I wish I never got into slipjoints, they are the watches of the knife world. So much more expensive for no real benefit whatsoever besides "it's cool".
Such a great review Nick. I don't feel like I need to watch another video on this knife to make a decision, and that's saying something. You're the best man.
I really like my micarta Proper and have toyed with the idea of getting the CF one on and off for a year now. I might just have to take the plunge now. Great review!
I have the sheepsfoot version, and I think what jumps out about this piece is it looks and feels so refined and lovely. The action is non-traditional, but that feels like it’s by design to me, and while I like trad W&T, this thing does feel good in its own way. It’s my first S90v blade and despite what some say about that steel it sharpens exceedingly well to an absolutely laser sharp edge.
I’ve 2 Propers, not to mention a pile of other knives in this vein, but I still keep looking at it and probably will buy one.... just as they iterate it in to something super special and then halve the price of the poorer version I just bought!
@@TECHFIGHTER that first production number is worth much more to me its not about money worth its something special, if i ruin it or lose it, then it doesn't exist anymore it won't be made again and its gone, its not that i don't carry it at all, i have it for light and gentleman use only, for everyday use i have a 940 and i am happy with that.
4:13 I thought they were PVD coated stainless steel liners? Titanium might justify the price a little more for me seeing as how the thing is beautiful but you're spot on with the JE mades being also available and cheaper!
You need to have a look at the new ZT 0230 it's blown me away tbh,the detents are perfect and the knife smooth in all the right places,no blade clank as the blade enters the body on closing etc,put it in a wee GEC slip and disappears into the pocket, second to none is putting it mildly
I have two Propers and he’s right about the action, it’s not awesome. If benchmade isn’t going to improve the action, they should add a nail nick to the other side to make it easier to pinch pull open. I just put copper Flytanium scales on one of them and I’m really liking the added heft. Makes it feel substantial.
Hey Nick, how do you cope with the loss of a knife? I just lost my benchmade mini crooked river to the town dump’s cardboard compactor and I miss it terribly.
Got one of these after they announced they were discontinuing them for 2020. Can't say I enjoy nor don't. It's a something I'll probably keep as a spare but nothing like being my main.
Great Review Nick! And actually you’re a Brilliant Man just to make facts clear🤣! Keep up the good work Brother! 🙌🏻✌🏻😀💯💎 Where do I order this knife by the way?
Hey Nick, when you do the size comparisons could you add a victorinox pioneer. Especially the smaller knives. Anyway, my 2 cents. Keep up the great content. 😎🤘🏻 Edit: I just ordered one after your review. 😏
I've been interested in slip joints lately. Just picked up my first one, a Cold Steel Lucky One. Yes it has questionable billboarding but it was on sale direct from their site for $45 which is a steal for full carbon and S35VN. Could you do a review of Aaron Frederick's Trash Panda? I love when he comes on the Knife Nuts podcast, funny dude and would like to pick up one or 2 of his knives one day.
I carry a Case Trapper. It would be great it you did a review of a one of those, as it beats this piece of junk on all counts. Perhaps make it the "Spyderco Delica" of traditional blades :)
Not as good as some, better than others. I read they use 420HC, same as Buck and Gerber among others. My case was put in a box the day after my daughter was born. She will get it when she is older.
I generally like a clip point aesthetically better than a sheepsfoot, but to me the lines of this knife flows much more smoothly on the sheepsfoot than the clip point. They finally have come up with another version of the proper that looks as good as the micarta original run. The red g10 looks terrible and the limited dlc/blue g10 run was horrible idea for a slipjoint. And I like blue. As far as the fit and finish, I've had very good luck with benchmade QC in the past, but I handled 3 of these at a brick and mortar and none of them were well centered. Yikes.
Great video as always bud! Hey if you get a chance could you swing past Metal Effort’s place to check if he is still alive. Seriously do you know if he gave up on the channel or is just busy with other stuff
When the lower end version is better in fit and finish... you've got problems. This shouldn't be what "American made" should represent - more expensive but not as good.
Can't believe I am going to write this but that price for a Benchmade isn't that offensive with the materials involved and it gets points for USA made from me, at least.
I'll never buy Benchmade again. I made that decision back when the Altitude came out and they wanted north of $200 for 3 inches of m390 with a joke for scales
@@profd65 given his opinion that the price tag on this is high. I feel that my comment about not buying Benchmade because of prices showed an agreement with the posters thoughts.
I was just thinking the same thing. I have the BM 319-2 (the sheeps foot version of the knife in this vid) and ZT 0230. They're similar enough to make a good comparison. The ZT slices better. But if Nick doesn't like the action on the Proxy ;) he's going to hate the action on the 0230.
Nathaniel Easterling I haven't handled either the ZT 0230 or the Proper but from the reviews I see the 0230 has a stronger first detent and a positive half stop. I don't know how strong the second detent is on the ZT but we're going to get the good the great and the bad and the ugly! Which one do you prefer?
I have been cut by BM 319's useless half stop 24 hours ago.On my view the only function of a half stop is to give a break when the spring is very stiff. But before that, why we just pick a spyderco urban ukpk, which is the only "proper" slip joint design in this world?
You can get them in the other shape, 319-2. If that's you're only hold up I'd look into it. I took me a while to decide which one to get, to be honest I chose arbitrarily (by the lower first production run number the particular store I was at had). Both are nice. www.bladehq.com/item--Benchmade-Proper-Sheepsfoot-Slip--97554
I'll save you the time and trouble of watching yet another Nick Shabazz Benchmade review by boiling every such review down to its essentials: "It's a great knife but forget about that, I'm going to spend half the time pissing and moaning about the price and the supposed fit-and-finish problems. Oh, and it's made in America."
