I read this randomized controlled study "Effect of berberine administration on metabolic syndrome, insulin sensitivity, and insulin secretion" that showed that"Administration of berberine leads to remission of metabolic syndrome and decreases in waist circumference, SBP, triglycerides, and total insulin secretion, with an increase in insulin sensitivity". So, it appears that berberine doesn't increase insulin secretion. Another study showed that "Berberine induces GLP-1 secretion through activation of bitter taste receptor pathways".

This is a big surprise! Berberine occurs in Mahonia aquifolium, Oregon's state flower the Oregon grape. Native Americans used parts of the plant medicinally but those parts of the plants have been considered to be fairly toxic. The berries are edible but generally unpleasant. The roots bleed yellow when dug up. Roots, bark and berries can be used to make a variety of dyes ranging from yellow to purple.

The berberine effect that blocks the clearing of potassium, and as a result, calcium receptor channels opening up, does it mean you should avoid taking berberine if you are taking ACE inhibitors(ramipril) and calcium channel blockers like amlodipine? Or, does lowering the dose of ACE and/or CCB can work in tandem with BBRN? Thanks for your very detailed illustrations Dr.!

Earl gray tea has berberine and Stack makes a high berberine teabag. It is in a citrus fruit used in Italy and some think this might be part of the reason why the Mediterranean diet was thought to be so good, along with olive oil instead of canola oil. Without the berberine, the Mediterranean diet is very different.

I've been searching for natural compounds which can reduce glutamine. So far I've only found two, of which berberine is one. Cancer cells use glucose as fuel, so by a ketogenic diet you can minimize the glucose levels and this can be enough to kill some cancers. But if the cancer cells don't have access to glucose, they will use glutamine as fuel. There are some glutamine-blocking drugs, e.g. 6-diazo-5-oxo-norleucine (DON), but they are not available. They also have some bad side effects. Theanine is the other natural compund that can have a glutamine-reducing effect, as it inhibits the glutamine transporter. Can anyone suggest some other glutamine-inhibiting natural compounds?
