Join Michelle as she guides you through 5 exercises you can do with your mallet finger splint on. Typically you have to wear a mallet finger splint for 6-8 weeks, or longer. This not only makes your injured mallet finger very stiff but also your WHOLE hand.
Since a mallet splint can prevent you from using your hand normally, it is important to keep the range of motion of all your uninjured finger joints. Proper healing of your mallet finger is top priority. So it is important to perform these exercises with your splint ON if your mallet finger is still healing.
Always consult with a doctor or your hand therapist to make sure you are doing these exercises correctly. See disclaimer below.

Don't let ALL your fingers get stiff! Did you know as your mallet finger is healing, which can take a LONG time, there are exercises you can do with a mallet finger splint on. 👍These exercises are NOT for your mallet finger but your uninjured fingers and your finger joints not in a splint. Let me know in the comments if these helped prevent fingers stiffness while healing from a mallet finger. Not medical advice.❌ LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to show your support. 🙏

Uh just wondering if a dislocation (DIP Joint) is solved by wearing a splint for up to 6 weeks? I thought they were used to heal heal the tendon and avoid dislocation again but popping it back in place is done first?

I was confirmed by my doctor that i have mallet finger, no bone damage accrding to the x-ray. I'll be getting splint put on my pinkie finger (right hand) any day. I was wondering if I could engage in racket sports ie pickleball while my pinkie is in a splint ? Im sure i can get by playing without the use of my pinkie. I would make sure the splint us on well. Or should i avoid vibration from the racket ?

This comment is 6 months old so I’m curious what you did! I took a week off sports after the injury but then resumed playing ball hockey, baseball, and… indoor rock climbing 😳 while wearing the splint. The doctor & therapist weren’t thrilled about the climbing, but I was able to make it work!

I started playing pickleball after two weeks with the splint on. I was being careful but it did interfere a little with my game. I wasn't able to get a full grip. After 6 weeks when the splint was taken off I incresed the frequency of playing. It wasn't fully healed after 6 weeks but after 6 months it got even better but still not 100% . Best be carefull with the sport you choose, one good knock from a hockey stick could set you back again.@@misterrainer

@@realzionit’s been a challenge but I’ve been able to work through it. Still not fully recovered but making progress. Make sure you let it heal (mine took 8 weeks) and then do your hand therapy exercises.

I had a tendonous mallet injury on my little finger about 16 days ago. A hand therapist put a cast on it within a couple of hours. At first, when I bent the middle joint during exercises I felt nothing on the fingertip or nail -- it was completely immobile at the end of the finger inside the cast. Now when I bend the middle joint I can feel that the last knuckle is also bending and I can fell pressure on both the fingertip and nail from the cast when I bend the finger back and forth. This seems to indicate that the tendon has healed somewhat since I'm getting motion at the fingertip. My question: is this bad? Should I avoid bending that finger so I don't flex the extensor tendon before it's completely healed? Or could this mean that the tendon was just stretched and is recovering quickly? I plan to keep the cast on for the full eight weeks in any case.
@VirtualHandCare
@VirtualHandCare Год назад
It could be that your finger swelling has gone down and your splint/cast has become loose. I would contact your therapist, they may want to make one more secure. You do not want to be bending at the tip. You likely feel the finger flexor bending which pulls again the healing of the extensor. This could cause your finger to not heal straight especially with a tendinous mallet.

I have a tendinous mallet on my middle finger on the right hand. I had it in a splint 5 days later. Before that I had it in a splint intermittently only. I wasn’t able to get in to the hand specialist until 5 days later and didn’t go to urgent care. The Dr. told me they recommend removing the splint once in a while to air it out, but not to bend the end joint. The first week I had a hard time doing it by myself and have tried many types of splints! I’m better at it now and started counting my 8 weeks over to be sure! While in a splint, can I still use that hand for light duties, or should I avoid picking up anything other than a fork to eat! Just curious if I am over-doing it. I watch my niece’s 19 month old son and occasionally wants to be picked up after a fall. I try to just use the free fingers but I assume I am putting more pressure on the muscles in my entire hand.
@BruceKvam
@BruceKvam 3 месяца назад
@@laurav2735 It turns out I screwed that finger up and it never healed. I would recommend not using your hand at all, and never bend the injured finger. I was in a splint for four months and the stretched tendon never healed, because I used the finger early on.

@@VirtualHandCare thank you very much for the answer! I will try to find the right hand specialist because i went to the doctor and he found out that I have got a trigger finger . Then I visited another doctor and told me that i have tendonitis with a trigger finger and i asked him about the top of my finger which is bend and he told me that it is arthritis or i should have an x-ray. 😁 I don't know why the same finger is bent... I think it will be like this forever🥴 Thank you so much for your answer!! Wish you the best and we love your videos!!! Have a nice day 😊😊😊😊

Hi guys, can I swim with my bony mallet splint on, with a glove over the splint to keep it dry? I'm going to miss swimming for 8 weeks otherwise 😢
@misterrainer
@misterrainer 10 месяцев назад
You can definitely get it wet but need to ensure the splint stays secure and doesn’t slip off. I’m through 8 weeks in a splint and now 2 weeks of therapy where I remove the splint and do exercises. Just make sure you can dry the skin thoroughly after you’re done swimming.
