I don't think the opening is saying history has lead to this pinnacle anime but just like the rest of the themes in mob we are not alone it took many different people and many different paths to make this anime happen and we could not have done it without those many different peoples help and skill.

Also it's very nice that the scene where the layers that make up mob literally are pulled back, simbolising his humility, is followed by the scars spinning with their boss in the middle. His selfish, self glorifying nature, almost making it seem like all this build up was made for him. In fact it's him that stops this appreciation of people's work in the first place, while mob was fine being part of it in a sense

I just realished. Mob being given those broccoli seeds were probably what saved his life. All of the energy that he was absorbing and wasn't able to control went to the broccoli seeds rather than into him. If he hadn't had the seeds on him the energy would have most likely just suddenly bursted out and he would have exploded just like whatshisface was about to. Him being gifted seeds in payment most likely saved his and whatshisface's life..

Nah, Actually it's what Bone likes doing as a studio. Noragami Aragoto's opening has same kind of battle sequence with same exact color pallet and i am sure there are few other bone animes with same thing. Not saying that Mob copied Noragami, jus that Bones like doing this kind of stuff.

MOB CHOIR is a weird unit. 99 and 99.9 have the same vocalist and chorus members but different composers. I can’t remember who composed 99, but 99.9 was done by Kitani from sajou no hana. The vocalist Sana sang for 99 when she was still in high school, and later on joined sajou no hana (and sang for 99.9 ofc). Hence the feat. sajou no hana. Technically 99.9 is a sajou no hana song, which with the ED songs makes it…5 songs sajou no hana composed for a single 13-episode season of anime. As for the chorus members it’s literally the main anime staff and producers. It’s meta as hell, imagine directly hearing the director sing in the OP of his own show. It’s literally hearing the artists’ voices in their work.

Mob psycho is the only anime that has made me cry. Not even from any sort of sadness, but from the way it works in unison with the animation and the soundtrack to tug at your tear ducts. When mob uses his powers to pull back together Emi's novel draft, that gets you to realize that he's no longer shunning his powers, but he's making more and more room for his power's to be used in a positive light, while also still putting in an effort to not rely on them, based on how he tried to pick up the pieces of the draft with his hands at first. Just watching this video and hearing all this praise for the show that I love is making me tear up, like watching your child at a graduation ceremony of some kind.

I feel ya. Mob Psycho makes you cry not with cheap tactics like dramatic deaths and cheesy confessions, but incredibly realistic depictions of being human. When Mob, after sparing that family of spirits from the burnt-down house in the woods, spending the whole evening thinking about justice and who could punish the all-powerful HIMSELF if he ever were to turn bad, I felt that. Not because we viewers have superpowers, but we can feel the weight on the shoulders of this teenage boy just trying to be good, to not lose anything/anyone. We can relate to the humanity inside Mob. The visual tricks and subtle but great score underline those themes perfectly

@@wilddogspamMob Psycho parodies that sort of cynicism though. That was one of the major points Mogami arc to me. The world often isn't as uncaring or unjust as you think it is, and if it is,you can try to change it. I'm not saying you should act like everything is perfect, but I've seen people give up on life pretty much simply because they refuse to believe anyone could ever love them before they've even started to try. I agree we should address the issues of the world, but I suppose what I'm trying to say is that being cynical, jaded and depressed are being portrayed as trendy nowadays which is absolutely awful. The Mogami arc shows how this is a toxic attitude that can destroy the people around you. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say here, because I'm not always the best at wording my thoughts.

05:10 Another thing i find neat here is how Mob contrasts with his friends. While everyone is full of energy he just lightly bobs up and down,However he does that instead of staying still. Signifying that even though he is different and still not 100% like his friends,He is doing his best to fit in,Showing how much he changed from his more lonely idea from earlier in the series.

Something that I just noticed after re-watching this video several months later. The transparent cube mentioned at 16:08 is actually yet another homage to animation and video. Gauging by the slight color tint of each face of the cube, it is actually a Dichroic Prism Cube, a specific application of a prism that separates white light into its Red, Blue, and Green counterparts. It is used extensively in camcorders and digital cameras. The fact that it surrounds Mob I take to mean to encapsulate the intention of the entire series. It takes Mob, puts him through a medium that we can see, and uses that medium to bring us the show and the not-so-hidden lessons it provides.

at 7:50 it's actually a reference to an omake in the manga where Reigen tries to exorcize a face that comes out of the wall, and this face later appears in other omake's, you can also see it in the season 1 opening on the side of salt middle school.

I'll let you guys in on a trivia: Not sure if this is still true in 99.9, but most of the members of Mob Choir in 99 besides Sana (the main vocalist) are literally members of the show's production staff. There's a list in VGMDB, but a few of them are the show's director, series composer, character designer, a couple producers, and literally Studio Bones' president. I know in an interview a producer talked about assembling the MOB CHOIR unit again for 99.9, so it’s most likely the same. Though it is quite hard to confirm, cause 99.9 is basically a sajou no hana song and is credited as such.

That is precisely why I love these series of "What's in an OP?". Learning about things like the zoetrope and barrier-grid animation turns an already great opening into a delightful experience. Before this video, I enjoyed the beautiful animation and editing of that op, but now I admire this masterpiece with renewed respect. Thank you, Geoff, for your work.

yeah its good and its the message of the show but sometimes lil things matter a lot to me. also its not only him saying it but the whole senario and structure of the moment he "fought" just by standing up remembering to keep pushing. because even if his friends wouldnt be able to defeat someone they would try and "fight on" stand in de way etc. its all about trying even if you cant. and i also think it was mob just trying to calm him self down to stay his ground by saying something he always says when he is having a hard time "fight on" when running you know.

I like both for different reasons, and OPM s1 was gold. However, seeing how s2 was made, makes me quite disappointed of opm where Mob s2 stayed consistent with the first season...

Yeah, MP100 has a clearly laid out plot with a beginning, middle, and end. The journey Mob goes through is one worth telling. I love OPM, but the whole thing is a gag. How long can we tell an interesting story based around a guy who can beat anything with one punch? MP100's manga never loses it's focus, while OPM's starts to meander and focus on side characters. So basically, as a manga reader, I'm saying I agree with you.

4:40 actually that flower (BIG SPOILERS HERE) Is from the bouquet mob has on the last few chapters of the manga to give to Tsubomi. And stuff happens in the chapters making that the only flower left on Mob’s hand (if you don’t have time to read the manga, then watch the ed, the last few seconds is mob with that flower)

You missed the card symbols in the back during the wave. There's the 4 suits behind the telepathy club, who spend all their time playing card games and such, and then zener symbols behind the rookie psychics, who used those cards to demonstrate their abilities when Ritsu first met them.

I believe 10:39 was as simple and badass as mob succumbing to his own rage when he sees the corpses of his family. The black and white is very reminiscent of that scene, and just as that moment is a turning point in the show, it is a turning point in the OP as well, so it would make more sense than being related to mogami

The city battle scene is my absolute favorite of the entire opening. But after watching this and hearing your explanation about this opening being a representation of the animation history I appreciate it more than before. Mob psycho 100 is indeed the most creative opening I have ever seen.
