David, agree. It’s fair to say that Bowie was more of an international star, whereas, so were the Eagles, but not so much the individual members with the exception possibly of Henley. I live in Australia, everyone knows Bowie and also the Eagles, I noticed upon Glenn’s passing though, people here weren’t familiar with him.

This is not the only time I have ever seen a situation as this though. Kiss drummer Eric Carr who replaced Peter Criss which per Kiss fans standards was unthought of.He carried the torch very well and was a terrific drummer but a even better person. He died of Heart cancer (something I had never heard of)and I was sad that morning I heard he had passed. Freddie Mercury passed away the same day and I am a huge Queen fan but I felt for Eric and his fans and family because it was completely I guess you could say that left us on the same day as a true Icon in Freddie Mercury. Kinda different but the actress Farah Fawcett which she passed on the same day as Michael Jackson. None of us have the opportunity in most instances on when we leave this world but I will never say anything negative over anyone we lose on our journey of life. Just odd on how these coincidences have never seen light shown on them. RIP to all and they maybe gone but not ever forgotten. From Virginia in the U.S. to you mate in Australia. For those about to rock we salute you. Have a wonderful day sir!!!!

@@cadlac59 Hey Paul!!!wondering how you feel about the Eagles touring and playing the Hotel California album in its entirety?? I have seen them twice with the 1st being in 1995 though it was a postponement show from 1994 from the Hell Freezes Over tour.Glenn Frey had lost his voice so they postponed the Knoxville gig till the spring of 1995. I seen the Rolling Stones on the Voodoo Lounge tour and the Pink Floyd Division Bell tour in 1994 as well but they were Cavanan shows that they used to do here in the state's. A caravan show consists of taking 4 or 5 charter buses to a concert and you could take your refreshments (such as alcohol or whatever your preference was to have a good time)and not have to worry about your own transportation or being pulled over by the police as for drinking and driving. The last one I went on was in the year 2000 to see U2... $149.00 a ticket but you had piece of mind for them taking you their and back. The bus made 1 stop going in a town with a variety of restaurant's to choose from. How does it go in Australia?
@raultennis5904
@raultennis5904 4 года назад
I definitely much prefer the Eagles music over Bowie but as a personality, Frey did not connect with the masses nearly as much as Bowie. Part of it was Frey's somewhat distant greedy personality. Other part was that Bowie was an individual artist and also tended to pour more of his heart into the music. So it was really no great surprise that Bowie's death attracted far more attention. Bowie was just much more likeable. Frey came off somewhat of a businessman.

The Eagles will always be, for me, Henley, Frey, Leadon, Meisner and a bit of Felder. Those first three albums are absolute country-rock classics, the likes of which we have not heard to this day. That band that is currently touring (and charging thousands of dollars to see them) is not the Eagles. It only has one remaining original member, and is nothing but a nostalgia driven money machine. It’s truly pathetic.

I'm glad that Glenn was able to bury the Hackett with Bernie. But Ego's and Drugs where a big part in the break-up of the Eagles in the early 80's. I just don't understand why he and Don could never reconcile their differences. Ego's get in the way with a lot of relationships. Don's guitar work was critical on those mid 1970 albums.
@wserafin11
@wserafin11 3 года назад
I read two books about “Eagles” which is what they preferred to be called instead of “The Eagles” (weird!) and both books pointed out that the group was initially made up of four, later five, then four again owners of the band. What caused the rift between Don and Glenn was that the other Don (Henley) and Glenn were spending money profligately and a big part of their abuse of the band’s funds was money that belonged to Felder and Meisner. Meisner & Leadon also lost a ton of money (admittedly) by walking away and giving back each’s share of the band’s ownership. I think that (in the minds of) Frey and Henley, Meisner and Leadon set a precedent that convinced them that Don Felder was going to do the same. But, much to their surprise, he said “NO Way!” You want me out, then you have to buy my out because I am owed 1/20th, then 1/25th (after the departure of Meisner and Leadon) of the money the band has made (that I actively participated in making!). It took a long time to settle for a (reportedly) huge amount of money, before they were able to get things done. Joe Walsh, in the meantime was never offered a part of “Eagles” and (he freely admits) is actually an employee of Henley and Frey. And further, he’s got no complaint because he openly has said “I have my own band and frankly it’s not always that much fun running everything! With Eagles, all I have to do is be somewhere on time, rehearse, play and, put on a great show with the band!” Similarly, Stuart Smith replaced Felder’s guitar playing and Vince Gill has added his guitar and voice to the group as well. They are both highly payed employees too. Vince Gill has his own long list of songs that he’s written and won Grammies for and is married to the lovely Amy Grant who is also a very successful Singe/Songwriter of Christian music and they live a great life outside Vince’s “Eagles” side work.

