says "Marijuana use is roughly equal among Blacks and whites, yet Blacks are 3.73 times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession." Perhaps one can explain this all away that in denser, urban areas, more arrests will happen so if more black people live in this area than white people, that's what causes it. That's still a gigantic problem related to race. If you want to say, like Bernie did, that it's really all a class problem and racism can basically be reduced to that, fine. But to me at most they seem incredibly wrapped up together. Because then that would lead people's perceptions to assume black people in general are poorer, and therefore likelier to be criminals, etc. and that would spill out to society's judgments in general.

There are a lot of details missing in those stats to draw any conclusions. First, are the use stats self-reported…have they checked for self reporting bias? Are these arrests just for possession or incidental possession charges in association with arrests for other crimes and/or possession of additional types of drugs? We already know there’s a crime rate disparity. Or perhaps it’s a behavior/visibility thing. It’s harder to get caught for possession when you smoke in a private residence and your drugs remain hidden than if you are out in public or in a car. Or a police presence thing. If people in your neighborhood are committing a lot of crime, maybe there is more police presence to get caught for petty crimes. Or a geographic thing- southeastern states with higher black populations probably have stricter drug laws than western states. Does “possession” exclude “possession with intent to sell” because there are reported disparities in the rate of drug dealing. Of course it is absurd the government is even meddling with the sale and possession of herbs and drug laws do have racist roots, but that doesn’t mean these modern stats are evidence of systemic racism.

Ben said if you live in a bad school district because it’s in a poor area, than just move to a richer area. One problem, if you’re poor you can’t just move to a rich area haha. The best solution, which a lot of European countries do is to give school districts equal funding, so you don’t have rich and then poor districts, that way regardless of where you live, if funding is equal and high enough, most of these areas will have improved schools. The reasons why we don’t do this, we don’t want to increase taxes on the wealthier.

Does systemic racism only affect black males? I’m a Hispanic woman, my parents did agricultural work all their lives. I almost didn’t graduate high school because I had no one to support my and tell me to get my act together. A counselor talked sense into me and I went to summer school and got all my missing credits. I began working as a receptionist at a hospital right after high school but I felt like I could do more. A couple of years after I started taking college classes at night while working full time. I didn’t speak English at twelve years old when I came into this country and now I have a bachelor’s degree. Most of my Hispanic friends dropped out of school and had babies when they were still teenagers. My point is, we all have the ability to make choices. I’m not rich by any means, but I feel successful. I have cousins in law enforcement, others who are professionals in different fields, and the ones who aren’t have moderately well earning jobs. Maybe, "African American" defines the difference with 'ease of conscience' for the speaker. So, isn't that a bit of pre-judgement going on in that persons head right there. Look, in my humble opinion, the right way to define people is simply to say 'Americans' and disregard race. But society isn't ready. Just look at Election Polls, they have to cut the pie to tell you how many black, white or asians voted. Go fill out a job application, they ask race and want to cut the pie to how they think. And, here's another one, employers can now ask you if you are under 40, just the same as asking if your are over 18. Congressional Law changes this nonsense. But I don't even hear talk of this! Because our ancestors voted in stupidity decades and decades ago, we live with this stupidity still. Tearing down statues won't fix it, we need to stop asking Americans to define themselves into compartments for the stupid Laws they want to label us with based on the color of our skin.

Segregation by name is definitely a racial thing not a class or social standard thing. U can't tell a person's class by their name. Secondly, the fact a person is raised by a single mother doesn't make him deprived automatically. Ben just gave his own POV, it doesn't mean the video is trash...it also has a point. Ben acknowledges there is prove that people bearing a certain name are likely to get a call back for an interview, it automatically gives an edge to gaining social wealth to a certain race than the other. That is valid on its own without any other factor affecting it.

They probably would have trouble getting callbacks but not at an equal rate as black applicants, It seems like "Cletus" would have a better time than "Jamal." "Cletus" with a criminal record (statistically) would get call backs for a job more often than a "Jamal" with NO criminal record (www.themarshallproject.org/2018/11/13/the-inspiring-life-and-career-of-devah-pager). Also, you have to remember, Karen, that these people's resumes are exactly the same, so the only difference is a NAME. At that point it should be a 50/50 shot, do you really believe "Cletus" and "Jamal" will get an equal amount of call-backs? Maybe... but the larger world of evidence outside of Ben Shapiro's video and the one study he talks about would not support that claim. I know I probably won't win your heart over in a RU-vid comment, but stop thinking Ben Shapiro is the end all be all of educational policy. Education is a complex issue, with complex policies that change state to state, having Ben Shapiro lay down some broad school choice talking points does little for the advancement of urban, suburban, and rural education across American.

