My review of the Benchmade Proper series, focusing on the new 318-2 model. I love the Benchmade Proper in general, but is the new upgraded version worth the increase in price?

Northwest Knives has it on discontinued clearance for $142! Get one while you can. I bought both, sheepsfoot and Clip Point. 🎉🎉 👊

You know me and slipjoints... not gonna happen. I think it stems from too many accidents as a kid with Grandpa's "Case" knives or Swiss Army Knives or whatever but I can't get behind a knife without a lock. While these are nice, good steel, good handle material, and excellent craftsmanship, I could not justify paying $125.00 for something I would be reluctant to use. They are pretty and I might, MIGHT, carry one on a special occasion for extremely light use such as opening letters. Great video my friend as always.
@GearedTowardGear1
@GearedTowardGear1 5 лет назад
I can respect that. A lot of people feel the way you do about non-locking knives. Then there’s people who think any knife that has a lock is blasphemy because it’s not traditional, lol. If I carry a slipjoint, 85% of the time it’s in addition to another locking folder. Thanks for watching bro!!

Good honest review and I agree with your thoughts. Although a bit different in that I like canvas micarta more than CF. The blade steel is not worth the jump in price alone. Atb paddy 👍☘️😀

The Proper looks very cool, though I'm like you in that I rotate quite a few traditional knives and really only need a good 1095 (the heat treat on some of the old manufacturers, 50+ years, is awesome!) I could see if you were set on the carbon fiber covers, a few bucks more is worth it. Thanks for an excellent review!
@GearedTowardGear1
@GearedTowardGear1 5 лет назад
Hey, JJ! Your absolutely right - does anyone really NEED S30V or even S90V? I would say the majority do not, maybe some do. A well treated 1095 blade will get the job done for sure, I just love this design so much I can’t help myself, lol. Thanks for watching!

On the fence buying one of these since I’ve heard from more than one RU-vidr about the lazy snap, walk n talk and not so strong half stop. Thoughts?
@dark_gravity_edc
@dark_gravity_edc 5 лет назад
To me S90V, S110V, M390, REX121, etc.... makes more since on a Proper than it does a 940 or similar "hard use" tactical utility style knife. Those steels are too chip prone for hard use IMO. They are great cutters and to me belong on a dedicated cutter. I think the Proper fits that better than a lot of the knives you see those steels on. Great review and video.
@GearedTowardGear1
@GearedTowardGear1 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching, Tad! You’re absolutely right, those steels can absolutely be prone to chipping if used improperly.

The canvas micarta is so sexy. I think you’d really enjoy it if you can justify the price tag for yourself. I obviously can, lol - they are phenomenal.

Awesome looking knife. If I get one someday it would be a lower priced one. But probably would get a couple decent budget friendly locking blades instead. Ha
@GearedTowardGear1
@GearedTowardGear1 5 лет назад
Nothing wrong with that! I think for most people the $120 version is plenty. But regardless of quality and materials many people have a hard time justifying the cost. Which is fair, it’s not cheap. Thanks for watching!

Ok but we're getting g10 and m390 from hogue for about 160 in a griptilian form factor in limited volume so...
@GearedTowardGear1
@GearedTowardGear1 5 лет назад
True. I think if the Hogue were carbon fiber it would be closer to the price of this knife. I think that Ritter is somewhat of a unicorn, though. Doug Ritter himself said his goal when seeking out manufacturers was to create the most affordable heavy duty high quality folder possible that could be made in the USA. And I think he may have. I also think Hogue is likely making less in their profit margins than Benchmade in this example. Although, even things like sprint run Spyderco PM2’s are coming in G10 & M390 USA Made for that same $160 price tag. It’s all relative I guess, lol.
@Brewhound77
@Brewhound77 5 лет назад
@@GearedTowardGear1 the knives are definitely in different categories but i guess my point is the materials in the upgraded proper are not the reason for the drastic increase in the price
@GearedTowardGear1
@GearedTowardGear1 5 лет назад
So what is the reason? Do you not think that CF, S90V, and and the added processes of coating the liners and DLC coating the blade account for the $85 difference?
@Brewhound77
@Brewhound77 5 лет назад
@@GearedTowardGear1 yeah i think the original proper is already sold at a very high profit margin and the $85 extra for the premium is much more than the actual difference in materials cost. Its such a cool knife and in pretty high demand so BM can easily sell it for such a large profit.
@GearedTowardGear1
@GearedTowardGear1 5 лет назад
I think the argument that the plain ole Proper is overpriced at $120 is fair, but every knife I could find with the same upgrades going from G10>CF and S30>S90 seemed to have a very similar percentage increase in price. But as I said, to even entertain spending $200 on the new Proper you have to be ok with the original being $120 and a lot of people aren’t. I personally think the original is worth every bit of $120, or maybe better stated that I get $120 of value from it, but I can’t justify spending $200+ on the new one based on my usage.
