This technical video covers the final five needle timing and position adjustments for the Bernina 730, 830 and 930. The first five were covered in Part I; Part II completes the sequence of 10 adjustments. Hosted by Bernina expert, Neal Iund. Neal was trained at the Bernina factory in Switzerland and was formerly Chief Mechanic and Master Technician for the Bernina Sewing Machine Co., Western Bernina Importer USA.
The video is designed for experienced sewing machine mechanics and usually requires a set of specialized tools without which the precise adjustments are difficult to achieve. Neal is available for consultation or for questions about tools.

Thank you for all the detail info! I had a problem with loops on the underside of material when stitching! I then Disassembled the top tension unit and found a HUGE dustbunny between the plates! This can ONLY be cleaned by disassembly! No more loops!!! Respect for your channel!

Dear Mr Lund, the issue about the automatic buttonhole device on my Bernina 730 record was happily solved. Some part around the buttonhole mechanism was probably frozen : actually I put some oil all around the inner mechanism of the buttonhole lever, by opening the belt cover plate. Happy end, the buttonhole process would start working properly again. Thank you very much for your assistance and your great technical lessons.

My respects, Mr Lund! As a total amateur I have succeeded in setting my 2 Bernina 730 Records from the early 1960ies and also to repair the bigger plastic camstack gear on one of them and to change the vertical axle on the same machine, and the set both machines from the beginning of the procedure, following the technician level shop manual "The setting of the Bernina sewing machines models 730, 731, 732". My both machines are of the type 730 Record with 20 ornamental pattern cams, the older one with the disc type thread pre.tension system, the slightly younger one with the hook variant. For now I'm re-setting the older variant of machine after finding that I had some settings basically wrong, which has not hindered this machine to perform quite well for years. Now, looking for perfect needle placement, I think I have detected a problem with the longitudinal needle position (in direction of the fabric advance). The correction need is very small. On page 21 in the manual, part 22, "Centering of needle movement", the text says: "If a longitudinal correction must be made (in direction of the fabric advance), unscrew the bakelite handwheel - - - unscrew the four four frame screws (accessible by means of a long screw driver from the frame cover side by means of a long screw driver from the frame cover side) and press frame into correct position." Could you please help me identify all theese 4 (four) "frame screws". Do all four look the same? What is meant with "press the frame in correct position" (in relation to what?). What is meant with that all 4 screws are accessible with a long screw driver through the "frame cover side"? Is this through the plate under the handwheel, covering the pulleys and drive belts? If not, then through what, as i takes a long screw driver? This is an information I can't find anywhere. Gunnar Pettersson, Finland

My 60$ secondhand Bernina 801 Sport stitches flawlessly now :). Thank you so much A note, though: at least on mine, the part you bend is *not* hard material, it's aluminum. Maybe hard aluminum, but still aluminum. I bent it by twisting a screwdriver padded with masking tape.

The older 807 used a steel driver but all newer machines were a special aluminum. Much less force is applied to the driver and only the point of the driver can be adjusted.

Hi Neal, thanks again for answering my previous question. I wish I lived in your country alas I don't. Could you please tell me my reverse is not working on my bernina 730,I feel it is as the other issues with this machine that were all to do with inactivity ,I don't know where to look or clean for this particular problem. I am so in awe of your skills thank you so much for sharing.

Make sure that the buttonhole lever and the satin-stitch lever at the right hand mid corner of the machine is disengaged. The stitch length lever can then be lifted up past zero for back stitching.

@@nealiund7284 managed to find both, in theory only, after I downloaded the repair manual and found the specs. Then measured the ones I got. Not the quality of the originals for sure but the size looks close on paper. Tooth count who would ever know????? LOL! Still interested in a sure fit set before attempting to do this. May even take it to someone that is a true expert. The old belts look perfect on the back side just a little worn on the inside. Any harm on waiting until they start slipping? Should I put a red line across the pullies and across the old belts? Worried that the replacements belts might not be a quality R&R after removing the originals. Hate to take down a machine that's working like a clock. Earled (LOL) and greased it after a light cleaning. Looks clean inside. As a mechanic, back during the civil war, every old car that never had a transmission fluid change (100K), failed after we changed the fluid. Maybe sometimes let a sleeping lion alone.

