lp.constantcontactpages.com/s... Randy Meisner Talks About Joining The Eagles, The Fans & Poco - Our Lost Interview.
This classic Interview with Randy Meisner was done in Aug 2000. Randy did not give too many long interview but he spoke to John Beaudin for 90 minutes.
We asked Randy if he gets irked by autograph seekers?
Randy - No, it is like part of your gig. They are the fans and they are the ones that make you. When I was with the Eagles like in Japan I remember these people would come up and they would want autographs and so they would have an album sitting out. (Laughing) I would go to sign it and they would have about twelve of them layered so it looked like one. It was like ‘kachunk’ like a little shutter thing and could I sign this too. (Laughing) I would just stand there signing all night and I would sign every one of them. You know there were all these people who came and wanted my autograph and I really appreciated that because they are fans and that is what makes us!
John - Well, that is a good attitude but I have to say I only hear that half the time. What I hear a lot of is, “Why won’t these people leave me alone!” Some of the people I have talked to are almost bitter and angry at their own fame. When you and I were growing up, especially in the era we grew up in, we all wanted to be rock stars. Of course that came to fruition for you.
Randy - Yeah, it is like a dream. I can tell you this every week I get about two or three letters from young kids all over the U.S. and all they want is an autographed picture. It is amazing and I don’t know if their parents tell them to do it but The Eagles played so many gigs that we have seen kids fifteen and sixteen years old singing all the lyrics. It just really makes you feel good and that they are appreciating what I did and the work we do.
John Beaudin has been in major market radio (Edmonton, Vancouver & Calgary) for 33 years and a music journalist since 1989. He graduated from Broadcasting school as a news man so he would have the skills to write about the artists that inspired him since he bought his first album, “Madman Across The Water” by Elton John as a teen. In the 80's Beaudin was the host of the syndicated radio show “The Cross Canada Report” which had two version (Rock and A/C). Beaudin was also asked to be a judge at the Juno Awards (Canada's answer to the Grammys) Twice. He has anchored every position in radio including morning and afternoon drive and was a Program and Music Director for The Breeze and California 103 in Calgary. He currently hosts the popular Lovesongs at QM-FM in Vancouver and on iHeartRadio.

John Beaudin No, thank you, John, for taking the time and energy to transcribe and post this wonderful interview with one of the real unsung heroes in the Eagles' success story. I don't think Randy gets enough credit for being a founding member of one of the greatest bands in the history of rock 'n' roll.

Gilbert Yslas Those 2 were the best that took the Eagles to the super band status and blew the roof off. Then since they appreciated them so much, Glenn Frey and Don Henley fired them. Total narcissists! Too bad they were so insecure they felt the need to get rid of any "competition". When the original brought in RM and DF, AMAZING!! That's the Eagles I heard growing up and I love. Shame on Henley amd Frey!

K Farr Randy didn’t get fired. He quit!
@ingfig1
@ingfig1 2 года назад
@@kfarr3037 … neither Randy nor Don Felder got “fired” - they both quit! And let’s not forget about Bernie Leadon also, one of the four original co-founders of Eagles (together with Randy, Frey and Henley) - Bernie’s contribution to Eagles was huge with his excellent instrumentation and sweet harmonies with Randy that gave Eagles their characteristic sound. Bernie was expert on many stringed instruments (acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, mandolin) and styles of playing (rhythm, lead, blue-grass picking, etc). He also wrote the entire iconic music score for Witchy Woman, which was Eagles 3rd hit but their first hit written by an actual Eagle. Bernie saw Eagles becoming “the Glenn and Don H show” (aka the Egoes) and he left in 1975 after selflessly introducing his school friend Don Felder as a second lead guitarist. Bernie was an Eagle on their first FIVE albums- and not many new Eagles songs were released after the departure of Bernie and Randy, showing that Bernie and Randy were the heart and soul of Eagles. In fact, Eagles became a cover band doing re-runs of the hits from when Bernie and Randy had been in the band!
@ingfig1
@ingfig1 2 года назад
@@giselawmehler … yes, they both quit. So did Bernie Leadon also quit, in 1975, after introducing Don Felder to the band in 1974 and Felder then became the 5th member of Eagles altho not one of the four co-founders (who were Bernie, Randy, Frey and Henley). Please see my reply above - Bernie and Randy were the two strongest influences on the success of Eagles.

MY brother Danny was going to a coffee shop and Studio City every morning for coffee for months and months and months and having coffee with this guy who was really mellow and relaxed and yada yada yada... So after some time, because my other brother and myself were musicians, he just had to ask what he did? And he very humbly said oh, I was in this Band for a while...! So Danny said oh you're a musician then so are my brothers. What was the name of the band? And Randy hesitated and said the EAGLES...! OBVIOUSLY Danny FLIPPED! And they became pretty good friends and had coffee every morning until I went out to LA for a gig and of course that was the ONE day that Randy didn't show up for some odd reason! LOL! Just my luck because he's my FAVORITE EAGLE & the most humble cat in the world my brother Danny says! AND all you need to do is heer him talk and you totally understand that! And all I can say is I connect with TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT in a way that I can't even explain! And I'm so sorry for the troubles and sorrows this wonderful man has had! BE WELL RANDY all of your fans LOVE YOU SOOOOOOOOOO VERY MUCH... GET WELL AND BE WELL!!! AND THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY LIFE! 🙏🏻💖☮️🛐💯😘💋💋💋

Randy is,such an amaziing tallented musician. What,a,true kindred spirit and genuine nice guy. I love Randy and his,high vocal voice. The Eagles were,never the same for me after Randy left. Of course they broke up 2 1/2 years ,after Randy left in 77. When The Eagles Reunited in 94 they should have,asked him back. After all he was an origional founding member. That was just messed up!! 3 members had alterations with Glenn! What's that tell you? It wasn't them it was him. He was an ass! If you didn't comply with what Glenn and Don Henley wanted, you were either made,miserable so you eoukd quit or fired like they did to 'Don Feldner in 2001.

