My 2nd year with Anise Hyssop. I planted it from seed and didn't realize it was a perennial until it came back this year. It took over the whole whiskey barrel and was the center bouquet in the garden. The bees just love it. I was trying to plant more beneficial flowers and I scored!! I also use it for tea.❤

Hyssop and Anise Hyssop are different plants. Both are in the mint family though and have similar benefits

I live in the Netherlands, Europe, I think it is zone 8. A few years ago I gave away some tomato seedlings, and the lady gave me this tiny little plant, calling it Bergamot, as a gift. She said it is nice for tea. When it started to grow and bloom, I realized it is something else, and I think it is Anise Hyssop. Looks like it, smells like it. This tiny little plant grew as big as I am, (about 1.68 m), and looked beautiful. Bees love it! It smells gorgeous. I had no idea what to do with it, so thank you very much for this video! I didn't find that much about it. I live on the first floor, grow in pots and tubs, and since, every springtime I have to go out and pull out about a million of the baby Anise Hyssop plants... They are in EVERY pot and tub on the balcony, they spread that much. I love the stuff for the bees alone, but since they grow pretty big, and my balcony is not that big, I have to. Next year, I will save some more of the plants. Didn't know they are good for that much! Thanks Heidi! Much love!

I got a pkg of seeds ten yrs ago and never had to buy more. I'm in Bellingham, WA about 30 minutes south of the border, and it's been very hardy here. I have a huge deer problem so mine have always been growing in pots on the porch. I've found that during the recent hotter summers the plant became much more woody, fiberous, and funky/bitter, so moving them to partial shade made for much tastier leaves. My favorite use for it is in pan-cooked white fish or seafood. A dozen leaves chiffonaded and tossed in with the butter, white wine and shallot. My goodness. It's restaurant-quality taste for when you don't happen to have a bottle of Pernod licorice liqueur in the cupboard.

I’m in zone 4b in Northern Michigan. The summers are hot and the winters are cold. My hyssop is a perennial and grows very well. Right now, I don’t use it medicinally but grow it for the bees. They love it!

Northern lower peninsula Michigan here (near Lake Huron) and I grew it for our first time this year. Started indoors from seed and it took off after transplant! I got a couple of really nice harvests this year while still leaving a good amount for the bees before winter hit. Planning on having some tea this winter with it... possibly a blend of the hyssop and some of our stevia leaves

I’m in Washington too about 30 min south of Seattle. I’ve had this in my garden since 2022. I bought the plant not sure where. It seeds itself all over the yard. It’s beautiful and the bees love it. I’ve started to pull some of the starts out when I see them. Sometimes I put them in pots or areas that need a pretty plant and other times if I catch early enough I just eliminate it. I have never used the plants in salves or tincture not baking but would love to use it in this way as I developed that skill. I saw another video of a gal showing how easy it is to save seeds and realized it’s no wonder it spreads all over. I find this plant to be so lovely in the garden but also so very practical.

I have recently added Hyssop and Anise Hyssop to my garden here in zone 3, high altitude mountain region in Montana. I love making teas with it but also have made a skin cream that has hyssop, calendula, chamomile, and wild geranium in it. I appreciate that hyssop is not a plant that all my deer, elk and moose like to graze on!

This is my most reliable and favorite herb in my garden. My kids love it as tea and we make cookies with it, and always use it for cough. I planted some in my garden 15 years ago and it has always reseeded and grown with no help since. We get little rain in the summer and high heat (Colorado) it does fine with that and even grows in the shade too. Love this plant.

I make tea with cat nip, lemon balm and Tulsi. Had got from a friend last year, couldn't find online, but I have 2 plants this year and I hope they survive my winter!

I've been growing this for years mainly for the amazing volume of bees and other pollinators that it attracts. I planted it once and it has come back year after year. Gorgeous plant. This year, thanks to this video, I will be making teas, tinctures, poultices etc since learning the ways to use it!

I live in Iowa (zone 5a) and always grow it for the pollinators. It reseeds itself easily and I just move the plants around. I also use it in tea, etc. One different way to use it is to mince it pretty small and add to cut up melon, especially cantaloupe. sooo good! Just a little bit in Italian red pasta sauces is delicious, too!

