I agree on cutting benchmade a _little_ slack. This really isn't a traditional slipjoint in many ways. I think the whole backspring issue has to do with the ability to take it apart. A really potent spring is going to cause issues for anybody who takes apart a slippy. Nice little knife, love micarta in general. Great review! BTW, micarta is _extremely forgiving._ If you scrape it or damage it, sandpaper from medium course to extra fine will bring it right back. So, if you wanted to take a dremel to it - you should have no problem polishing it back to where you want.
Thanks Tony i might just fo a video on it. I agree with the back spring being a nightmare but it shouldn't stop them. In truth i cant se me ever having to do it other than for interest. But yes they are a mare. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️
Nice review Paddy! I felt it was very honest, but also balanced and keeping things in perspective for what it is. At this point, this knife is discontinued, but I have a supplier who still has one in stock, so I'm going to pick one up. I'm also a big Benchmade fan and just want one as a collector and it looks nice to use for light EDC tasks. If I have to go knife hunting for wild boar, I'll take my Adamas Fixed Blade (😉), but for cutting open boxes and packages this should be just fine, and it is quite a classy knife I think.
Congrats on 4k my friend! Crazy to hear you say "let me get my Hinderer" while you're talking about a Benchmade. Your collection and your channel have come such a long way, and I'm proud to have been with you since some of the earlier days. Great vid.
This sells for about $119.00 range here in the U.S. and for that kind of money those problems should not exist. Thanks for your honesty. Enjoy your day and a cup o' tea.
Great review Paddy! I'm a little on the fence when it comes to modern traditionals. I get the new materials and a somewhat new design, but they ceep doing mistakes that has been fixed a long time ago on the old patterns. Thank you very much for sharing my friend. 👍
I am in love with the blade shape on the Proper, a sheepsfoot with a slight belly, to me one of the best working knife shapes. I have had a large RR carbon stockman in my pocket for the last couple of months, while you were griping about blades closing and backsprings I was comparing the carbon, it meets all your criteria and then some. I must say even with the gripes the Proper is still a desireable knife but I will wait for the price to come down or pick up a copy if anyone ever makes one. I have ground down those bird beak handles on a couple of fixed blades but never had a folder with quite that shape of grip.
I've been meaning to ask if you've seen the Maserin Scout? It also fits into the modern traditional mould, Sodbuster-ish with micarta scales, D2 blade, and screwed construction. Also a lot more in my price range at a little under €50 :P. Came out pretty recently I believe, so I'd love to see a review on it as there don't seem to be any.
That is a great addition to you slip joints and it's a benchmade so defiantly something different for the collection. Thanks for sharing and doing such a good review Paddy.
Hi Paddy, Working my way through your older Video's, so not sure if you will ever see this. Being new to sharpening, how would you do it with Cardboard? Thanks, J.
Hi, Paddy, truly a very nice modern slip joint. I do not have any micarta handles but would like the deminn one s dearly. My best slip joint is the Case Sodbuster Jr. . That's about it. Nice video. Piggy.
I don't have but a couple slip joints. Been thinking of buying more though. I do like the looks of the Proper, but honestly, I doubt I'll buy one. There are plenty others more well made and much slicier. I think Benchmade just doesn't have the experience with slip joints. For that money you can get a nice GEC, or a case. For even less, Rough Riders are hard to beat. Nowhere near GEC quality but still a damn good knife for a small amount of money. Good honest review Paddy, thanks!
Well you just made my day mate. You are so welcome and i hope to get to know you over the next few months. Just dont watch to many they can affect your mental health. Lol😜Atb paddy 😊☘️👍
stunning understated little knife, i would like to get one at some point in micarta. its not being a flash gimmick looks like an honest working tool albeit expensive. cheers for sharing :)
Excellent review my friend. I was looking to buy one of these, I may go on the used market. On the Micarta, since there are string fibers in the epoxy like resin you might get a little fuzzing if you grind on it. Of course a little epoxy could seal that. Thanks for your time Paddy.
Thank you for that info im still a bit wary of doing it yet. But the secondary market is the right place to lose the butterfly tax. We just dont see them on the uk sites. Or i dont anyway. Lol. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️
Hello across the Pond... I own a Clip Point Proper, and I absoultly love it. Mine is in Micarta Scales as well. It feels wonderful in the hand. Must have been lucky with mine, as it dosen't have the back spring issues. There's something about the way S30V takes an edge, and holds it so well. Benchmade prices are personal, but I'll take a BM over a Spiderco any day. Maybe it's their classic look that catches me. Buy one if you can afford the extra money, you will not regret it.
Prefer the clip point, but agree with your points. But has anyone told Benchmade? If the blade had a kick that matched the handle that would possibly be better than a forward choil but would protrude (outside the handle) when closing.
@@paddyspotatopeelers2154 Thanks for taking us along on the ride, I'm afraid I had a little prejudiced towards the slip joint and now no more, I do have a drawer of your favorites, RR. Cheers
Thank you sir i really appreciate it. Slip joint are not that scary our fore fathers use them and its only since more mordern knives have come about that the danger was put in them to help sales of locking knives. In my opinion. Lol. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️
It’s a beautiful looking knife I love the blade shape and the micarta scales seal it for me I will own one haha great to see your review mate hope you and your family are well.
I got the same knife from aliexpress for $25 and its amazing., with equal or better quality than the original benchmade. Flawless finish and action. you cant tell lit from the real proper.