Hi Neil, I'm loving your videos. I'm finding a dearth of technicians who can fix my 1130. Now I have a whole stable of venerable Berninas, 117, 530, 540, 730, 1130, and now a 217. I just wish I had heard you properly about oils and greases that you used. Please can you let us know what they are? The old girls need a bit of lube after sitting around for many years! Hello mr Lund, I am trying to fix my mum’s 60y old Bernina 740 favorit. I think I have the needle timing correct ( thank you for the video :-)), but after 4 or y5 tuns on the wheel, the upper thread gets stuck somewhere in the bobbin case, and breaks. I’ve managed to pick up the bobbin thread a few times, but no stitches were made. Because of the age of the machine, I don’t find a lot of information on the net. Can you help me? Thanks, Gunther

I have a Bernina 707 and it looks different from the inside.. I do not understand how I can change the timing..
@nealiund7284
@nealiund7284 3 года назад
The adjustment logic is the same. Return motion is typically fixed from the factory on the 700 series machines. If someone changed the vertical gear, the issue would be loop lift timing that is off. Also, some people think that all they have to do is change the height of the needle. If this has been done at some point, I would check needle height on this machine and reset the needle height. This is always the last thing to do but it may solve your problem.

MM 0 seconds ago Hello. Question: I have a Bernina 830 but it is not that model, it is newer, electronic, with a screen. It has been difficult for me to obtain information about my model to be able to sew. They gave me a used one but I can't find much on RU-vid. The manual I found is not very explanatory. I don't know how to update it or buy the software since I'm not sure about the 830 series. I've seen many videos of similar machines but very few of mine. I'd appreciate your help. I’m in Utah. Cedar Hills.

Hi Neal, please I would love to know how to properly clean my bernina 730 record, I recently was given this machine and am aware it was sitting unused for many years, it's in great condition except the knob to switch that raises or lowers the feed dogs is locked up, and although it straight stitches beautifully it dosent want to reverse stitch,my thought is this could this all be caused by inactivity and dry oil? I have cleaned and oiled according to standard owners manual.
@nealiund7284
@nealiund7284 4 года назад
Oil varnish is where oil simply oxidizes; an example being vegetable oils that immediately forms a scum on the exterior of their containers. A good reason not to use organic oils and oils like bicycle chain lubricants, WD-40 etc, that are designed to coagulate. .... Over a long period of time (15 to 30 years), class 22, 32, 68 and similar machines oils with varnish. Bernina 730 models especially used a white (clear) mineral oil like an ISO 32. It's lifespan was already spending out in a few years. This is the reason that Bernina switched to using a class 68 machines oil with oxidation inhibitors for long term lubrication in the 830 series beginning in 1971. For cleaning, I would use Home Depot's kerosene which is nearly the same product as what they sold as mineral spirits. I don't like their new mineral spirits as it has a longer evaporation rate than water. Gotta be a a green thing, I dunno....

I love your site! I have a 930 Record I purchased in 1981, I used it extensively for about 10 years, periodically since that time. Several years ago I thought it was losing power...start fast, then slow down, not sewing as fast as I thought it should, etc. That problem, along with stitch length issue, led me to two different repairmen, neither of whom solved the problems. It still sews but it's just "not right". I have regularly cleaned and oiled machine. Is there a way to know if I'm actually having power loss or if something else is causing the problem? Could it be needle timing? I'm going through your steps to see if it helps but any advice would be appreciated.

Hello, I recently purchased a vintage Bernina 530 -2 record. It does not have the knee lever so I'm unable to get it to work. I'd like to find out if there are other levers that can power it, if you own one I can purchase, or if you are able to make one for me since you create tools. I would be very grateful for some help with this. I am dying to try out this machine. Thank you for your response. How do I reach you outside of RU-vid?
@nealiund7284
@nealiund7284 4 года назад
The latter 530-2 models could be purchased with a knee lever control but the most popular choice was a foot control. Please send a photo of the machine with the knee lever shaft and motor. I can tell you more what you have and what can be done here. Foot control models had a plugged up hole where the knee lever shaft could be fitted to the base plate. naiund1@gmail.com