Zone 5 in far southeast Wisconsin. I started growing it for the bees 3 years ago but I love the aroma and taste for tea. I just harvested some of the leaves for tea, no flowers yet.. It does self-seed in my butterfly/bee garden and I find new plants every year.

I got anise hyssop from a nursery last summer. I live in MN 4b and didn't realize I could leave it outside. I brought it in doors for the winter and it is still growing well in the pot. I have dried some and used it in tea with sage and mint during covid. I usually just grab a few different herbs I've dried to use in my tea. They all have some kind of medicinal benefits. I'll have to try it in some new ways. Altho I don't like licorice flavor, I don't notice it when mixed in my teas. Thank u. I love these herb videos.

I grow Hyssop Officinalis, which I understand is related to anise Hyssop, but not closely. I live in NC zone 8a, with relatively temperate winters and high humidity most of the year. I primarily like to use it in my teas when I'm having sinus problems (which is moderately frequent b/c of my allergies). It's really helpful if I have a sinus headache too.

I live in the piedmont area of NC. I got my plants two years ago, and they have done great. My husband keeps bees, and I initially got them because I was told bees love them. I put them in my pollinator garden and they are the stars of the show when they're blooming. Not only bees but butterflies love them. I didn't even think of consuming any.. until now. I will definitely try the leaves in tea. Your herb talks are always interesting thank you.

I should call myself 'the accidental herbalist' because that's how many of my herbs come about. LOL I bought some seeds and tried planting them in 'new ground' (first year tilled ground--we have heavy clay so it's rough getting anything to grow in first year tilled ground) and I didn't get much out of the seeds~~a few small starts. The next year, and the following (this past summer) it has spread and is doing great! I normally don't care for the taste of licorice, but I'm finding that I crave this plant. I drink tea made of it for the flavor, and I like it's relaxing effect. I also kept it on hand when we had the big C, in case we needed it for cough. Like you said, I try not to tamp a cough unless it's for a bit of rest, so I never ended up using it for that. It's a beautiful plant! We live in the Appalachian Mts of WV at around 2400'. Hot, humid summers and cool winters with bouts of actual cold temps. (It's around 55F here today.) God bless!

SO glad you addressed this wonderful herb! I grew it once, only once, tried last two years to get it established, but nothing. I was very disappointed. I will try to start it indoors this next spring. I'm only an hour east of you, so I don't see why it won't work. And I do have a greenhouse

My hyssop seeds ai got from you did sooo well I could send you some back!! 🤣🤣🤣. I love this plant. It is fabulous for the bees. I have it in a prominent spot by our windows so we can watch the bees, it stands almost 6’ tall in wide clumps and it looks awesome in our cottage garden off the deck. It looks beautiful with heirloom lime zinnias, hydrangeas and white single petal roses. I grow it need the veg garden for pollination too. I plan on tincturing and drying a bunch this year. This is one of my favorite plants thanks to you. I haven’t used it in tea yet but now I have so much I will.

Funny that you should post this. I just learned yesterday that I have been growing anise hyssop in pots for years without knowing where or how I got it. I thought it was lemon balm and knew that the bees like it. I live in W. Montana, zone 5. I’m going to have to start utilizing it. Thanks

I just love your channel. I grow anise hyssop or maybe I should say, it grows itself quite prolifically in my area. I live in the Bitterroot Valley, Montana (NW Montana) and my anise hyssop as well as catnip self sows profusely and I just let it. I was looking for some ideas of what to do with it when I came upon your video! I air dry it because we live in an area of very low humidity (less than 20% most of the summer), and then I put it in mason jars to use ad lib throughout the year. The bees love it; and, my neighbors have hives - I'll be interested to taste the honey because most of the neighbor's bees hang out in my garden - all over the anise hyssop! I'll bet that honey is delish! I am going to try the flowers in a salad, and even the fresh leaves. Thanks for your very thorough review of this amazing herb. Oh, btw, it is so pretty growing along with yellow yarrow, orange/yellow marigolds and other annual flowers. The only thing I would say about it that could be a negative is that it spreads like wildfire and so, be careful where you plant it. Like I said, I just let mine sprawl where ever it wants, but if someone had a specific type of flower, veggie or herb garden, it can easily take over - just like the catnip! Blessings to you and yours. PS (I like to make sachets out of it and add some lavender to it as well - throw it in the bathtub for a relaxing bath!

