One of the more important but often overlooked modifications to any kayak would be adding something to protect the nose or bottom of the bow of your kayak. Although this area does seem to have a little more thickness, it will take an extra beating and I think it's worth adding a buffer so that your hull lasts longer.
I can't tell you how many videos I've seen on people trying to save money by making their own temporary or permanent solutions to this, but for $45 I think it's worth skipping the headache and just buying the berley pro bumper bro keel guard and epoxying it with weather-resistant 2-part epoxy. Here are the links for the items used:

Pop that bad boy in the oven or heat gun and form it to exact shape. I made a bunch of these for freshwater boats using PVC pipe cuttings this one looks like Kydex material. Definitely on my list of mods, thanks for sharing.

I think your absolutely right that it's Kydex and I should've put it in the oven to help it conform better, I got some sand particles in the gap already but live and learn I guess, thanks for the tip...so far its held up really well though despite it not being a perfect fit, def recommend doing this

@@PeterRanieriII Clear RTV won't bond to HDPE very well but it would definitely fill the void and keep sand out.

Hey Peter. Great videos! Thanks for posting these and helping the rest of us out. I am anxiously awaiting the delivery of the exact same kayak and your videos will be very helpful since I am looking to do similar mods. I am coming from a paddle yak and have always used it for freshwater. Plan on hitting the salt with my Compass!

Oh man, that is so exciting! The night before I went to pick mine up I could barely sleep, haha. You will be very happy with it I'm sure, upgrading to a pedal kayak from a paddle one is such a game-changer, and I'm glad my videos can help you with some ideas of what you may want (and not want) to do! This kayak has grown on me a lot, the more I fish on it the more comfortable I get and I think you'll find that to be true as well. I hope it arrives soon for you so you can get to use it in the saltwater this summer, it's super stable and you can catch all types of inshore species!

@@PeterRanieriII I hear you! I got lucky I was able to find one in stock at the end of last month and it is scheduled to be delivered on the 9th so the anticipation is killing me! lol Looking forward to some flounder fishing this summer. Now I need to buy new rod and reels. :)

@@yakanglernj8798 haha that’s very soon! Don’t be afraid to try your freshwater setups at first, the lighter the better! Small rods on the yak are so much easier to handle

Great stuff Peter I’ll be subbing to your channel. My compass is on deposit so you’re a few steps ahead of me and these videos are definitely beneficial.

Thanks! NICE! I bet you're excited, its actually a great kayak, I was a little critical at the beginning with some of the minor things but every time I go out on it I get a little better at getting used to it and finding ways to make it work better for my style of fishing. I'm sure you will find the same to be true. I have more videos coming related to the mods I've done including the rectangular hatch and other pvc/epoxy/wiring stuff. Hopefully, you can learn from them, and the mistakes I make 😉

@@PeterRanieriII definitely the only thing that bothers me is although I like the color I purchased personally it wasn't my first or second choice. I wanted green or orange for visibility but NE Dive was really cool and only shop that didn't want 50% down. I gave them $500 for a camo the other option was the blue or wait until sometime in July. For the extra $100 you pay for camouflage you get the turbo fin upgrade which alone is $215. I figured that visibility on camo wasn't any worse than the ugly blue so I went with that. I'll just put reflective tape and a flag on it.
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII 3 года назад
@@dngendron I think the camo isn’t a bad color, and to get turbo fins at a discount I think is worth it. I agree with the high vis, I wanted the green and got lucky to get it without waiting extra time but I would’ve gotten whatever I could get the fastest since the season is already here and you don’t want to wait until it’s half over to get it. When is your expected date of arrival? I hope your seat comes with the delivery

You said it! We’ll see how long it looks that way though...gotta try and keep her off the mussel beds. Thanks for watching Mr Green, almost time to get out there!

@@PeterRanieriII Guess striper haven't gotten to your area yet. I caught and took home 3 keepers already and released a few shorts. They're in the back, back Raritan Bay area for spawning, I might be able to catch 1-2 more keepers soon, when they comes out and slowly migrate North.

@@MrGreen-sw1ly oh wow! very nice 👍 yea that makes sense and they should be heading up towards my area very soon but haven’t caught any yet, I think theyr moving up north a little slower this year

Getting ready to put one on mine. Do you have an update? How long did it last? Thanks, great video.

Hey Adam, I sure do! check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jm_1Zf9nmeU.html Ok so in short, it did its job. But I think a lot of the protection area is wasted as the real place where it wore down was localized on the bottom point. I still recommend doing it but it doesn't have to be so big and I totally get why people heat custom pieces of kydex now, apparently kydex is stronger than this material as well

Good stuff! I’d be very interested in seeing a long term review of the berleypro keel guard. Not sure what type of material it is, but it looks heavy duty! Btw congrats! I can tell there’s a lot of contained excitement 😄

😂 yes there is quite a bit of excitement going on,! Good eye, lol. It was the first mod I did on the kayak and on camera too so I was like a chicken without his head, haha. Thanks for watching, I will def do a follow-up at the end of the season, so far it's holding up well...

Very poor fit like the one I just got for my Old Town Autopilot. For $62 ,going back,rubbish
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII Год назад
I agree! As someone mentioned in the comments, If you heat it up with either a heat gun or in the oven it will get softer and conform better...but seriously at this price we shouldn't need to do that!