This is a great bit! I go way back with the Eagles. In fact the only time I ever saw them was on their debut tour in 1972. I loved their perfect blend of rock and a touch of country/bluegrass and great harmonies. I didn't like the harder direction they took when Felder was brought in, and was especially distraught when Bernie left and Joe Walsh came in. ( Make no mistake - I LOVED Joe as a member of the James Gang and as a solo artist. I just didn't like him in the Eagles. He was already established as "Joe Walsh"; when he sang lead it sounded like a Joe Walsh song, not the Eagles. ) GREAT to see Bernie on the History tour; wish they'd given him another song or two to sing lead on ( lead-on, Leadon! Hey! ) And sorry Randy was too far gone to even sing one song with them one last time. Would have been awesome to see the original four Eagles together again. And Don Felder? Oh man I wish they'd let bygones be bygones and bring him back for one last tour - along with Bernie of course!

For reasons that I cannot wrap my head around is that the principal songwriters think that since their creative part of the process is the most important part of the process that everyone else should toe the line. Most bands need the raw material, basic melody and the words but usually the songs themselves are really the product of others helping to shape the songs. Why couldn't the bands be more like the Doors. All received equal credit for all the songs. Most bands are not very Democratic!
@richardjcranium

Most "bands" are really one or two people that handle the writing and are the focal points. Usually it's the feature people aka lead singer, lead guitar etc. Everyone else is just along for the ride or a hired hand. Eddie Van Halen always resented that Michael Anthony got the same cut on songwriting because they initially split the publishing 4 ways despise him not contributing (or being allowed to). Take it from a bass player who's had to deal with primadonna lead singers and lead guitar players for 35 years...

@@richardjcranium Sorry you have received abuse from other band members. Just like the Beatles I guess. Lennon-McCartney had a separate deal then Starr and Harrison. Each ones contribution was equally important. But I understand most groups are not going to be democratic. Just a nature of the beast!

The Eagles are generally a sell out cheesy band, writing half of those radio songs for money only. The timeline of Frey's acceptance of Bernie Leadon's apology doesn't make sense. In this interview it appeared that Leadon and Frey never had a conversation until just before the "History" documentary around 2013 and then tour. But the entire Eagles (old and new) line up were present at the Hall of Fame induction (Leadon called it being "indicted") in 1998. Didn't they talk then? Or Leadon had not offer his apology at that time? Just wondering, not trying to ruffle any feathers. Don't pour beer on my head. :)

Read Don Felder's book and watch the history of the Eagles documentary. But my take on it is that Glenn was very high strung and saw himself as the leader of the band and had a lot of strong opinions on what they should be doing. Bernie (and later Randy) disagreed and were annoyed with Glenn and eventually expressed it by leaving the band. When Bernie poured the beer over Glenn's head, Glenn didn't fight back because Bernie was in much better shape at the time and would have kicked Glenn's butt. The best thing that happened to Don and Glenn was Bernie and Randy leaving, because Joe Walsh and Timothy Schmidt were very talented hired guns who would never question anything "the Gods" said or did.

The toxicity within Eagles is well known. A shame as it is, I believe that it exists in a lot of huge bands to varying degrees, though some might prefer to keep things a little more underwraps, as it were. Nevertheless, it does get a bit tiresome when people continually use this plus ego and greed etc. as a bats to attack them with. I suspect a lot of jealousy is laced in those brickbats when initially young, good looking guys are successful making a ton of money. Us, as consumers, do not live with them and have only to appreciate the music, which was pretty damn good and the reason that they can still play to huge audiences to this day.

No. It was an equal partnership through the hiring of Felder. At that time, 1974, it was 5 equal members. When Leadon left, it was 4 equal members with Walsh as a hired gun. When Meisner left, it was owned by Henley, Frey, and Felder. That's why the Eagles were forced to settle the lawsuit filed. Y Felder, as he was legally a 1/3rd owner of Eagles, Ltd.

I love the music of the Eagles, but I absolutely hate the politics within the band. Glenn Frye was, and Don Henley is greedy. They have been taking the majority of the money from the music of the Eagles. Joe Walsh, Timothy B Schmidt, and Don Felder have been getting paid a salary. Don Felder wasn’t happy with his salary, and the Eagles fired him several years ago. Don Felder sued the Eagles and won several million dollars. I will keep the CD’s and cassettes that I have from the Eagles, but I will never buy anymore music from them, or pay money to go and see them in concert. The fact that Glenn Frye is gone doesn’t matter to me at all. He was a greedy SOB, and so is Don Henley. Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmidt are not part of the Eagles. They are hired hands and extras.

Well Henley, Frey, Leadon and Meisner had great voices, he didn't. Walsh didn't have a great voice, but he was a well known solo artist. He complained about not getting to sing and I think that bubbled up inside of him which led the Eagles to a breaking point. Now we have the reformation, Felder can make it about the money all he wants, but he signed the deal, I believe he stirred up trouble again.