The best slug remedy I found was making a spray of 50/50 ammonia and water. Then, 1 tsp. Murphy's oil soap per 1 gallon of water. (The soap makes the ammonia solution stick to the slugs).

This is the first time in a long time I have heard a new one. I do not know how many times I have had people tell me about beer in dishes (does not work here) and many others that do not work in our area. I take it with this though, you have to go spray the slugs directly?

@@RainCountryHomestead Yes. I had a big infestation, and I would go out nightly and spray them, while they munched down on my plants. I never saw this spray harm any plants (or pets).

I read they don't like crushed egg shells - like crawling across glass. I saved and dried a bunch in the oven then crushed them as small as I could. Now I have a large container at the ready to sprinkle when & where needed.

Slugs love cat food. They try to take over my cats dish at night. Maybe you could bait a trap with that. I have a container of salt and hand pick slugs right into it. Going out at night into your plants is a good way to find all sorts of leaf munchers

1st year zone 6b PA Planted out young in June and it's thriving and starting to spread already. We do have slugs here but luckily planted in one of my back gardens where they've never been an issue. Going to do several preparations you spoke of but we love oxymel's on salads, so going to make one, as my husband loves licorice, and you mentioned it's great on salad.

Did not have it last year but I am growing this now and it is huge and beautiful! Bees and hums both like it. I so love a bee's chorus. I love that it tastes like licorice and not anise if that makse sense. I do not like the flavor of anise or fennel but the hyssop is great. Still new to it so no info to share. I was just going to harvest a bunch sometime today.

Wisconsin, zone 5a, I had heard of a different video a couple years ago that if you plant it near grapes, it will help give a bigger yield. I found someone locally that was selling some at a plant sale, so I bought it. I haven't used it yet, even though I cut some this fall and dried it, it got lost in all my cut and dried greens 🙃😉 I'm sure it's in a green mix somewhere 🤦🏼‍♀️💡💜

We planted it in the spring from seed. I’m in zone 9. Because it mentioned in the Passover story and Jesus death, we figured there must be a benefit. I tried to make a tincture out of it but did it incorrectly and it molded lol I am excited to try again.

Anise hyssop, while related to the hyssop in the Bible, is not the same herb but the benefits are similar

I grew it in upstate NY and it did well but when I transferred it to our new home in west TN, oh man it thrives! It gets 3 stalks off each stem. So cool to grow. I use it as tea

Usually when a mint of any kind has three stalks on each stem, this means it was already cut at some point during the season. This then causes that stem grow three new stalks. All the mints I have do this.

I was looking for some thing to make a tea for calming; I have a Down syndrome daughter who is very agitated and hard to get to sleep at night; so will be trying this as a tea for her at night; I love things that are natural and I can grow myself; started these seeds last year with a lot of success, it came back this year; I live on Nova Scotia in zone 4; and it's doing very well in direct sunlight

I grew anise hyssop for the first time, this year - MN, zone 4b. I thought it was an annual and was going to pull it up when cleaning up the gardens, a month ago, but never got to it. I'm SO happy now that I didn't! Missed the lesson of the correct time to harvest and how to use it, so this video was very helpful for next year! 🌿 Thanks Heidi!!

While I appreciate this, I will stress this again as I have in many other videos and community posts. My time is precious and for me to take the time to write a book, I would have to give up other things that are important to me. Not only do I enjoy doing youtube, it is also my full time job. You get information for free while we get compensated for the many hours of work put into the channel via the ads. When I can spare some time between my studies on various topics, shooting and editing videos, watching the grandbaby three days a week, then just trying to keep up on my daily chores let alone my Etsy store (in which I have had to stop selling several products because I just do not have the time for them anymore like the skirts, aprons, soaps, and lip balms) then I do try find a few minutes to at least type up a recipe of some kind or a list of herbs and more to help with health conditions and post it to my Patreon account where ANY one can access the information for FREE. No donation necessary to see it. EDITED TO ADD: I also spend an hour or two a day just reading and responding to comments like these and to emails

I made my own journal on tips and recipes that I want to save. Watch the videos, then go back and take notes. I use a binder with 'chapter' tabs and a recipe page for each chapter. Saves a lot of time.