Beautiful knife I bought the same but clip-point version in the micarta I also made a carry pouch with dr martens shoe leather after cleaning sterilization ect. it’s in my front small pocket as an edc great knife use it well :) mine came perfect all round :) really strong back spring I have to apply hard on blade to close to first stop then snap second. i’m sorry you received a weak back spring :( oh I bought mine off a reseller on amazon ca for $130 cad. waited for a price drop
This was a good one paddy! Thank you! I’m getting one Wednesday and I was happy to hear your thoughts on it! I’m so excited for it! It will be my fourth benchmade this month! Do you think I’ll be happy with it as an EDC knife? I just do little cutting tasks like cutting tape on boxes and opening letters! I’ve been looking for a good slip joint and I’m a benchmade FANBOY at the moment! I’m trying to collect all different types of benchmade knives! Do you have any suggestions for what my next benchmade should be? I have the mini grip with 20CV. The Osborne 940 with S30V. The blue bugout. And finally I’ll have the proper with the clip point and the micarta this coming Wednesday! Give me an idea for my next one! Thanks paddy!
Benchmades and Spidercos. You went from budget knives to some of the higher end production knives. I had been wondering about the Proper. I was put off by the price. I thought it was high for what you get. I don't know that much about slipjoint knives. Thanks for the review. I still think I will start with Rough Riders or GEC before going to the Proper to get used to slipjoints first. Thanks for the review it was great. Enjoy your tea see you on your next video.
@@paddyspotatopeelers2154 I figured I better try some before going to that price range. Would you agree that it is a good plan or is it so good I should make the leap??
Theres the blue G10 one with the black blade too. It was supposedly a limited run of 500, but it’s still for sale all over the place, so not too sure. I like these knives, or I wouldn’t have bought 2, but it’s no GEC!
The butterfly tax you mention means I'm unlikely to own a Benchmade anytime soon unless I come across an amazing deal, but the Proper is a great looking knife. And I hope that they iterate on it and refine it a bit to get the fit and finish you'd expect on a pricey slipjoint like that. To be honest I'm more interested in your thoughts on the mini Griptilian you showed in an earlier vid, as I'm not that into slipjoints (though I did get me a Rough Rider after one of your vids). And the mini grip with a spydiehole is what I would get if I ever got over myself and paid the butterfly tax. Still probably not the fancy version you have though :P Thanks for the review.
Thank you and your right its just a fancy mini grip but it was only about £20 more than a basic one so i had to. Didnt i. Lol. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️review next weekish.
@@paddyspotatopeelers2154 It's €130 vs €214 over at K&T, so that is a great deal. It's without a doubt my preferred version as the G10 seems nicer than their FRN, but that butterfly tax man. It's on top of all the other taxes to be fair, but still.
Great review! As with all your others, honest and to the point. Just one question, where did you get the Lionsteel Roundhead? I've been having trouble finding it in Europe/having it shipped here.
Thank you for your kind words sir and im afraid i got and american friend to buy it from collector knives and ship it to me. Customs didnt stop it on that occasion. Atb paddy. 👍😊☘️
I’ve done short, and not such a good review of this (and the blue one). I have similar thoughts on the fit & finish, though I hadn’t had an issue with the hook on the butt. What I really like though, is the non-polished micarta. I’ve lots of nice shiny knives that scratch up a bit as you use them, but the micarta just look better and better. My chief irritation is the jimping - it’s obviously unnecessary, encourages misuse of the knife and the two different patterns look crap. It’s still a great little knife though, so good I bought it twice! I’d still buy an Enzo for the price though 😉
paddys potato peelers you need to do some queue management. Just, when you do get an Enzo, I recommend either the carbon fibre or titanium/G10 full flat grinds over the micarta Scandi grind. These are too small for bush rafting, but perfect for edc!
I'll stick with my pioneer x. Same warranty as benchmade, better fit and finish on the springs, and it doesn't close on me because the springs are crazy strong. Then it has multiple tools. And all that for less than half the price of this.
Nice review but seems more negative than possitive for a knife of that price. For me the fact that it is their first slippy is no excuse for getting things wrong, certainly not in that price range. I Always hit the thumbs up and i am happy for you that you have these knives but i was happy to hear you will be doing some budget knives soon. Do you have any Whitby and co slip joints? They seem quite good looking and are definately budget. Good health and stay safe.
I had one mate but it wasnt to good to be honest. Ive just got a wright and son which i will review soon. Also a few RRs. Dont worry it goes through we ups and down periods as far as budget and expense knives go. Thanks for watching. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️
I hope you do not go down the same road as other knife reviewers you start out humble and then you start buying these high-end expensive knives that you're afraid to lose because of the price you paid for it please try to remember who brought you to the dance and that's a working person who buys good solid working knives that they use day in and day out please don't forget the workers that brought you to the dance
Bought a few Ganzos and Fura's and a Grizzly Ridge Benchmade . Was there a difference, yes, was it over a hundred quid difference, absolutely not. The Chinese have for hundreds of years been great blade makers . I've left a post about this a while back. The Chinese tech and innovation is going forward at a pace. In the future maybe some of these pieces could be collectable, so keep the packaging. I haven't.
I wish they lowered the price to say $80 (make some profit still) and made more versions like a drop point spearpoint etc and made the blade full flat grind.
magic they have clip point it’s better imo than the sheepsfoot and cheaper on amazon ca. they have them in blue g-10 sheepsfoot only black coated red g-10 satin blade both clip and sheep and micarta clip and sheep