@@el_main8723 I think most of the studies on african american discrimination in the work place have serious holes in them, especially when trying to associate them with the reason for "racial inequality" and unemployment among blacks. The point of this comment is actually quite. fair. If you research the names used in the studies and for this "educational" video you'll learn that the "african american" names are extremely rare and make up less then 1% of the black population. The vast majority of black people actually have non racially distinct names, so using this study to conclude broad racial discrimination would, well, not hold up in the court of law. The other studies use black actors in interviews, like really? You expect a low budget actor to perform better then an actual prepared job applicant...

It is assuming there are no rich or middle class black people living in better neighborhoods with better schools, and it is also assuming that there are no poor white people living in poverty and going to poor schools. It is also assuming that the poor black people has no access to better jobs just up the road from there. I live in a mixed neighborhood with middle class blacks, including one who paid cash for his home just across the road. He has his own business, drives nice cars and trucks and the other black neighbors are also driving very nice cars, equal to or better than the one I'm driving. It is also assuming that the reason the white boy lives in a better neighborhood is because he is racist, not because his father and mother just simply did better like my black neighbors have done. Too many assumptions based on very weak evidence.

No one? Literally no one? Nobody ever talks about how Asian and Punjabi Americans are almost always educated and successful. Hell, most of them come to this country with barely a pot to piss in. Maybe the only thing that is "oppressing" anybody is piss poor choices in life, not "systematic racism".

For whatever reason, black on black violence such as this is completely off the table for discussion. Even though most homicide is people of the same race and so on. It's PAINFULLY clear that all of the white people pushing this systemic racism ideology are not doing it out of love for black people, rather hatred for the upper class. Which is sad because most of those white people are baby upper class members themselves.

@@ayoutubeuser7613 belief that redlining existed in the past and had detrimental effects to minority wealth up to today is scary? Or the statistical data that blacks are least likely to be approved for home loans or hired due to their names on job applications for having african/black sounding name? Or is it the general notion that systemic racism exists with solid data collected by many sources (Multiple University research groups such as Washington, Monmouth. US data sources such as the Federal Reserve and FBI gov too). There may be fear of having people know the existence of systemic racism, but a different fear also exist under that notion. Fear that, in knowing this as a minority (particular when you're black), there's still that chance of being denied the American dream of financial stability regardless of how hard you worked for it. The system works against you from the moment you're born into poverty.

I’ll always say that we have more of a class issue than a race issue here in America. However, I feel like this video is missing the mark. Here’s what I did like: I thought you did a great job countering examples the video discussed that were taken out of context, providing deeper explanations. I particularly liked your argument against black people having a lower education due to systemic racism, using the example of black females earning higher education in comparison to white females with the same economic background. But it seems like your only view on systemic racism is that it’s used as poor excuse to call ALL American institutions racist which you believe is not true. But let’s be real. There are actual examples of systemic racism in SOME institutions, just like there are people who misuse these terms to avoid analyzing the actual problem. So why dont you provide examples of American institutions that are actively racist today? For example, policing. Law enforcement and military have been infiltrated by white supremacists* for a LONG time. This obviously leads to an increase in harassment, arrests, & deaths (which is prevalent among multiple lower class groups), but particularly affects minority groups such as African Americans or Latinos. White supremacy has been intertwined with our law making since the beginning of this country and we are seeing the same ideologies exist today within American institutions. Now wouldn’t you call this systemic racism? Furthermore, you didn’t address the psychological affects of systemic racism. You can see that taking away the right to own a home through redlining or restricting higher education through segregation will have negative affects on future generations. Black parents during this time couldn’t teach their kids how to attain wealth through education and property ownership, but rather through working blue collar jobs to make ends meet. And not to mention, the generational trauma that can come through navigating these obstacles as a black person on top of dealing with other forms of racism. Not to say that minorities are the ONLY people who experience this since racism and classism do intersect, but we are seeing this significantly more in minority groups. All in all, I think this piece is biased. Even though you do a great job in remaining neutral, you still commit to a conservative viewpoint by saying you “debunked” systemic racism without going deeper. It’s lazy, just like the video you analyzed. You’re so much smarter than these labels you put on yourself. Serving clickbait for conservatives to re-affirm their inept beliefs by having a much more articulate white dude explain it for them. *s3.documentcloud.org/documents/402521/doc-26-white-supremacist-infiltration.pdf