I've never used this herb , how exciting! Thank you ! Have you heard that star anise makes a great wrinkle cream? I guess it tightens the skin ..I've been wanting to try it but not sure how ..maybe you know ? Egg white tightens the facial skin too!

I just saw an older yt video on that. It used mostly cloves but star anise was in there too. She boiled it with water and reduced it and strained it off. What I found interesting was that she also used the leftover grounds to make a body scrub. 🙂

I do plan on growing it this year, I’ve had the seeds for a few years so hopefully they aren’t too old. I tried direct sowing a couple times and that didn’t work out.

Hi, I have five mature anise hyssop plants with a new one which grew from seed in the garden. I have not used the plants for teas or anything medicinal; the primary reason aside from their beauty is to benefit the bees, both honey and bumble bee varieties which are endangered at this time. The plants really are bee magnets and will attract them into early October in Northern Illinois. I have not started any from seed other than by accident but have divided them. I plan and doing some cuttings to see how it will work since the nursery is expensive. Thanks for your video.

Bee balm is another bee, hummingbird and butterfly magnet and grows easily from seeds. Get the seeds as oon as you can because the birds will compete for them 😉 hyssop and bee balm look great together too.

I guess we are in zone 3b? Ottawa area... anyways this grows super well here and reseeds itself easily in addition to establishing itself as a perennial. I use it in many things, including minced in hamburgers, and fresh in smoothies.

Heidi, do you by chance have an video for Anise Hyssop for when you are taking cuts from. I have seen and read other information regarding pruning or cutting on. That should not be done after midsummer. When I looked up when midsummer was it shows JUN 20th. I’m in zone 7 a-b in Oregon, Willamette Valley area. Would it be okay to trim taking and leaving the 6”s or so inches, to continue growing the rest of the season, in hopes to get a bit more?? This is on a new plant I potted from a start I bought this season. Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences 😃👍🏼

I’ve been growing this for the last couple of years. I live in Ohio in zone five and it says it should be OK here but I’ve never had it come back the following year 😢. It might be because I had it in pots and planted it in the ground in the fall and maybe it hadn’t had a chance to really establish. But this year I planted it early and I have a whole bunch of them and I’m really really hoping they come back! I originally wanted them for smudge sticks that I make but I also really like it for tea. Unfortunately I mixed a whole bunch of the leaves and flowers with some mountain mint And other herbs and made a really delicious tea, but then I found out that Mountain mint can be toxic :( So I don’t feel like anyone should use the tea now.

Great herb profile….planted it last year in Atlantic Canada…zone 5…it has done very well. I’m actually looking for ways to use it. Tea will be my first go to. But the remedy for poison ivy sounds very useful. I read that’s it’s deer and slug resistant on a different site. Obviously, not in all areas🤔

Once they get to a certain size, the slugs leave them alone, it is when the tender new growth first starts coming up that they devour it.

The herb Mullein is a good herb for soothing a soar throat and cough. Smoking it is like a vapor like form of cough syrup. They say using the flowers and buds is how to make the cough syrup from it.

Ulcers aren't caused by stress. It's actually a bad bacteria. The condition must be treated by antibiotics to heal the ulcer. Great video.

This may be true for some circumstances, but not all. Stress CAN cause ulcers and antibiotics are NOT needed for all these things and can often exacerbate such a problem, especially if you are talking about prescription antibiotics rather than herbal. Same applies to headaches, some are caused by stress, some are caused by diet, some are cause by pinched nerves, some are caused by lack of sleep, and the list goes on.

Should I dry the leaves and flowers or just one or the other? I’m new to this plant but have a lot. I have dehydrated the leaves so far. I have the flowers in a vase they are lovely.

You can do them together if you want. That is what I do if I am not allowing the flowers to go to seed
