Watching everyone be shocked by the mild knotting in Bride has been hilarious.

I was less shocked and more confused, like obviously I was suppose to be reacting to something that I had ZERO context for, and so began my very careful googling to figure it out 🤣

That's a solid list! Agree with pretty much everything apart from Rose/House. For some reason, it really worked for me and I had an awesome time with it! Reminded me a lot of the video game Control (one of my faves), so that was likely a major factor.

Glad you had a relatively okay reading quarter, hope it only goes up from here! Start of January truly feels like ages ago, lol. I really need to read that Kingfisher collection and the Malka Older novellas!! Happy reading 🤩

I love how the auto-captions said you had more misses than hits in scientology. xD Rose/House was such a disappointment. :( I was really hyped to read Too Like the Lighting a few years ago, just before the last book was supposed to come out, but it got postponed (again) and I haven't been able to get into the mood for it again since. :/ Thanks, brain.

🌩 I had A BLAST this quarter. Haven't read a ton of stuff, since I'm mostly reading Malazan and my speed is not great with it, but I don't mind it. If I had to tier rank my readings, I'd have: NEW FAVOURITE Babel (R.F. Kuang), Toll the Hounds (Steven Erikson) GREAT Starless Sea (Erin Morgenstern), Dust of Dreams (Steven Erikson) GOOD Mariposa Vermelha (Fernanda Castro) - not sure if it was ever released outside of Brazil, Return of the Crimson Guard (Ian C. Esslemont), Ânima - Uma Ameaça Virtual (Carol Vidal) - also don't know if released outside Brazil And currently I'm reading The Crippled God, I'm at 66% of it, and it's on its way to being the best book of the year for me, so far. So yeah, GREAT quarter

Jackalope Wives is great, that is one of my favourite reads of the year so far too.

When I think back on the T Kingfisher books I have read, Jackalope Wives has definitely moved up to one of my favorites. I also love the Clocktaur War duology.

I'm with you right now on just trying to figure out what my brain is willing to read. I quite want to read, but I'm too exhausted by life to have much energy to put into reading, so I need what I read to really grip me. So far, it's been cozy SFF and romance, but I think I'm starting to have some interest in other things. I'm reading The Warm Hands of Ghosts right now and really enjoying it despite it being a bit creepy and gruesome.

Yea if its not serving the momentum it has to be paused, which also comes with its own anxieties for me (not as good at it as you) but learning to try and be comfortable in the discomfort

I expected to like Too Like the Lightning, but the obsessive nature it fuels was not expected. I am enjoying Seven Surrenders. It is more full of action and seems like almost a breezier read than the first book and I still have no idea what the end game is. I have had a lot of series wins this quarter - Wall of Storms, Night Watch, everything Bujold, and 50% of Seven Surrenders. Hopefully it drives me to wrap the series I only have 1 book remaining to finish.

I am 100% with you on wanting to read books that make me want to read. While my reading year has been aggressively meh so far, I do have 2 standouts - The Chosen and the Beautiful, which was super atmospheric and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes which I am absolutely loving (I have about 150ish pages left)

I think because I had Wonder Engine ready to go as soon as I finished Clockwork Boys (at the tail of 2023), my reading experience did feel like one whole book and I was really satisfied. But even in that respect, it did feel like the second half was longer than it needed to be.

I’m having a very similar experience with Wonder Engine. I loved Clockwork Boys. I’m about 25% into Wonder Engine and I keep picking up and finishing new books instead of finishing it because it just isn’t holding my interest. It isn’t bad, I just am not motivated to find out how it all ends. It’s a bummer.

between your disappointment of into the riverlands and your feelings about the water outlaws i'm thinking perhaps wuxia is not for you? that being said i do agree that into the riverlands is probably my least favourite of the series

Very good chance, although I guess they both felt overly familiar to me. I think its more that high action sub genres are very difficult for me to read for some reason. Although Water Outlaws was more ambivalence, I actually didn't mind the fighting scenes there but I don't think I was in it for another revolution story.
