I always come back to this wonderful performance, by far the best Schumann I´ve heard and he was only 22 years! Beautiful sound!

Personally, He's my favorite cellist in terms of style and all.... even though he's not super big yet like du pre, yo yo ma, and rostropovich... But!!... i just love the way he plays the cello. like everything. His performance on Elgars cello concerto is by far the best i have ever heard... beats du pre and mork and all.... Just his playing stlye and the way he plays each note.... they're perfect length and not rushed and uuuuggghh (fanboying). Just my opinion

I always come back to this recording... by far the best interpretation of Schumann I've heard. Not too rough, not too soft and frilly.

At the age of 22 Steven Isserlis certainly didn´t play Schumann like this, therefore nobody knew him outside of GB! Benedict K.is blessed by the Gods!

As to the concert master: Well, she is leading... That's why she moves at lot more than the tutti players, it's part of her job. I just wonder why you don't criticise Mr Kloeckner for his movements... Anyway, I listen to the music. If I watch the players, I can always shut my eyes if their movements distract me. ;-) And I totally agree with you about Kloeckner's playing!

Great performance and arrangement. The most glaring difference from the orchestrated version i think comes at the 5:30 mark. How does one emulate the bold austerity of the horn? Though not pictured i believe you scored the solo for first cello(?) which seems natural...only there is no dichotomy of sound between 1st cello and solo cello. To accent the statement made by the horn consider instead perhaps first violin playing non div octaves in lower register?

DurpenHeimer Doesn't the first chair violinist have to make big movements and exaggerate in order for the orchestra to follow and stay in tempo and all. IDK. I've heard my orchestra director a few times point out, "come on move, you're leading the orchestra. that's why you're sitting first chair". know what i mean?
@DurpenHeimer

There are several humble ways to lead your section. I consider her motions as an attempt to take away some of Kloeckner's presence or trying to even compete with him. It's one thing to lead a section, but it is another to showboat.

Jonathan Chan Sometimes, excess movement makes it too hard to follow. No movement is worse, I think, but the first violinist in this is waaay overdoing it. It doesn't even have to be subtle, you can make big gestures; but leaning forward a full 60 degrees (see 1:30) is a bit, well, classless. It might be ok in a chamber performance; but not a chamber performance with a soloist. With a soloist, that kind of movement is just show-offy.

OK, you're allowed to use the centerfold of "Playboy" while enjoying the music. Or close your eyes - maybe it's just music and not a show...