@@jenellcecil3672 ... 3 founding members of the Eagles left because of Glenn Frey’s bullying.. I wouldn’t say that they left “by their own choice”. Check out this clip .. just after the 3 minute mark Glenn is throwing one of his legendary tantrums and he double punches the air right near Randy’s head .. while Randy is performing. Randy eventually popped and hit back .. but by all accounts Randy was the sweetest, most humble guy in show business, so imagine what provocation it took before he popped .. please watch the video to the end, it shows an interview where Randy speaks openly ... ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qFwnVj-ZQWk.html

John...thank you for interview...I've always believed that the Henley/Frey ego machine took Randy for granted...in fact they treated Leadon and Felder with disdain and disrespect. I'll get hate for this but I thought Joe Walsh was totally wrong in the band. On his own...the James Gang...loved his stuff just hated him as an Eagle...same with Schmidt...the dude could not come close to Meisner's voice. A band I dearly loved as a girl broke my heart when Henley and Frey broke the Eagles. I stopped listening...if I listen at all anymore it's the early stuff I play. Thanks for giving me a place to rant...keep up the good reporting! Cheers

These days i only listen to 1976-1977 era live recordings. Meisner and Walsh sharing the stage was amazing. I feel like Walsh' role makes much more sense when listening to them live around that time. He could play the 12 string and harmonize with Mesiner on Take It To The Limit in pure perfection.

@@grafvonwalbeck8261 I have to give this one to you...Walsh and Meisner seemed to enjoy playing together...I just don't care for Joe's vocal styling...Schmidt sounds thin and "reedy" compared to Randy's high lyric tenor...and those God Almighty high notes...when I saw him live...before Walsh...it was breath-taking. Rocked my 16 year old soul to it's foundation! Between songs...Henley and Frey were picking out girls for the "Third Encore" so called. I'll never forget that either...I was sooo disappointed. Keep up the great posts...Cheers!

I agree with you about Randy. They were jealous of his voice. One of my favotites outside of the Eagles...but I disagree with the comment about Schmidt. He has a much better voice than Frey or Henley. His voice on Pocos Rose of Cimarron is beyond amazing. He is likewise a great vocalist.

My basic sense is, never trust anyone who is 100 percent lacking in sense of humor, i.e., Frey and Henley.

I totally agree with you Lisa, Joe Walsh was great as a solo artist but for me he was never really a fit for the Eagles. They should have stuck with Randy but I guess Glen Frey and Don Henley had other ideas.

Meisner and Walsh sharing the stage was the best thing happening to The Eagles. Go check the 'Live at the Capital Center' recordings and listen how they harmonize on Take It To The Limit. Probably one of the best live recordings ever.

@@starlabratcherflannigan1798 I tried to find it. You go to their "official" channel, and it's this soulless thing that doesn't have the videos listed when you go under the Videos tab. They have a few on the playlists, but about half are not there, and I don't even think the studio version of "Take It to the Limit" is there, and only one live one from The Forum is found. That's OK. I like the unplugged version he did on the 1978 solo album. The Forum performance is wonderful, but stripped down I can hear that beautiful voice much better!

2:01: It's not necessarily bitterness, at least not toward fans. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scammers that sell autographs. They've spoiled it for the rest of us.

I came upon this topic on another RU-vid channel, then I found the comments were turned off! I'm going to be all over the place here, and I'm posting this comment so I can get some feedback from whoever, even though this content is about 4 years old! Here goes! When people talk about any topic, there are always numerous points of view, and even one individual can change their opinion at any moment, so what is the actual reality and truth about anything or anyone! I guess it's all relative, but who really knows! All the talk about the breakup of The Eagles and the different reasons and circumstances for it happening are varied and contradictory! It reminds me of the recent attention that was paid to The Beatles and how and why they broke up, after that multi hour documentary was aired on The Disney Channel recently! The opinions are all over the place, like my comments here! On another topic that I really feel strongly about! Why were some artists like Irene Cara, Billy Joel, among others, victimized by their managers, accountants, legal council, etc...? How did all that happen and why were other artists able to be victimless and successful in their business endeavors? I feel especially bad for Irene Cara and what she had to go through! If anyone has an explanation, please share! In closing, I'd like to state that Hotel California is the greatest song of all time, because we all reside there! "You Can Check Out Anytime You Like, But You Can Never Leave!" Goodbye!

Year 2022,Randy has been in seclusion for over 2 years. Assumed he has dementia. Sure would like to know if it's been booze or pills that's led to his decline.

From what I read, both. I never met the man, but it seems that he might have used booze to cope with his shyness and stage fright in the beginning. The Eagles have been very honest about the fact that they did alot of drugs, so it wasn't just Randy. I've read several different stories about his problems. He had 2 heart attacks in 2004 or thereabout. Then he got food caught in his throat some years later and ended up in a coma but recovered. As time went on he was finally diagnosed as biopolar. I read he was in and out of rehab and that when he came home his wife would enable his addiction because it was easier for him. Maybe if he had a different person in his life he would have had a better outcome. I also read that he had started suffering from alcohol induced dementia so who knows what is going on now. Someone with knowledge said they sent him birthday cards in the last couple of years but don't know if he ever saw them as there is no response from the conservators. They said when his wife was alive she used to send thank you cards to people who sent him birthday cards and messages. He just turned 77 in March. I hope he is being taken care of well. His ex wife is on FB but as I respect their privacy I would not get in touch with her.
